John Hancock is one of the most recognized names in the financial services industry, with roots going back to 1861. That alone might well be enough to inspire consumer confidence. But the company's travel insurance policies are respectable in their own right, with coverage offered for pretty much every major travel-related problem you're likely to encounter.

In the wake of the global pandemic, travel insurance companies took a lot of criticism for denying COVID-related claims altogether. The industry has responded, however, as the pandemic has raged on and many travel insurers do cover COVID-engendered cancellations and emergency medical expenses. John Hancock now covers 100% of your trip costs if you have to cancel your trip due to COVID illness or travel restrictions. The company also offers $250,000 in coverage for COVID-related medical expenses.

Customers can choose one of three John Hancock plans and add specialty riders as needed to customize their policies. The company offers a simple online quote form that helps customers compare plans and select the one that best reflects their needs.

John Hancock Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 3 / 5

John Hancock offers the full range of coverage options you'd expect from a travel insurance carrier. The company packages three plans—Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each plan includes basically the same type of coverage, but as you step up in price, coverage limits increase. Emergency medical coverage, for example, runs from $50,000 per person per trip to $25,000 and medical evacuation coverage ranges from $250,000 to $1,000,000. Lost baggage coverage ranges from $750 to $2,500 across the company's plans. Regardless of the plan you opt for, 24 hour assistance is standard.

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) and rental car collision coverage are optional riders that can be added to any plan.

John Hancock Travel is not itself rated by the Better Business Bureau, but its parent company, John Hancock Financial Services is A+ rated by that organization. John Hancock Travel earns an average 2.8 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot, but it should be noted that the rating is based on just two reviews.

Travel policies aren't cheap and, not surprisingly, as the number of claims for cancellation and emergency medical expenses illness has increased due to the global pandemic, travel policy premiums have gone up by more than a third over the past year. Your policy costs will vary depending on the type of coverage you choose and the benefit limits of your policy. John Hancock offers three plans to choose from with optional riders available to customize your coverage. By way of example, we used John Hancock Travel's quote tool to find policies for a 10-day trip to France with total trip costs of $10,000. Premiums ranged from $573 for a policy that offered medical benefits up to $50,000 in medical emergency expenses to $693 for a policy that offered up to $250,000 in benefits.

If you actually need to file a claim, be prepared for a lot of paper work and an automatic denial. We were stranded in Madrid because our luggage was stuck in an elevator and we missed our flight. We could not det a flight for two days and stated in a very cheap air BNB apartment. We also had to pay more for the new flight home. If you look at the definition of trip delay, it contemplates a claim exactly like ours. We eventually got refunds for some of the flight changes from the airline. By the time it all settled out, our claim was for $5000 which is slightly more than we paid for the policy. We then received a letter that included the trip delay definition, but concluded in one... My wife and I, Miguel A. Sanchez/Amalia Pose bought an insurance from Hancock, handle by another firm, Seven Corner Inc. Our experience is the worst a nighmare, a real rip off. In our travel (insurance cost us $972.00) back to Miami, from Lisbon airport, our fly in TAP (Portugal Airlines) #223 was cancel and moved to the next day, June 1. TAP told us about the cancellation after waiting several hours in the Lisbon Airport. TAP did not give us a boucher for the expenses, but they provided us with an email about the change and the next day fly. When we send us the data to Hanckok the person who handle our case was very nasty, real aggresive. She want and explanation about why the fly was... Read More
