Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We have had healthy paws insurance for 9 years and couldn’t be happier. We have three dogs including a rescued English bulldog. English bulldog=lots of vet bills. Never had a problem with claims being paid, coverage etc and we have easily been to the vet over 100 times for ACL tears, thyroid issues, cancer, dental issues (17 teeth pulled), etc. healthy paws has real people working there who truly understand the love we have for our pets. 100% worth every cent. Will never go anywhere else

I have a crazy, rambunctious, maniac bowling ball of a dog. Shes a frenchie. About a month ago, we found her silent and shaking in the kitchen 2 weeks ago. It was so scary. We didnt know what had happened. The hardest part about caring for animals is that they can't tell you what hurts so its often a guessing game of trial and error to help them feel better. We finally got to the bottom of her symptoms after a second trip to the neurologist to get an MRI. Her MRI revealed a nasty inner ear infection that had burst her ear drum and the infection has started to "leak" into her brain. Meningitis. I know. Sounds scary. And it was. But luckily, we think we caught it just in time,... Read More

I’ve had pet health insurance for a long time now, from different companies and Healthy Paws has been by far the best, their terms are clear from the start, you know what you will get, no hidden exclusions or weird codes that render your claim ineligible for coverage. I have 90% reimbursement with a $200 deductible and it is worth every penny. The claim process is extremely easy, and payment is super fast. I recently had to take my dog to the ER and my only concern was my dog’s wellbeing, I didn’t have to worry at the same time about this unexpected expense (over $2k). I have an English Bulldog (a breed with multiple health issues) and they don’t consider breed related issues a... Read More

When I adopted my little dog from the shelter, I realized I had a real bouncing ball of energy. After 3 visits to the vet in the first few weeks, I started looking for insurance. I Googled Best Pet Insurance 2018. The next month, my dog broke her leg jumping off a high table onto the ground. When you have a new puppy, you don't know what they'll do next! Healthy Paws helped me every step of the way. I was so glad I didn't sign up with any of the brochure insurance I saw in the vet clinic. Get Healthy Paws immediately, right after you get your new pet!

Purchasing pet health insurance four years ago has seriously been the best decision I have ever made for my dog. I thought, my “puppy”, who is now 13 1/2 years old, and I were just dealing with normal issues associated with aging. Healthy Paws was already helping pay for acupuncture treatments for arthritis when my dog suddenly became very ill and was ultimately diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. The condition very nearly took my poor dog’s life and there was so much to handle but Healthy Paws made the financial decisions easy. The claims process is crazy simple and can be done through an app on your phone. Everything was straightforward and their customer service is excellent —... Read More

I don't think I can say enough good things about Healthy Paws. From the very beginning they have been easy and informative. A few weeks ago, with no warning, we ended up in the emergency vet with one of our dogs. With all of the choices and devastation we were facing and not knowing what would happen, the fact that we had insurance for him was one weight lifted off our shoulders. The bills were about as massive as the tumor they found inside of him, but we never had to worry about that part of it. Every time I spoke with someone at Healthy Paws I could tell that they actually cared about what we were going through. Whenever they needed more information they would immediately offer to... Healthy Paws is nothing short of amazing. I did SO much research when I was first looking into pet insurance, and when I chose them, probably like other pet parents I said to myself “well here goes nothing. I hope this helps.” Thanks to them I have saved thousands (literally.) thanks to them, one of my rescue dogs Lily, had to have ACL replacement surgery, and they covered it! Which means we only had to pay out $200 bucks! I can’t thank the whole team enough at Healthy Paws for doing what they do. The customer service is amazing, the all is is SO easy to use and navigate, and after her surgery, they even checked up on her! 100% best company to go with.
