Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been a life saver for my family. We felt comfortable with the claim process. The whole process could be completed with my phone App. In most cases, it took us less than 2 weeks to get the money cheque. The insurances are reimbursement based, I ended up being reimbursed for more than $1200 with their unlimited lifetime claims.

I have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance from 2016. Athena was adopted from North Shore Animal League and after researching and speaking with others I joined Healthy Paws not knowing how good their service would be. I never used the insurance until 2018 and wanted to cancel a few times because the cost increased from 33 to 38 to 46 dollars. in 2018 Athena had minor issues with her ear and with my 90% plan and 100 dollar yearly deductible most of her cost was covered. I still felt like it was unnecessary cost to pay for insurance since the reimbursement was minor and I had paid way more in the last 3 years than received. 2019: Early in the year it seemed Athena hurt her leg and was limping and... Highly Recommend Our toy poodle suffered a broken jaw which required a dental specialist and an anesthesiologist due a heart condition that put him at a high risk for surgery. Tooth extractions, oral surgery, among other procedures were performed to help his jaw heal correctly which made this incident very costly (approximately $5,000). His heart condition also requires a cardiologist to preform periodic cardiograms at 350.00 each time. With Healthy Paws, I was able to purchase pet insurance with 90% reimbursement excluding consultation fees which has been a blessing for us and our beloved poodle. I can always depend on Healthy Paws for every claim no matter the cost including... Read More

ddesimone56 - Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to write your review. Its people like you who are helping to raise awareness about how important it is to have pet insurance for our furry friends. We believe that no pet parent should ever have to decide between giving their pet the best, and sometimes life-saving medical care possible or not because of the costs. Please give your little poodle another hug from us!

Healthy Paws has been there for my dog since the moment I insured her. She has had one major operation when she ingested half of a ball when she was two years old. Now she is 9 and a half years old and she has been very healthy, until last month. She became extremely ill with a kidney infection. They had to do many tests to narrow down the problem. I thought I we were going to lose her, but the emergency vet saved her. We were extremely lucky. She returned to the vet for a blood test last Thursday. Her kidneys seem to be recovering well. They will be monitoring her for the next few weeks. She has also gained 2 pounds! I am very grateful to Healthy Paws for such fantastic insurance. She may... Read More

It's impossible to predict when one of our pets may get sick or injured which is why having pet insurance is so important. It’s hard to put into words how I am feeling right now and the overwhelming gratitude I have for Healthy Paws. I tried to dictate this review and I can’t because I simply can’t stop crying. You see, my dear 3 year old Black Lab Kobe came very close to death two times due to a rare fungal disease - Valley Fever. In fact he is still very ill but his prognosis has improved thanks to the expert level of care he is receiving and thanks to Healthy Paws. Having a critically ill family member is an emotional roller coaster and a potential financial crisis. If you are even reading this, your dog (or cat) is not just a pet to you, they are your family. Imagine having to make the choice between... Read More

It is very easy to sign up and complete all the necessary paperwork on line which is very important to me. They process claims within the states time period and make it easy for auto deposit into your bank account. They have covered all our medical care as stated in the plan, even congenital conditions. They even reached out to see how our pup was doing after his care. We are so happy to have this insurance to allow us to provide the needed medical care for our puppy. I would suggest you sign up before your dog ages to prevent preexisting conditions from not being covered. So far we are very happy with health paws and would recommend them to all dog owners!!

We have had Healthy Paws for almost three years now and I cannot say enough about how wonderful they are. We have two Siberian Huskies, one of which has Epilepsy. Healthy Paws has covered everything that he has needed including several emergency vet visits, tests, and his very expensive monthly medication. Our youngest Husky was recently bitten by a baby rattlesnake requiring extensive emergency care, treatments and medication. Healthy Paws not only covered everything that they promised in their coverage list, but processed our numerous claims in a very timely manner. They even took the time to send us a personal message checking on our baby and wishing us all well. Their customer... Read More

We are definitely animal lovers as most Healthy Paws employees are pet parents themselves which means we understand just how scary and stressful it can be when one of our furbabies is sick or injured. Luckily having Healthy Paws pet insurance helps to ease most of the stress that comes with the financial aspect of having an ill pet. Please give both of your furbabies another hug from us!
