Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We've had healthy paws insurance for Winston for 4 years, since he was a puppy. Well it really came in handy a couple of weeks ago. At almost midnight on a Saturday night, we realized that Winston was in distress. We arrived at the emergency vet at 1am. The vet started immediate treatment. Winston stayed the night and part of the next day. When I picked him up the bill was shocking. The receptionist offered to handle sending all the necessary medical documents to Healthy Paws for me, I didn't have to do a thing . Within just a couple of days I received payment from Healthy Paws! I couldn't't believe how fast and easy the process was to get reimbursed. Additionally, we received... Read More

My 3 year old pug became lethargic and had a lack of appetite. I immediately took him to my vet for xrays, bloodwork and a barium test. His liver enzymes were off the charts. 24 hours later, I was at the University of Illinois Veterinarian School where he was placed in intensive care for 7 days after having his gall bladder removed. Thank goodness for Healthy Paws Insurance, the estimate of $6,500 was no reason to pause and have to consider putting Hank down at 3yrs old. Within 2wks I had a reimbursement check in my mailbox for $4,900. I pay $175/mo to insure all 3 of my pugs, it's worth every penny.

Evelyn - We are so sorry to hear about your pugs' recent illness and intensive hospitalization. We understand how scary it is when a furbaby is sick or injured. however, having pet insurance can greatly lessen the burden because it gives pet parents the ability to do what is best for their pet, rather than doing only what they can afford. Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your story. Please give all of your pugs more hugs from us!

We've had Healthy Paws insurance for a couple years, but gladly haven't had to use it until now. We were so lucky to have Healthy Paws help us through an unexpected emergency surgery for our cat. They've been courteous, responsive, and even sent a sweet card in the mail. This company goes above and beyond for you and your pets.

My dog has been insured with healthy paws for 9+ years. Over the years all my written, phone, and internet communication with Healthy Paws has exceeded my expectations. They have been not only quick to respond but take their time and answer all my questions. I did not have insurance on my previous dog and not only did I have to deal with her health issues but the regular and emergency vet bills only added to my anxiety when she became ill. Having had that experience I can only say that having my beloved dog insured with Healthy Paws has allowed to focus on my dog's care and not the costs. It has made all the difference.

I've been a customer since 2012 and have since added another pet in 2015. I wish I knew about them 10 years ago as I have another pet insurance that I'm not happy with. My sweet Matilda has had many issues and never once did Healthy Paws reject any medical bills I submitted. I'm most happy to rate Healthy Paws 5 stars, they have been wonderful the past 8 years!

I cannot say enough about how great Healthy Paws is. Our 3-year-old malamute mix suffered a traumatic hyper-extension injury to his left wrist. The repair involved two surgeries, endless medications for pain and sedation, multiple casts and x-rays, and intensive physical therapy over more than 6 months and Healthy Paws has supported us unequivocally, paying every reimbursement promptly and checking in on our dog's progress to make sure we're all doing well. I am so grateful for their help. We could absolutely not have afforded to do this without them and our guy would have probably lost the leg. Healthy Paws is frankly better than any health insurance I or my pets have ever had, and I... Read More

I got Healthy Paws for my puppy the day after I brought him home. The day after the waiting period was over, he got bloat at 3 months old (highly unusual). I definitely did not expect him to get bloat at such a young age (or have any health issues) and had considered waiting to put him on the insurance. Once I got the 6000+ vet bill I was over the moon I had gotten it. My plan was for 80% coverage (different options for this), so I had to pay my $250 deductible, the vet consultation (not covered but this usually is never a lot, $144 out of my $6000 bill), and 20% of the total bill. Very fair in my opinion. It took a few weeks for me to be reimbursed (I’ve heard it’s usually faster but... Read More
