Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have unfortunately had to use my insurance on my 5 year old golden retriever several times. He has needed medicine for allergies and more recently he had surgery on both back legs after ACL ruptures and it could not have been easier. No questions asked and the claim was processed within days. They even checked in to see how his recover was going. I could not be happier with Healthy Paws

Healthy Paws is the best insurance company I’ve ever dealt with. They are very quick to finish claims and pay back money owed. They truly cover everything they promise. Everything is done by computer and claims are very easy to complete. They truly care about your pet and follow up to make sure they are doing okay. Getting Healthy Paws was the best decision I’ve made!

Third time was a charm! The first two pet insurance companies that I tried were such a hassle to deal with. Healthy Paws makes it so easy! Just download their app... when you have a new claim just take a picture of the invoice through their app and hit send. You will receive emails saying they have received your claim, then another that they are reviewing it, then a final one saying it’s been completed. At that point they will either send you a check for reimbursement or you can have it direct deposited into your account. Healthy Paws has always been very fair with reimbursement. It is such a quick an easy process... I highly recommend Healthy Paws for your fur babies!

I have used Healthy Paws Insurance for two dogs for a total of 5 years. In both cases, HP has delivered on what they say. It was easy to talk to someone who,patiently, listened and answered all of my questions. Additionally, the claim processing is quick and typically processed within a week with a check received shortly after completion . This is excellent and consistent Customer Service . I encourage my friends to use Healthy Paws for the pets!

I love the personal service. Healthy Paws sent a follow up postcard and email to check up on my dog after she had to be hospitalized for a life saving procedure. That extra step meant a lot to us. They are also extremely easy to work with and very efficient. I did everything I needed to do and sent my claim right on my phone, and in under a week I received my reimbursement checks.

Both of my cats have had insurance through Healthy Paws since they were kittens. Their policies are reasonably priced. By and large the coverage is good - I wish they covered dental because teeth cleaning for cats is expensive - but for medical stuff I have no complaints. Filing a claim is super easy and reimbursements come quickly. If you have to contact HP with a question they are helpful and friendly. I’ve recommended Healthy Paws to many friends!

Healthy Paws Insurance has been amazing! My beagle, Marley, tore his ACL completely and surgery was going to be quite expensive (over $4,000). If I had not had Healthy Paws insurance, I may not have been able to give him the best care possible. Thankfully, I didn't have to worry because I had Healthy Paws insurance coverage. I submitted the claim through the app which was super easy and in less than 5 days, the claim was paid promptly and for everything that was supposed to be covered under my policy. There was no hassle or additional medical documentation required. I am beyond grateful for Healthy Paws and would recommend it to anyone who has pets! Respectfully, Jenny H.

SHELL COMPANY ! FRAUD! Bait & switch! No! They have raised the rates 50% in 2 years. My dog is less than 4 years old. They “Denied” the vet visit claiming “Pre- Existing Condition.” The vet confirmed it was a “New Condition.” Adding insult to injury they Raised the rate again. When I called Customer Services- it is a fake answering service. When I ask to speak to a Supervisor or a Manager, they say no one is available. They are trained to say,”A specialist will call you.” No one called me. Then, I received fraudulent e-mails,”We just tried to call you. We truly understand that no one likes any form of a premium increase. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. As the Customer Liaison Manager explained to you via email, new technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Your monthly premium has gone up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state over the years. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. When you enroll with Healthy Paws, your monthly premium is charged automatically to your credit or debit card each month on the same date that you enrolled. Since you are automatically billed, our Pet Parents use their credit card statements to keep track of these charges with no need for any other invoice. We also do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) and routine dental cleaning part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium.
