Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Purchasing pet health insurance four years ago has seriously been the best decision I have ever made for my dog. I thought, my “puppy”, who is now 13 1/2 years old, and I were just dealing with normal issues associated with aging. Healthy Paws was already helping pay for acupuncture treatments for arthritis when my dog suddenly became very ill and was ultimately diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. The condition very nearly took my poor dog’s life and there was so much to handle but Healthy Paws made the financial decisions easy. The claims process is crazy simple and can be done through an app on your phone. Everything was straightforward and their customer service is excellent —... Read More

I don't think I can say enough good things about Healthy Paws. From the very beginning they have been easy and informative. A few weeks ago, with no warning, we ended up in the emergency vet with one of our dogs. With all of the choices and devastation we were facing and not knowing what would happen, the fact that we had insurance for him was one weight lifted off our shoulders. The bills were about as massive as the tumor they found inside of him, but we never had to worry about that part of it. Every time I spoke with someone at Healthy Paws I could tell that they actually cared about what we were going through. Whenever they needed more information they would immediately offer to... Healthy Paws is nothing short of amazing. I did SO much research when I was first looking into pet insurance, and when I chose them, probably like other pet parents I said to myself “well here goes nothing. I hope this helps.” Thanks to them I have saved thousands (literally.) thanks to them, one of my rescue dogs Lily, had to have ACL replacement surgery, and they covered it! Which means we only had to pay out $200 bucks! I can’t thank the whole team enough at Healthy Paws for doing what they do. The customer service is amazing, the all is is SO easy to use and navigate, and after her surgery, they even checked up on her! 100% best company to go with.

I love Healthy Paws! They genuinely care about our pets. It is quick and easy to file claims and get reimbursements. Communication with the company is fantastic by both phone and email. All pets need health insurance just like humans, and Healthy Paws is the best!

Healthy Paws is the absolute BEST! I have had many others having 4 cats for many years and there is no comparison. I wish humans had such good health insurance. They have paid me over $50k for the care of my cat without hesitation and without questioning every bill and making you jump through hoops to get your money like other pet health insurance cos. And they have super technology and a great app to take the picture of your bill. You submit that and within hour you got an email that they are processing and within a couple of weeks your money. They are truly SUPERB!

Healthy Paws has been excellent! I am so grateful to them for helping me take the best care of my dog! She has had some heart issues and needed surgery when she ate something she shouldn't have! It is easy to submit claims, and they are always prompt to process and pay! Thank you so much for everything!

Healthy Paws has saved both my dogs lives - and saved me! I have one dog with a severe heart condition whose monthly medication bill alone is well over $100, not to mention all the echocardiograms, xrays and bloodwork. My other dog has been a habitual rock eater - costing thousands of dollars on surgeries. With Healthy Paws the claim process is simple and seamless, and refunds are within days. In addition they even check in to see how my dogs are doing - and I am not talking automated messages - I mean personal checking in with real care. I love this organization!

I bought Healthy Paws insurance for my Teacup Yorkie cause it had really great reviews and previous customers said they actually pay. Other insurances I used in the past were awful but Healthy Paws for sure gets 5 stars. They were there for me for all my visits, were reasonably priced and actually paid me the 80% of what they covered. Recently my fur baby went into the hospital for a week in the critical care unit. It cost me $9000 for treatment before he came home. Healthy Paws representatives were friendly and helped me get my claims paid. I received over $7000 back. Unfortunately my baby passed away a week later, I filed his last bill which included his cremation services on the bill.... Read More

About a year after I adopted my rescue pup he was diagnosed with a serious disease. He had been in remission for almost two years but recently had a flare-up. Both times he was ill he had to go to the emergency room, and then needed numerous follow-up ultrasounds and other costly tests and treatments. Healthy Paws has been absolutely wonderful. Filing a claim is easy, claims are processed very quickly, and everyone I have spoken to is knowledgeable and caring. Healthy Paws is the best!
