Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

This is the best pet insurance - simple to understand plans, excellent customer service, the quickest and easiest claim system - application approval with in a week and reimbursement within 2-3 weeks. I have claimed twice in the last 5 years and each time I was so grateful to have this insurance to help give me peace of mind in providing good care for my cat and knowing that the insurance process would be simple and easy. I highly recommend this insurance - it is worth it.

I had to deal with multiple people, who basically sent the same form letters to me. Never talked to a real live person, We have two dogs. We enrolled both in two different companies to compare service. Both dogs came down with a bacterial infection over the holidays. The dog not covered by Healthy Paws had to be rushed to NC State Vet School Emergency Department during the night. Two days later, the dog covered under Healthy Paws was admitted to our local vet hospital .We filed with both companies as soon as possible, as the upfront payment was considerable for the two admissions . With the other company, I dealt with one person, who walked me thru the entire process, and emailed me... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
troxlersharon - We’re sorry that your baby wasn’t feeling well and that our customer service did not meet your expectations. We do our best to be transparent regarding our need for medical records. All claim decisions are based on your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions that would keep us from approving a claim. We appreciate your efforts in providing those records which allowed us to process your claim. In regards to setting up direct deposit, it is industry practice to send multiple micro-deposits to ensure communication between the financial institutions. It can take 7-10 business days for the direct deposit to be functional on an account after the process has started. Give your baby a hug from us.

My dog tends to go to the vet for random issues that occur, but I know that every time she does, HealthyPaws will be quick to help me out. Filing a claim is so easy and they reimburse me almost instantly. They truly care about their customers — even reach out to follow up with how my sweet girl is doing! HealthyPaws has been a life saver financially for us — I highly recommend!

When our little Peep-a-poo went through bladder surgery for bladder stones, Healthy Paws paid exactly how we expected. She is recovering and feeling very well these days and so thankful we had the pet insurance. We highly recommend this insurance to all pet owners. THANK YOU HEALTHY PAWS for making our experience less stressful.

Quite simply the "best investment" I have ever made. Our dog has needed four major surgeries. We are able to get him excellent care but it is not cheap. Healthy Paws ALWAYS lives up to their end of the bargain. Submitting claims on line is very simple even for a dinosaur like me and the claims are processed within a couple of days. The "no cap" aspect means that whatever our dog needs, provided the care is covered (and there are no secrets as to what is covered) the claims get paid. Because of Healthy Paws, we just worry about our pup getting better, not if we can afford getting him the medically necessary care he needs. I cannot recommend Healthy Paws highly enough.

My 8 month puppy got into a chemical or poison at a 2 week train and board facility. She was in the hospital for a week on IV's and a feeding tube. My bill was over $8,000, but thank goodness for Healthy Paws. I submitted the bill along with her medical records and within 3 days of them receiving the documents my claim was approved and I received over $6,000 in reimbursements. Not only did they pay quickly they followed up to see how she was doing. Because of Healthy Paws I didn't have to worry about the cost of her care and was able to just focus on getting her better. They are the best!

When you get insurance the fine print always seems so daunting. Even after I read it I was still worried that when I needed to use it that it wouldn’t cover the cost. We had an emergency with my dog and they helped me through the claims process very easily. They even contacted my vet to get the specific forms they needed that they didn’t send originally. I got my refund very fast and I couldn’t be happier.

These people stink. Most everything on a bill is not covered. They continually ask for medical records over and over, even if you recently submitted. Simply not worth the cost.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
timpanob - We're sorry that you are not satisfied with your plan. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the plan documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Of the claims that were submitted and not covered, they fell into one of the limited exclusions listed above. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. We appreciate your efforts to provide us with those records, but we're still in need of some missing information. Once those records are received our team can process your claims.

I purchased Healthy Paws insurance a few years ago, when we got a second dog. I read reviews and chose Healthy Paws based on them. I have not been disappointed! Their website is easy to navigate, the policy was easy to set up and all of the terms are outlined. You can choose from different reimbursement percentages. I chose a 90% reimbursement. I have had to use it several times for one of our dogs, most recently when he ran into the road and was hit by a car. I uploaded the info they asked for and they responded within a day, asking for additional info if they needed it. I uploaded that and they again responded within a day. I had all of the documentation to them on a Tuesday afternoon,... Read More
