Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My cat ate a sewing needle and had to have surgery on her intestines to remove the needle. I submitted my claims to healthy paws, which was reviewed within a couple days and I recieved the money in my bank account about a week later via direct deposit. The healthy paws customer service people even was able to request my vet records from my vet directly. I interacted with the customer service team at Healthy Paws twice during this expierence and was very pleased with how everyone was so helpful and thoughtful during this scary time. As an Iraqi vet my cat O'Reilly is my battle buddy in transitioning to civilian life. He has saved me and Healthy Paws allowed me to save him. After conducting research into pet insurance carriers I found Healthy Paws to be superlative. They have certainly demonstrated to be. Claims were filed over the phone app and were approved within 2 days of submission. Healthy Paws has delivered time in and time again not only through O'Reilly's urinary issues but when I became concerned he may have ingested a foreign body. My Bandit had to have TPLO knee surgery. It was a “routine” surgery however very costly! It was so comforting to have peace of mind knowing that the surgery was covered and my portion would be affordable. The claims process was quick. I received reimbursement for the preliminary expenses (diagnosis and initial visit with the surgeon) before he even had surgery. They even approved to pay the specialist directly so I didn’t have to worry about coming up with the money and being reimbursed. I’m so thankful for their team. I wish my health insurance were as good as my cats' insurance. When my cat got cancer, they were compassionate and comforting, processed my claims and reimbursement super-fast, and basically took away all the financial stress of dealing with a family member with a potentially terminal illness. Every time I've interacted with them, they've been professional and deeply kind, and really seemed to be rooting for my kitty. Plus, now they will actually do direct pay to the vet rather than having you submit claims and get reimbursed, so if money is tight, you have an option that doesn't require you to come up with thousands of dollars for surgery. We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for our dog, Ella, a German Shepherd, for almost 4 years and could not be happier. We did a lot of research when we first looked into pet insurance. There are so many companies out there to choose from. It can be a daunting and confusing process. However, we came to the conclusion that Healthy Paws was our best bet. No doubt we made the right decision. Ella just went through major surgery, a total hip replacement, which is a huge expense. Our Healthy Paws Pet insurance covered 90% of that cost. Healthy Paws has been of great benefit to us and our pup, a now 9 year-old Chocolate Lab Mix. In the past 14 months, our dog has had to undergo TPLO surgeries to deal with ligament tears in both of her back legs, and Healthy Paws helpfully covered 80% of the cost of both the surgeries. They have always been helpful and responsive in covering any unexpected health issue that has arisen with our dog. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

My Abby just underwent TECABO surgery, a major surgery that involves removing the ear canal. Not only did Healthy Paws arrange a direct-pay arrangement so that I didn’t have to pay the entire bill and then wait for reimbursement, but they followed up after her surgery to see how she was doing. I was dreading making the call to them to see how they could help but they were amazing; compassionate and willing to do whatever they could to take the stress of the payment process from me. If you’re considering pet insurance and you’re reading this, you don’t need to continue looking. They’re the best.

Our dog, Jagger, was suddenly paralyzed in both rear legs just three weeks ago and had to have emergency surgery. We were shocked and devastated! The surgery cost just under $6,000 and ongoing physical therapy is likely to cost $2,000 or more. We just got word that Healthy Paws will reimburse us for the great majority of all of this expense! Fortunately, Jagger has made a miraculous recovery! We are so grateful to Healthy Paws for taking a lot of the financial stress out of this so we have been able to focus on his healing! I changed to Healthy Paws after using a different provider. Healthy Paws offered the same rate with a lower deductible and a 90% reimbursement. The other company was tedious to file claims and I felt that we were just another claim number. Unlike Healthy Paws, they never inquired how my pup was doing. It was apparent by the claims, she was gravely ill.

Healthy Paws was exemplary in every way for our beloved Standard Poodle Roxy, through the occasional mild problem here and there to her end-of-life illness, which came on full blast and required serious diagnostics and care as she neared the end. They are reasonable in their prices, very responsive in customer service, and friendly and responsible in all they do. Wish everything was as easy as Healthy Paws!
