Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our dog Millie presented with a few symptoms that seemed unrelated but turned out to be allergies. She had several visits to the vet and extensive testing, which was quite expensive. She is now receiving immunotherapy in hopes of reducing her reaction to trees, grass, etc. Healthy Paws is outstanding! We've always insured our pets and Healthy Paws has the simplest claims process by far as well as the fastest claim turnaround time. It is also the least expensive when compared to Trupanion and other pet insurance companies. I highly recommend Healthy Paws

I have had pet health insurance ever since one of my dogs became very ill with cancer in 2011 and over the course of one month, had incurred nearly $18,000 in medical bills. I shopped around several companies for policies and talked to a number of people about their experience with other companies before choosing Healthy Paws. Even now, 8 years after first getting coverage, they are still an outstanding company. I could not be happier with the coverage, the price or the service. I'll be a customer for as long as I have dogs and they're around to provide coverage. I wish human health insurance companies were as customer-focused, transparent, fast and friendly as Healthy Paws!!

We recently submitted a bulk of claims for our pets. My procrastination for submitting them was mostly because the last time I submitted claims it seemed a bit cumbersome. But, I sat down this past weekend and went to the Healthy Paws web portal where I noticed the process appeared very streamlined. I scanned in all of our receipts and sent them off as claims. I first purchased the policy for our Cocker Spaniel last Sept when he was 4 months old. With $250 deductible and 90% coverage, the premium was $41.74 per month. Now one year later they premium was raised to $51.76 per month. That is a 24% increase!!! To make matter worse, the same coverage for the same age and breed of dog would currently cost a NEW subscriber only $39.66 per month. When I questioned this, they just gave me double talk saying if I cancelled and re-enrolled I would have to worry about pre existing conditions... Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. The pricing for your current policy is per the rating plan approved by your state's Insurance Department and we are not permitted to deviate from those rates for existing policyholders. The quote you generated recently is the approved pet insurance product filing for NEW accounts only. We bought pet insurance when we got a puppy. I checked the top 10 pet insurance sites and Healthy Paws was the one I chose. I’m so extremely glad I did. I’ve filed almost a dozen claims in just the first year and after my initial deductible, almost all my claims have been paid in full. My puppy recently had to have patella surgery and Healthy Paws reviewed by bill and reimbursed me within a week. I’ve told all my friends and family, who are looking for pet insurance, Healthy Paws is the insurance they need.

One of our little guys woke up paralyzed; we rush to vet and then ER. He had surgery and will start therapy in a couple weeks (which is ALSO covered!!). I submitted the invoice and it was processed in less than a week, no questions or concerns. I called to asked about therapy coverage and the person was so helpful and asked how our guy was doing. I also received an email asking how his healing is going!!! This company gets me!! <3

I am sure you hear this a lot but my Lilly is a baby. I can't tell you how stressful it was knowing she was going in for a major surgery at her age and such a painful one at that. She really needed this surgery because her chronic ear infections were just getting worse and worse. Her quality of living was not optimal and something had to be done. Having this insurance policy was a beacon of light to me because I didn't have to worry about the money but instead focus on my baby's health and recovery. Healthy Paws is the only reason my staffie is alive today. My puppy came down with an awful infection. The first week in the hospital was $17,000.00 alone. The assistance and care I received from the Healthy Paws staff was amazing. There was no "questioning" of the bill, no delay in payment, and the staff seemed to genuinely care. We have both of our pets with Healthy Paws and would never go with another company. We often recommend Healthy Paws to friends and after they compare other companies, they also end up with Healthy Paws. You cannot go wrong.
