Nationwide Pet Insurance

Nationwide issued the first pet insurance policy ever in the United States to TV's "Lassie" in 1982. At the time, the pet insurance brand was known as Veterninary Pet Inusurance (or VPI) & Nationwide was the underwriter for VPI's pet insurance policies.

Almost three decades later, in 2009, Nationwide acquired VPI. Since 2015, Nationwide has done away with VPI brand & they now operate their pet insurance products under the single, much improved & more recognizable brand: Nationwide Pet Insurance. 

Nationwide Pet Insurance, which now offers coverage that's competitive with the best companies in the industry, is the single largest issuer of pet insurance policies in the country.  

Company Overview:

Being a Fortune 100 company, Nationwide offers customers unparalleled financial stability and claims paying ability. And it's three pet plan offerings provide coverage for things most major pet insurance companies exclude. To us, two of the most noticeable differences is Nationwide stretches their coverage beyond just cats and dogs to include exotic pets and avians, and its "whole pet" and "pet wellness" plans cover routine stuff like checkups and vaccinations. 

Nationwide offers three levels of pet coverage. Their most basic plan is called Pet Wellness and starts at $17 a month. It provides for essential yearly maintenance kinds of things, vaccinations, flea treatments, routine checkups, etc. Nationwide's second tier plan is called Major Medical and starts at $34 a month. This plan is good if you are only interested in taking care of accidents and illnesses, it covers things like surgery, hospital visits and prescription medication. Starting at $64 a month Whole Pet is essentially a combination of the other two plans, covering accident, illness, hereditary conditions and yearly pet wellness visits.

What's Not Covered?

Nationwide's coverage is one of the most comprehensive in the marketplace. However, there are of course standard things that are not covered.

Nationwide will not cover congenital, hereditary or chronic conditions that were pre-existing to issuance of the policy. Also taxes, grooming, boarding, storage, transport and waste disposal are not covered.

Nationwide Pet Insurance-Conclusion

Nationwide's Whole Pet with Wellness plan is comprehensive and simple and straightforward to use. You just submit your claim and receive 90% back, period. Also, as far as we can tell, Nationwide is the only pet insurance to offer wellness and preventative care in it's standard plans. There is no per incidence limit and no annual benefit limit. This makes it one of the most complete plans out there as it basically covers your pet for virtually any eventuality under the sun. Accident, illness, surgery, physical exams, vaccines, you could even get doggy acupuncture if you want. 

The company's other two plans, Wellness and Major Medical reimburse according to a benefit schedule, which caps reimbursement at a set amount for each condition or service. With these plans you are not going to get the freedom you get with Whole Pet but both are relatively inexpensive. If your intention is to safeguard your pet against illness or injury and nothing more, Major Medical is a good bet for your money. If you simply want to make sure your pet is covered for normal preventative care and annual checkups, Pet Wellness is an excellent choice for the money.

Nationwide is also very flexible in the types of pets they'll cover, offering plans for most birds and a vast array of exotic pets. This is uncommon as most pet insurers typically focus on cats and dogs.

I have 2 dogs, the older is 11 and the younger is 2. I insure both of them with Nationwide. Last year my older dog had serious abdominal surgery and Nationwide reimbursed his quite substantial expenses quickly and easily. I would absolutely recommend Nationwide to anyone looking for coverage for their pets.

I would not even give them a star. I had vpi. I found a kitten and took it to two different vets and got 2 clean bills of health. The kitten had brown debri in the ear and it sneezed but the vets said he is healthy all the way around. I took it to a vet when we first found him and 2 days later took it to our normal vet as a double check he was only a few weeks old. So now that our kitten is a few months old he was diagnosed with a upper respiratory infection and they don't want to pay and they keep sending letters of oh we need 30 more days. Then I was told today that from the 4 week visits that my kitten had an ear infection and an upper respiratory which makes him pre existing.... Read More

they are full of sh-t. they made me upgrade to a major medical after 6 years of being with them and told me a dental cleaning for her breed would be covered and now when I called they said only 100 would be covered and nothing else. NO more bood tests nothing....I pay 70 month for nothing.

I wanted to give you feedback on our pet insurance. One of my dogs had emergency surgery for bladder rupture with several days overnight post surgically. I submitted all the claims was underwhelmed when I saw the reimbursement. One claim was $8,948.54 and they reimbursed $3,111.00. Just called to speak to a supervisor and she said they have set prices they pay for a diagnosis. She also said if the animal were to have another problem this calendar year they would not pay any more until the policy renews the next year. I told her this was inadequate for reimbursement. I also told her I would inform H.R. of my disappointment and would not take out their insurance next year.

Stay far away from Nationwide. THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU IF THEY WILL COVER A PROCEDURE UNTIL AFTER YOU DO IT REGARDLESS OF IF IT APPEARS THAT THEY SHOULD COVER IT. I got the most expensive plan they had and got the wellnes plan. My 5 year old German Shepherd went from perfect health to very sick in less than a week. Input her in a pet hospital. NATIONWIDE refused to tell me or the hospital what would be covered. I spent nearly $5,000 in two days just doing tests. All a gamble as to IF Nationwide would pay for anything. I was skeptical to purchase pet insurance especially since Mia is only almost 4. However, after a couple of incidents where the lawn crew left our gate open and Mia got out an toured the neighborhood and busy streets I felt it may be a good idea just in case one time she had a run in with a car or a rogue animal. Mia also had an unfortunate encounter with fireworks last year that has turned her into a nervous doggie now during thunderstorms and holidays where fireworks are set off now. I was a customer with VIP insurance for years. Then, Nationwide took it over. They are terrible. They deny claims on the smallest pretext. For my latest claim, they denied coverage for a fecal exam that was necessary to determine why my dog had diarrhea. They claimed that "wellness" procedures are not covered under the policy. When I explained to them that this procedure was not done as part of a routine exam but was necessary to determine why he was sick, they would not budge. It's the most rediculous reasoning I've ever heard from an insurance company -- and I used to work for one. The total bill was $260, of which they paid $48. Nationwide stinks. They take your money, then the moment you file a claim they have you send them every doctor's record from the time the dog was born. Then they turn down your claim because they say your dog has a pre-existing condition. Stay away from this insurance company, they are just a scam!!!!!! I would never think that would do this to me. They advertise that "Nationwide is on your side", but the reality is that they don't give a damn about you or your pet. As far as I'm concerned they rate a negative five stars. I signed up for Nationwide through my employer to cover my 3 cats. Same as all the others are saying: there were "pre existing condition" and "exclusions" to death. They had never been sick a day in their life but I was told they had conditions that could be re reviewed after six months provided they were monitored. Of course the visits to the pet to monitor them were excluded. One cat's name had been mis spelled. That got a denial too. It was also denied when I resubmitted with the correct spelling because there was already a claim for the same cat/same visit that had been denied. This was the same claim we were resubmitting. I'm not sure why some people are so unhappy. We've had Nationwide since 2006. We have insured multiple dogs in that time and I have never had an issue. We did have to wait about 6 weeks or so for one complicated claim, but I was reimbursed beyond what I expected. We also had a dog die during a dental. I submitted everything and they actually combed through the policy to make sure we got as much as possible which ended up being more than expected. Obviously we would have preferred to have our dog back, but having most of the unexpected expenses (CPR, IV meds during attempts at resuscitation, etc) was helpful financially.
