How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Extras

Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I wanted to take the time to write up a thorough review for Healthy Paws after a recent experience with my cat, Ava. I adopted Ava in January of 2018 as an 8 week old, healthy little kitten. While I had been wanting to adopt an older kitty, I thought that by adopting a younger one that I could perhaps avoid the older cat health problems for the first few years. However, I vowed to be the best cat mom for Ava that I could be, and I looked into insurance for her. I did extensive research on this and ended up picking Healthy Paws for her. They had reasonable prices, great coverage, and awesome customer service. The first year or so went by and I did need to utilize her insurance once for a... Read More

We have carried Healthpaws insurance on both of our Dobermans since we brought them home. We filed a claim periodically but nothing like over the past holidays. Our oldest 8 year old Gracie was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia. This is a devastating disease with 6 days in ICU. Healthypaws paid her claims on a timely basis taking that weight off of us. Six months later she has been released from vet care, off her meds and back to playing with her sister. If we didn't have this insurance, we would not have been able to save her. Thank you Healthlypaws!

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance was there for me and covered 80%of my bill! What a financial relief that was ,considering I am retired and on a fixed income! They were compassionate and very caring . I continually received emails on the progress of my claim! They made it very easy !

I discovered that our 7-year-old Golden Retriever had a large liver tumor, which turned out to be a hepatocellular carcinoma. It was removed in surgery, during which she had 2 lobes of her liver and her gallbladder removed, along with the tumor. The first week after surgery was very rough, and we had to take her in for emergency evaluation and treatment a few days after surgery. She responded well to that, and although she was looking much better, her doctors were concerned that her liver tests were remaining higher than they should be after surgery, requiring more testing. After surgery, our dog saw a veterinary oncologist, and he has requested some additional testing, but overall,... Read More

I decided to look into pet health insurance for my dog after a trip to the vet post-snake bite cost me $2,500. I did some shopping around, as there are lots of options out there nowadays. Healthy Paws seemed like a great plan because there weren't as many limitations on coverage. I went with the 80% plan, and boy, am I glad I did. Not but a year later did my dog tear his ACL and needed surgery. It was a no-brainer for me to get him the surgery because I knew Healthy Paws would cover 80% of the $5,000 surgery based on my plan. They were super responsive once I submitted my claim, and the money was deposited into my bank account within one week. Fast forward another year later, my... Read More

Hands down the best coverage you can get for your fur baby! Our poor little frenchie has had two major surgeries in the past 18 months and several other issues with things like allergies and copd. We have submitted A LOT of invoices and statements and have never had an issue with one single item. The only time I’ve received an email in response to his treatment was to say “we’re checking in” and wishing him well. If you’re looking for insurance for your pet, honestly stop your search now and save yourself the time and trouble and signup with healthy paws today!

We had this insurance for two years and never submitted a claim. My dog had an impact injury and her leg when lame. She had to have surgery. First Healthy Paws denied the claim saying it was preventative so I had the vet write a letter. Then I resubmitted and they said they couldn’t read the PDF invoice from the vet. Then I resubmitted and they said it was a pre-existing condition. Two years later??? My vet even confirmed that it wasn’t and they still denied the claim. They are supposed to process claims in 10 days. This was two months of them denying me sending information to refute their reason and them finding a new one. Do not waste your money. They have loads of bad reviews they try... Read More

Angelica - We are never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. We appreciate you providing your pet’s medical records and resending when the copies we received were unreadable. Even with today’s technology, there are still issues with fax quality from time to time. We’ve also been helping an unusually large number of sick pets in the last few weeks which caused the delay in your claim processing. We apologize for that delay and have been proactively implementing solutions so this does not happen in the future. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Since the medical records that were provided to us show the sign/symptoms of the current issue to be pre-existing, we could not cover your claim. I regards to our reviews, our pet parents are passionate about their pets, just like you, which is why we have both positive and negative reviews. We don’t have the ability to manipulate or cover up any review posted by an individual. Our goal is to provide a response based upon the content of the review while adhering to our corporate privacy policy which protects our customers private information. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

My cat got into something in the house while I was away and had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks, and had a stomach tube placed for well over 2 months. If it weren’t for healthy paws, my cat would not be here. The fact that they don’t have a limit played a huge role as well. They paid exactly what they said they were gonna pay, no questions asked. I would not consider any other insurance company.
