Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot express fully what a relief it is to know that I can take my little Yorkie to the vet and be able to get her the tests and proper treatment she needs when she is sick. Since I know that I will be getting reimbursed by Healthy Paws, I feel like she can get the proper care she deserves without me having to make the gut wrenching decisions of deciding to do only what I can afford. Healthy Paws has always paid, every single time, without question and very quickly, and they make it easy to file right on their web site. It is a blessing to have this insurance.

Our dog Sam (now 11) has required ongoing medical treatment (and at times emergency care) for most of his life. Healthy Paws have been covering him since the age of 4 and have never denied a claim. They have been steadfast in their support and we couldn't be more grateful. Thank you Healthy Paws for everything you do.

Did you know that if your pet is injured or sick, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance does NOT cover the veterinarian's charge to examine, diagnose and possibly treat your pet? That's right! The vets exam fee, where the doctor diagnoses whats wrong with your sick or injured pet, prescribes meds and attends to your pets needs is NOT covered. I found that out when my little dog started coughing. Took her to the vet, who examined her and prescribed antibiotics. Heathy Paws only covers the pills! The bigger cost, the vet's charge, they wont touch. A Healthy Paws Manager said to me, 'It would cost too much if we covered the veterinarians exam charges'. What kind of a Health Insurance plan doesn't cover... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Richard - we're sorry that your baby was having coughing issues. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. We sincerely hope your girl is feeling better!

Long review but well worth the read!! The BEST decision I ever made was to insure my Havanese with Healthy Paws. I shopped for months before Jesse came to me. I don't even think Jesse was born yet while I was shopping :)! I knew my best bud would have health insurance. Like yourself, I read my share of Health Insurance company's and their reviews, some policy's where difficult to understand, I felt I was reading the same thing over and over. I wanted to be sure I found the right Insurance company to insure Jesse's health through his years, I'm compulsive my nature so it had to be the best! When I did my research with Healthy Paws I found it easy to understand their policy, great reviews,... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for many years and they have been wonderful. They take care of claims efficiently and promptly. Nothing feels better than when you get a vet bill for $5200 for an ACL repair and you have insurance that covers 90% and will cover rehab too. Also they make it easy to file a claim and it can be done on line too. I have 4 dogs and they are all covered.

After polling friends on Facebook for pet insurance reccomendations, Healthy Paws was the clear winner. When I switched over to them my payments were cut almost in half and my service and satisfaction doubled! My dog had to get TPLO surgery on both back knees over the course of 2018. As stated in my coverage, Healthy Paws paid 80% of the entire bill within about a week from the surgery. They also followed up with an e-mail to see how my dog was doing. After the second surgery the follow up e-mail asked how she was doing after her second surgery! These guys are awesome. Plus, they have direct deposit!

I adopted a wonderful husky puppy in June in which I immediately enrolled her at Healthy Paws after friends had recommended it to me. Recently I found out that my sweet girl has issues in her back knees and would need surgery to correct them if she had any hope of being able to run and play like a normal dog. She has now undergone 2 knee surgery's in the last month and Healthy Paw has been incredible and a life saver for me financially. They have been very kind and caring and have processed my claims smoothly and quickly. I am SO incredibly thankful for her insurance coverage and would highly recommend!

This is a premiere insurance company with amazing customer service. When our beloved hound dog was diagnosed with kidney failure and spent 7 days in the hospital, the peace of mind provided by the knowledge that Healthy Paws was backing us up was extraordinary. Thanks to Healthy Paws, we could focus on treating him. Healthy Paws covered the entire hospitalization within a week! Important backstory: we are with Healthy Paws because a friend who had the same pet insurance that we had at the time incurred substantial hospitalization costs only to have all of the claims denied. Even if you currently have other insurance, switch to Healthy Paws immediately.
