Just received my policy renewal from Nationwide, formerly VPI. Premium went up 32% for my 8 yo Boxer who has had almost no claims!!! They had previously declined a fairly large bill for a screening Holter Monitor because I had UPGRADED my policy 362 days before and the Holter was excluded for a year. The upgrade cancelled the prevbious policy and I got screwed. I appealed since she had had VPI since 8 wks old and I got a form letter denial of appeal.
I have major medical coverage with $100 annual deductible with %100 payout plan which is the top tier plan they offer for dogs. My dog has been to the vet twice this year and both times the plan failed to pay out. My dog was diagnosed with with coccidia and was given an antibiotic for treatment as well as diagnosed with a unrelated hormonal issue that wasn't the primary issue or causing her to be sick. After I filled the claim not expecting reimbursement for the hormonal issue since my coverage only covers sick/accident care but just expecting reimbursement for the antibiotic and exam. Of the $174 bill VPI payed me $68 for the exam and medicine for the hormonal issue and not anything... Read More
VPI aka Nationwide is HORRIBLE! My dog had diarrhea when he was a puppy and we found out that it was a chicken allergy. Of course after jumping through hoops to get them all the documentation they have denied the $1500 claim. He was vomiting for an unknown cause and then his lung filled up with fluid and he got pneumonia. They said because he has a sensitive stomach anytime he throws up or gets diarrhea or apparently anything, it is a permanent exclusion. They just find whatever loophole they can to NOT reimburse you. What a waste of $45 a month for the last 3 years!
insure your dog the second it comes from the womb in order to avoid use of the "pre existing" condition from these crooks. Our dog needed ear surgery and VPI would not tell us prior to surgery if they would cover, since our policy had no pre existing conditions listed, we went ahead and spent over $3000 only to be declined because our vet put ear drops in her ears several years prior.
I have three cats well now two- I have had VPI now Nationwide for over two years. I have paid thousands of dollars in monthly premiums and never had to use the insurance. In reading these comments seems like a common thread-- They denied my claim for my Cat due to inherited condition.. What they have concluded on there information isn't anywhere on the 22 pages of data from my Vet-- So why even have a diagnosis from a Doctor when they come to their own conclusions. I am befuddled. Since I have had to euthanize by beloved pet--- after their 100.00 deductible i was granted 65.00- Buyer beware---
Just cancelled my policy with VPI. I had policy since my English Bulldog was born. Almost two year with policy and never submitted claim until now for Elongated Soft Palate surgery that Spike needed due to brachycephalic syndrome. Paid $3,812.13 what I got back was only $70.00 $20 was for physical exam and $50 for X-Rays. A friend has pet insurance that his dog has been in and out of vet hospital and gets full reimbursement minus $100 deductible and he showed me proof. Now it's for me to call and ask lots of questions before I sign up.
My first Lab was covered pretty well under VPI. Although the costs went up and coverage went down over the years I had him, I decided to use VPI again with my German Wirehaired. I just got the pup from the kennel and she had a minor ear infection-not even noticed by the dog. I called VPI to commence coverage and decided to ask about the ear infection/coverage because I didn't want to get caught up in the pre-existing bit. After avoiding the question several times, the rep at VPI informed me that the ear infection would be considered pre-existing for the life of the dog. She was 12 weeks old so I said good bye to VPI.and went with another carrier. Never had another ear infection since.
Worst company ever to deal with. No proper response. Have not settles a single claim yet. One time they said its a grooming product. However the shampoo was a prescription shampoo and was due to skin rash she had. I didn't wanted to give anitbiotics to my dog so went with Shampoo. but they never accepted that it was not grooming product. have been with them for about a year and feels like wasted all my money, as they have not covered a single claim. Please dont purchase this insurance its a scam company under the name of nationwide. Remember Nationwide just bought this company.
They denied an emergency surgery for a possible obstruction for preexisting condition. I have worked in healthcare for 20 plus years and have never heard of that. It also took them 2 months to let me know. Absolutely would not recommend.
since being taken over by another company VPI has hit an all time low. Nationwide is NOT on their side. I have been a customer for many years and it's become so bad I am renewing with another pet insurance company. DO NOT PURCHASE A POLICY HERE!
