Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

SHELL COMPANY ! FRAUD! Bait & switch! No! They have raised the rates 50% in 2 years. My dog is less than 4 years old. They “Denied” the vet visit claiming “Pre- Existing Condition.” The vet confirmed it was a “New Condition.” Adding insult to injury they Raised the rate again. When I called Customer Services- it is a fake answering service. When I ask to speak to a Supervisor or a Manager, they say no one is available. They are trained to say,”A specialist will call you.” No one called me. Then, I received fraudulent e-mails,”We just tried to call you. You did not respond.” and they cease the claim... without having called me - no caller id - call. I never receive monthly statements of my... Read More

Jasmine - We appreciate the fact you’ve been with us over the years and that we have been able to provide coverage for your pets claims during that time. We truly understand that no one likes any form of a premium increase. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. As the Customer Liaison Manager explained to you via email, new technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Your monthly premium has gone up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state over the years. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. When you enroll with Healthy Paws, your monthly premium is charged automatically to your credit or debit card each month on the same date that you enrolled. Since you are automatically billed, our Pet Parents use their credit card statements to keep track of these charges with no need for any other invoice. We also do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) and routine dental cleaning part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. In regards to our call centers, we have multiple centers throughout the United States. If these trained representatives cannot answer your question, your concern is sent to one of our highly trained customer care team members in our WA office. If you have requested a callback, our team will call and if they cannot reach you, we do send an email letting you know we called and requesting a good time for the team member to call again. Give your baby a big hug from us. The Healthy Paws Team

Healthy Paws just increased my monthly premium by almost 30%. Maybe they think being a number one rated company justifies this but as a long-time customer, I feel betrayed.

Julie - We truly appreciate that you have been a part of the Healthy Paws family over the years and that we have been able to provide coverage for your pets. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase and your pending increase is larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed and approved within each state’s Department of Insurance. These reflect the cost of treatment, advances in veterinary medicine, your individual pet’s breed, gender, age and other factors, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region your pets reside. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your babies can have continued access to the best veterinary care. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. Give your babies big hugs from us.

If you're doing research for the best pet insurance to get for your dog - or deciding whether to get it at all - allow me to do that research for you. Get insurance, and get Healthy Paws. Healthy Paws was the best purchase I have ever made - hands down. Rates, deductible, and what's covered are all pretty comparable but Healthy Paws is rare in that there are no annual or lifetime maximums. My dog has needed three major surgeries, and all were covered 90%; that gave us the peace of mind to go forward with what was best for Roslin without having to worry about the financial burden. Making a claim is incredibly easy and processing is lightning fast - and better yet, with each time Roslin had... Read More

Raised rates over 26% on our dog that is under 5 years old with no medical problems and/or claims ever in 3 years! Bait and switch insurer. Would not recommend as they raise rates claiming to reflect local area veterinary costs which is complete nonsense! 26%? Our veterinarian hasn’t raised prices in 7 years since our previous dog! Find another insurer! Read all fine print!

Healthy Paws was recommended to me by my adult children. Their phone app is super easy to use. My 3 year old rescue had some health problems requiring diagnostic intervention. Healthy Paws has been amazing and compassionate throughout the process.

Dog owners for 30 years, we never had pet insurance before last year. We had occasionally checked out other pet insurance plans and decided against them. Last spring we adopted a pup from a rescue agency that recommended Healthy Paws to us. After reviewing coverage options, we decided to try it for a year and signed up. In March, our pooch dislocated his right patella and tore a ligament. This required expensive surgery to repair. We were very pleased with how easy it was to file a claim with Healthy Paws and how quickly it was processed. We appreciated the excellent communication from the members of the Healthy Paws team regarding the claim. We have also valued the warm tone of the... Read More

I adopted Mia in Jan. 2012 and in April of that year after researching dog insurance I signed Mia up for Heathy Paws dog insurance and it has been a god send to me. In May of 2015 Mia became very sick, found out she had a very bad liver. Since then she has been in and out the vets constantly. Healthy Paws has been there for us the whole time. There was never any problems with payments, and they have paid out a lot. Thank you Healthy Paws Fran Sanders

So happy with them. I have never had pet insurance for my dogs but felt it was the responsible decision to make. I am extremely happy I did. My dog needed to have invasive, severe knee surgery unexpectedly. submitting the claim was extremely easy and I was reimbursed within a week and a half I’d say from submission to receiving a check. Whenever you call healthy pets they are extremely helpful and just all-around wonderful. I highly, highly recommend this pet insurance and if you are considering getting insurance it is absolutely worth it.
