How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Extras

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

After losing my two dogs within 5 months of each other I often wondered what more I could have done for them with the financial ability to do so. When I got a new puppy and she had a tendency to put everything she saw in her mouth I thought I would make an investment and get insurance. After looking at many different companies and plans I went with Healthy Paws. The ability for me to choose my payback percentage and deductible and customize my plan was a huge draw. The phone app is a godsend. The moment I get an invoice I just take a photo on the app and let it get processed! Unfortunately at just two years old my little girl was diagnosed with a pretty bad autoimmune disease. heathy paws... Read More

BEWARE OF HEALTHY PAWS I have had Healthy Paws for a year now and I'm currently searching for another pet insurance company. I'm shocked no one has complained about them because they have treated my pet horribly. First off, when I first spoke to them on the phone a year ago about insuring my small 3 year old mix dog, they said they cover exam fees if the exam is diagnostic and leads to treatment. They also told me they need proof that she is healthy with no preexisting condition. My dog hadn't seen a vet in over a year so I decided to pay $70 to have a vet perform a nose to tail examination, He wrote them a letter and sent in his documents stating she was in perfect health.... Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Gerri, We're sorry that your baby injured her paw. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. Your policy documents and our website outline the need for medical records. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Anyone visiting our website can see information regarding policy exclusions and medical record requirements on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” or "Frequently Asked Questions" page. Give your girl a big hug from us.

Healthy Paws has lived up to all my expectations and more. Our poodle-mix rescue was a healthy one-year-old when we got her. She's eight now and Healthy Paws has helped us keep her going. She's had major dental work ($3600), two pancreatic attack incidents, several injuries, and ongoing allergy medications. Healthy Paws reimburses us promptly and sends messages asking how she is doing. Whenever we need Veterinary services, we do not hesitate to get our dog the care she needs. This insurance gives us great peace of mind.

We can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. Putting in a claim is super easy with your phone and they reimburse you very quickly. Our very athletic shitzu terrier mix Lola just blew out her ACL and required TPLO surgery. This was her second time. The first one was 4 years ago on her right and this time on the left. Not an inexpensive procedure. Thank goodness for Healthy Paws.

Our dog Tofu recently underwent surgery for an intestinal obstruction. His recovery was complicated and we were very worried about him pulling through. The stress of taking care of Tofu was difficult enough; at least we didn't have to worry about the high medical expenses thanks to the excellent coverage we have through Healthy Paws. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance covered everything they promise to cover with no questions asked and with a quick turn around time. I would highly recommend everyone who loves their pet to take out a Healthy Paws insurance for peace of mind. The last thing you want to worry about while carrying for your sick pet is how you're going to cover the bills!

We've had Healthy Paws policies for our pets for 6 years now, and we are very happy with the level of service they have provided us over the years. When adding a pet, they are very thorough, but it's necessary and has the added bonus of making sure we have records of our pet's histories, which we like to keep track of anyway. The younger the pet, the easier it is to enroll! Once enrolled, though, upkeep is very simple. I just take pictures of all my pet's invoices/labs and submit a claim on my phone, no writeup required. We recently experienced our first incident where we went beyond our deductible due to our cat being hospitalized for a week. Luckily, he came out of it like a champ.... Read More

Healthy Paws delivers & trully cares for your animals. I highly recomend it. Our puppy Pomeranian broke his leg & since he is out first pet I didn't even know you can buy pet insurance so inexpensively. After his 5K surgery & after care I was determine to find quality pet insurance just in case something like that was to happen in the future. Sure enough couple of months later our dog was diagnosed with hereditary hip disease & needed FHO surgery. I was so relieved Healthy Paw took care of almost whole amount after $250 deductible. It was my best decision ever. They even contacted me to find out his progress after surgery. Can't thank them enough💗
