Metlife Dental Review

Metlife Dental specializes in providing dental insurance for groups and is currently one of the top providers of dental insurance in the country. Included in their Dental PPO plan is full service coverage for retirees, a big plus when enhancing retirement benefits.

What's included with Metlife Dental?

Negotiated network dental fees are typically 15-45% below community-average charges

More than 400 covered procedures, includes co-pays for services such as implants, veneers, white fillings, IV sedation, general anesthesia and nitrous oxide

Expanded preventative and diagnostic benefits — providing co-pays for procedures such as brush biopsies and additional cleanings when appropriate

Defined fees for materials and procedures requiring multiple services (e.g., root canals, crowns and bridges) – minimizing fee confusion

Fine Print

Savings from enrolling in the MetLife PDP will depend on various factors, including how often participants visit the dentist and the cost for services rendered.

Plan provisions regarding eligibility and late entrants apply.

MetLife VisionAccess is a discount program and not an insured benefit. It is provided through Vision Service Plan (VSP), Rancho Cordova, CA. VSP is not affiliated with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company or its affiliates.

Deductible waived for diagnostic and preventive services for plans 1 and 2. Plan number 2 is not available in Mississippi and Texas.

Groups with no prior dental coverage, or without acceptable evidence of prior dental coverage can only choose plan 3.

Out-of-network benefits are payable for services rendered by a dentist who is not a participating provider. The Reasonable & Customary charge is based on whatever is lowest among (1) the dentist's actual charge, (2) the dentist's usual charge for the same or similar service or (3) the charge of similar dentists in the area for a similar service or services.

Summary

Metlife Dental provides decent savings on group plans and is especially useful for small businesses looking for dental coverage. However, this is subject to the availability of network and participating dentists in the area.

I've got a 15 year old crown that needs replacing. First review says won't cover it as I have deep pockets that require jaw repair, even though it was over 15 years ago that deep pockets were resolved. Second reviewer didn't find the fracture. Third reviewer says only metal crown is covered. WTH, all my crowns and bridges are ceramic over metal. Appears agents get a bonus for claim denials. $660./year for terrible coverage. I will look elsewhere for dental insurance next year!

We have been using MetLife Dental for two years. Every single claim I have submitted for my family has been denied. Every single time they claim that "Cannot identify the MetLife plan participant". It always takes WEEKS of fighting with them and giving them the same information countless times before I get refunded for the cleaning. Often by the time I am refunded for the one cleaning we have another person covered in our family plan who has gone for a cleaning and the fight starts all over again. This last claim I submitted for my daughter and myself for a basic cleaning, was submitted with a hand written note asking them to call me directly if there are any issues with the claim... Under no circumstances should you pay any amount however low for MetLife Dental. Do not pay anything through your employer. They claimed to have sent me letters they never mailed. They don't know to send claims for providers with addresses in Mexico to their International Claims department. They say they don't know your dentist's name when it is box 23 of the claim form. They say they don't know the address when it's in box 24. They basically treat claims like used tissue paper. If they offer you Metlife Dental at work and it costs anything turn it down. If it is 100% employer-paid be sure you save enough to pay your dentist. the only thing they pay is whatever it cost to get this... Read More

Metlife Dental is terrible. They try to scam you from every angle they can. Tips for the easily fooled, DO NOT take their word that In-Network Doctors on their websites are actually In-Network. They deny it later & say its your fault for not calling to confirm. Then DO NOT believe that 100% of preventive care is covered, because it's not... it's the "AVERAGE". They are not a good company. They try and scam you to save a penny. If it wasn't offered through my employer I would not have them. I would prefer to cancel my plan and pay out of pocket, at least I will know what to expect. What a ridiculous company. 8.8 out of 10 is a scam too! Read the rest of these comments. REALLY??

8.8 out of 10 with all these BAD reviews? I paid Metlife Dental for 20 years until I retired. Then I went with Metlife Take Along Dental. I started a dental implant the month before the Take Along Dental started... that included removing the tooth. Guess what, Metlife pulled the "missing tooth" clause to deny the continued implant work. Two times I tried to get someone reasonable and high enough in the company to realize this is just not right. I had continuous coverage with METLIFE for over 20 years and now they will not cover my tooth.

The only reason I went with MetLife in the first place was because it was offered through an employee plan. What a disaster it's been ever since. MetLife is one of the most fraudulent insurance companies I've ever had the displeasure of having to deal with. They constantly found every loophole in the book to deny every large claim I ever made. When I tried to get implants, they denied my claim because they said the extractions had not been done while I was a MetLife customers. It was a lie. Then I was forced to have to prove the extractions were done by the previous dentist who only promised they would provide proof that the extractions were done under MetLife coverage. But they lied too,... Read More

Don't get Met Life, I have had the coverage for over 2 years because it is backed by the Veterans Affairs. I recently had to have a crown which they were to pay half, needless to say they didn't they only paid $220 leaving me with over a $1000. And only paid $3 on cleaning.

They do not pay for much outside of a cleaning. They wont even pay for a fluoride treatment. The worst part is that they bully the costumer for renewal. I called on Dec 2017 to notify MetLife that I was not renewing my policy. I was lecture by the customer service rep who threatened me that if I cancel I could never come back. I cleared told the rep that I wanted to cancel, she acknowledged the policy was cancelled and that I was going to receive a letter confirming the cancellation. On January 2018 I received renewal documents and a bill. I sent the bill back with no payment and a note reminding them that I cancelled my policy on Dec 2017 when the last policy ended. I received... Read More

I am a service connected disabled veteran on fixed income. My wife and I signed up for metlife dental through the VA. We signed up for the best plan they had and were paying $116 a month for 3 years. Apparently the contract between VA and Metlife was in the process of being renewed during which time Metlife started deigning our dental claims they had previously pre approved. When we contacted them for an explanation on why they deigned claims for implant crowns that they paid for three years earlier they responded with a letter from "overpayment collections dept". Metlife left us on the hook for $8000 AND collections for another $2000 they had paid for three years prior. They... Read More
