Nationwide Pet Insurance

Nationwide issued the first pet insurance policy ever in the United States to TV's "Lassie" in 1982. At the time, the pet insurance brand was known as Veterninary Pet Inusurance (or VPI) & Nationwide was the underwriter for VPI's pet insurance policies.

Almost three decades later, in 2009, Nationwide acquired VPI. Since 2015, Nationwide has done away with VPI brand & they now operate their pet insurance products under the single, much improved & more recognizable brand: Nationwide Pet Insurance.

Nationwide Pet Insurance, which now offers coverage that's competitive with the best companies in the industry, is the single largest issuer of pet insurance policies in the country.

Company Overview:

Being a Fortune 100 company, Nationwide offers customers unparalleled financial stability and claims paying ability. And it's three pet plan offerings provide coverage for things most major pet insurance companies exclude. To us, two of the most noticeable differences is Nationwide stretches their coverage beyond just cats and dogs to include exotic pets and avians, and its "whole pet" and "pet wellness" plans cover routine stuff like checkups and vaccinations.

Nationwide offers three levels of pet coverage. Their most basic plan is called Pet Wellness and starts at $17 a month. It provides for essential yearly maintenance kinds of things, vaccinations, flea treatments, routine checkups, etc. Nationwide's second tier plan is called Major Medical and starts at $34 a month. This plan is good if you are only interested in taking care of accidents and illnesses, it covers things like surgery, hospital visits and prescription medication. Starting at $64 a month Whole Pet is essentially a combination of the other two plans, covering accident, illness, hereditary conditions and yearly pet wellness visits.

What's Included with Nationwide:

What's Not Covered?

Nationwide's coverage is one of the most comprehensive in the marketplace. However, there are of course standard things that are not covered.

Nationwide will not cover congenital, hereditary or chronic conditions that were pre-existing to issuance of the policy. Also taxes, grooming, boarding, storage, transport and waste disposal are not covered.

Additionally the company has a online customer knowledge base and contact form.

Nationwide Pet Insurance-Conclusion

Nationwide's Whole Pet with Wellness plan is comprehensive and simple and straightforward to use. You just submit your claim and receive 90% back, period. Also, as far as we can tell, Nationwide is the only pet insurance to offer wellness and preventative care in it's standard plans. There is no per incidence limit and no annual benefit limit. This makes it one of the most complete plans out there as it basically covers your pet for virtually any eventuality under the sun. Accident, illness, surgery, physical exams, vaccines, you could even get doggy acupuncture if you want.

The company's other two plans, Wellness and Major Medical reimburse according to a benefit schedule, which caps reimbursement at a set amount for each condition or service. With these plans you are not going to get the freedom you get with Whole Pet but both are relatively inexpensive. If your intention is to safeguard your pet against illness or injury and nothing more, Major Medical is a good bet for your money. If you simply want to make sure your pet is covered for normal preventative care and annual checkups, Pet Wellness is an excellent choice for the money.

Nationwide is also very flexible in the types of pets they'll cover, offering plans for most birds and a vast array of exotic pets. This is uncommon as most pet insurers typically focus on cats and dogs.

Great Insurance company for pets. I have it on both my Standard Poodles. Covers the most and pays claims quick.

I left Healthy Paws for Nationwide and what a mistake that was. I have submitted almost 10 claims totalling several thousand dollars and have only been reimbursed $87. This is by far the worst customer service group who takes over 30 days to pay a claim. It's been over 30 but the biggest headache is filing out a claim form; once you download and print it out (how many people have printers and scanners at home that are senior citizens who even know computers?). I haven't received any claim checks since inception. Healthy Paws doesn't make you go through this. We cancelled our policy and went back to healthy Paws.

Worse ever, Thought I would try pet insurance. I joined in January. Nationwide refused to pay my claim in March for a vet visit. They requested additional records from vet to insure it was not pre existing condition. Medical records provided, showing not a pre existing condition. They still would not pay, they said the records showed I might take her to another vet for Second opinion. Because I told my vet that statement, Which it should be any one's choice to get a second opinion, I still did nothing else but put in the claim for my normal vet bill. They refuse to pay the claim. This is the cheesiest, lowdown insurance company I have ever dealt with.

My Nationwide Pet Insurance policy for Molly went into effect 2-1-17, on 2-14-17 she began to throw up. Took her to the vet......2 days later she was having emergency surgery! I filed my claim and crossed my fingers. In rapid turn around time everything except a few cans of dog food out of the $978.16 final cost was either reimbursed or went towards my deductible!! My deductible is a very reasonable $250. I could not be more impressed or pleased with Nationwide!!!! Excellent customer service, quick turn around time for claims and excellent coverage. I almost waited another year to even start the policy-so glad I did not. You never know what could happen. Molly is only one and a half... Read More

I bought the most expensive insurance plan, the whole pet and wellness plan. They claim 90% of bills are covered and it's true. My german shephard (best dog in the world) was diagnosed with fistula(s) and the treatment is expensive and ongoing. He's also been put on a prescription diet. He's getting better. Without this insurance, I doubt most people could afford these bills out of pocket. I'm very impressed and grateful this plan is offered.

I have always had pets since I was a little girl. When I became a pet parent as an adult - I wish I would have had insurance for my first pets. Now that I have my two kitties - I was making sure I had coverage for them. Nationwide Pet Insurance is wonderful and submitting a claim is so easy. I am so glad I am a part of this family and will continue my coverage for every pet I ever own.

I am very happy with Nationwide and have recommended them to my friends and acquaintances. My puppy broke her leg at six months and had to have a costly operation. Nationwide covered 90%, plus 90% of followup visits. They also paid 90% of her spaying costs. It is easy to submit a claim and the website is very user friendly. The reimbursement time is minimal, compared to human medical reimbursements. I have no complaints whatsoever. Nationwide is on your side.

DISAPPOINTED!! POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE - 6 YEAR COVERAGE FOR 2 DOGS TOTAL INSURANCE PAID TO VPI- NATIONWIDE OVER THE 6 YEARS = $7,700 IN MID 2016 ONE OF THE 2 DOGS WAS FOUND WITH WHAT VPI- NATIONWIDE DEEMS AS A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. FROM MID 2016 THROUGH FEB. 2017 TOTAL VET AND HOSPITALIZATION FOR BOTH DOGS COST $17,900. THE DOG SURVIVED HAD $4,500 OF THE TOTAL AND WAS REIMBURSED $1,560 AND THE ONE THAT PASSED AWAY IN FEB. 2017 - TOTAL CHARGES TO SUSTAIN HIS PRECIOUS LIFE WAS $13,400 AND GUESS WHAT I WAS REIMBURSED --- $158.00. EVERY CONTACT WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS GREETED WITH-- WE DO NOT COVER PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS - ON AND ON AND ON. I NOTED THAT THE DOG WAS 5 YEARS OLD AND... Read More

Our boy Oakley has been recently diagnosed with Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. He had to have two blood transfusions and was in the animal emergency hospital for over a week. We were told this is a life long disease and he will probably always need to be on medication with possible relapses. Having Nationwide Pet Insurance made making very hard decisions easy. We didn't have to worry about how we would afford the bill and could just concentrate on getting him the best care ever. We submitted our claims and they were processed in days and we received a check in 2 weeks. Today Oakley celebrated his first birthday and we hope to have many more with him.
