Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My Vizsla, Trooper, is an adorable, energetic boy that has been a part of our family since he was 7 weeks old. He loves snuggling with all of us, going for walks… And eating socks. He’s done this four times. I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but the first three were not an issue. The fourth one was the magic bullet. It was lodged in his gut and surgery was required to remove it. My mom used to laugh at me for having health insurance for my dog. She doesn’t anymore, after she saw just how wonderful the folks at Healthy Paws were in our time of need. The app is easy to use, very helpful and I even filed my claim with it! Their follow-up is amazing, very friendly and I was receiving... Read More

Absolutely the upmost best!!! I enrolled my dog as a puppy after much search of other companies and I have NEVER been disappointed. They have covered everything they said they would and filing a claim and reimbursements were easy and in a timely manner. I would strongly advise anyone to invest in Healthy Paws Insurance.

I've had Healthy Paws for my dog's 7 entire years of life (and counting) and it was a wonderful decision. The claims process couldn't be easier. They are always fair and fast. They sometimes even send personal notes to check in on my pup. They are very affordable, with lower than expected increases in monthly premiums as my dog has aged. I don't remember if they were the cheapest. I'm sure you can always find a cheaper plan... but at what real price? I know when my dog's curiosity gets the best of him that Healthy Paws has my back.

We love Healthy Paws! Could not be happier with the customer service and support provided through not only regular checkups but the recent major emergency surgery our kitty went through. The reimbursement was so quick and easy, we can't even imagine the additional financial stress we would have had to go through if not for Healthy Paws.

Healthy Paws Life Insurance is a Life Saver and they are So Helpful and Really Care!!! My Spaniel Molly came down with Anemia with IMHA in the latter part of 2016 and was diagnosed by our nearby University small animal Veterinarians Clinic in the spring of 2017 when she was almost 11 years old. Very thankfully most expenses for her medical care from this illness and related problems with her health has been covered with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance (I signed up for this insurance when she was about 5 1/2 years old). So when she came down with IMHA we really needed the help this insurance provided for her medical expenses, and now she is doing very well though it has been a challenging road... Read More

Highly recommend HealthyPaws. There was no questions asked nor delays in reimbursing claims. Also like that there is no limit as with other pet insurances.

healthypaws saved the day. having to make a choice between your pet's health and your pocket book would be a devastating decision. healthy paws covered everything that could possible be covered (they do not cover the exam, and of course there is a deductible) with no arguments nor shady fine print escapism when my pup came down with multiple pneumonia and required extensive care. their customer service is top notch (they pick right up when you call (no phone tree to pick and choose through), and checked in on my boy after all the problems to see how he was doing). the price is within range of other insurance carriers. and they donate to charity. i am so grateful to be able to... Deceptive marketing. Would not recommend this company to anyone. Be sure to read the policy and notice how they define deductible.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
James, We make every effort to inform our clients on how our reimbursement calculation works. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our "Frequent Asked Questions" page, and on our "For Customers" page within our website. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state's Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement.

Janelle and Nicky helped me with my claim. My dog unexpectedly needed orthopedic surgery due to a crucial ligament break. Surgery cost over $4,000 and healthy paws helped me cover more than half of the cost. I paid a $200 deductible and 20% of the bill because that's the plan i chose. Talking to Janelle and Nicky it was warming how much they truly care and they talked to me as friends they cared about how she did from surgery. I got reimbursed direct deposit a week after my claim. It was easy doing it through the app. I am thankful I have insurance for my dog and I am satisfied with the service I have received.

Healthy Paws has pushed my claim/reimbursement out weeks. I have been without money, gas, food for my dog and I for over a week already and have no idea when I will see any money.

JT, We received your claim the middle of the week of 11/5 and it was processed the beginning of last week. Your reimbursement via direct deposit was also initiated the beginning of last week. It can take 3-5 business days for the funds to reach your bank account, so you should see it any day now. We’re sorry that you’re having financial issues and hope you and your dog stay well.
