VPI has turned into Nationwide (is NOT on your side). I wish I had known of alternatives when I started with this company when my 11 yr old toy poodle was a puppy. Contrary to the above description, they don't charge an annual deductible, they charge $50 deductible for every illness. So if you need a vet visit for 2 things, you lose $100 off the top. Their 'reasonable charge' benefit schedule hovers around half of the real life charge. On top of that, they take 10% off of their reasonable charge, giving you even less. Christmas night, my kids found our dog having seizures. We rushed her to the emergency vet and with great care, she is now doing well. We submitted the claim for the emergency visit thinking the pain of the huge emergency vet bill incurred on Christmas day won't be so bad. Of the $1352 submitted, they paid $295. Over her lifetime, I have paid $4648 in premiums, submitted $7264 in claims and have been paid $2696. Save your money, start a savings account for pet care because this is not the way to do it.
This insurance covered my very first dog Lil Lulu. I had excellent coverage. Fast forward to my current dogs... My 9-year old is as healthy as can she can be, no junk treats, no vet visits in 2015--nevertheless, her monthly fee of $50+ was increased to $72 with exclusions! Look at their FB page "Piper and Patches, The Good, The Bad and The Pissy" and tell me if my dogs are sickly. Enough corporate abuse! I'll transfer her health insurance to another pet insurance where they respect her intelligence, good old age and healthy habits. Stand up to corporations!
I cannot STRESS HOW HAPPY I am with the NEW VPI plan which they started offering just six months ago. It literally covers everything! ( except dog food!). I had my three Chinese Cresteds on pet Plan and I have NO IDEA why it is rated so highly. Read the fine print with Pet Plan is all I can say. Then compare with the NEW VPI plan which now has NO LIMITS on major medical and covers wellness with only ONE deductible of 250 per pet per year. Pet Plan is 250 deductible for EACH SEPARATE VISIT if they are not related. Why take my word. Call VPI and ask about the new plan and then compare with the plan you have now. For me, there was no comparison.
Rascal has been insured with VPI/Nationwide for 13 years. Excellent customer service. They pay exactly what is in print on the schedule of benefits. Never ever a problem in all those years - pay promptly. In fact a couple years ago I called to pay my premium and they suggested I drop the wellness coverage because at Rascal's age he would not be getting as many vaccinations, teeth cleaning, etc. They saved me money in the premium. Rascal recently passed away and when I notified them, the pro-rated balance of my annual premium was credited to my credit card within 2 days. I would always use VPI
I have had these people for over 4 or 5 years and they are a bunch of RIP OFFS! Every time I submitted a claim they would say I have exhausted my policy....yet my other claims were denied as well...SERIOUSLY! Then the one time I had to take my cat to the vet emergency I ended up with a $2000 bill so I asked them to submit the claim for me to see if I had a better chance of receiving some reimbursement....and guess what....I did....A LOUSY $50! I cancelled them and am now moving on to a much better company THAT ACTUALLY CARES!
I wish I read these reviews before I signed up my 3 cats. They advertise "an annual deductible" - which is not true - there is a deductible for each and every claim. They also cap the amount they will pay out - which is basically - they not pay out more than you have paid in. I submitted a claim for one of my cats who was in an accident - which was paid out minus the deductible - which is good - but was then told that they will not pay any further claims for her this year. As for the wellness coverage - it's suppose to pay for annual vaccinations and flea prevention - they paid out less than half the cost! I have 3 cats insured with them and I am about to cancel all 3 policies.
I have for the most part been satisfied with the major medical coverage I have had on all 3 of my dogs. Until NOW. VPI/Nationwide has denied coverage on a very large hospital bill for my Boston Terrier Ruby. Asking for more hospital records twice. Which I have had Ventura Medical and Surgical group fax over only to be lost in VPI"s system. Customer service wasn't much help and could not make a lot of sense out of there own records. Very disappointed and I am presenting this issue to my dog and agility club members as many of them have VPI and are watching the out come of this "run around".
Loved this insurance 6 years ago. Now, not so much. If l could give no stars l would have.
Just received my policy renewal from Nationwide, formerly VPI. Premium went up 32% for my 8 yo Boxer who has had almost no claims!!! They had previously declined a fairly large bill for a screening Holter Monitor because I had UPGRADED my policy 362 days before and the Holter was excluded for a year. The upgrade cancelled the prevbious policy and I got screwed. I appealed since she had had VPI since 8 wks old and I got a form letter denial of appeal.
