Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our dachshund recently had to had a major back surgery for a slipped disk pushing into his spine, what started out as him not being his usual active self turned into barely being able to walk within a couple days. The vet referred him to have surgery right away, so essentially it was an emergency because he was on his way to Brit paralyzed and needing diapers for ever. Had we not had Healthy Paws pet insurance, he would not have been able to have the surgery. It would have been around 10,000, which is not feasible for us to spent on a pet at this time in our lives. I have had a Healthy Paws policy on each of my three dogs for the past five years. The coverage is above and beyond any other policy I could find, specifically because each individual illness does not become a “preexisting condition” after the first incident or at the end of the policy cycle year. As my dogs are aging now, we are really reaping the benefits of chronic illness coverage as well as emergency care. We have had nothing but great experiences with Healthypaws Pet Insurance. Our French Bulldogs have had a few health issues and whether we had questions about coverage, the claim process or just following up on claim, we have always received a prompt response and the answers we needed. Submitting a claim is quick and easy and the correspondence from the time of the submission, to completion keeps us informed every step of the way. One of our dogs just had surgery and we received an email from Healthypaws inquiring about her recovery and we thought that was so attentive and showed that they truly care! Healthy Paws is the best! They processed both my claims very quickly and kept me updated along the way. When I call they are always happy to answer my questions. They even followed up to ask how my dog was doing after surgery. Very thoughtful.

Fast processing of claim was one thing, the fact that they checked on my furbaby after the fact says so much more about this company and its employees. I have never met an insurance person for people that cares how you are doing, just what you are costing them. But with HealthyPaws I received an email, personalized, asking specifically about my dog. We have had healthy paws insurance for a few years now - first with our rescue dog who passed away very young after a terrible illness and now with our beloved 5-1/2 year old rescue. Both pit mixes, they are/were the gentlest and most loving beings we could imagine. Healthy Paws has been an incredible company for us - beyond what I could ever imagine from an insurance company. They have been awesome! I have had my dog insured for a couple of years before I really needed Healthy Paws. I was almost to the point I felt it was pointless to keep paying premiums and was about to end her plan. Thankfully, I was distracted from ending the insurance plan and my dog had a huge incident that cost over 10k and eventually she got diagnosed with a disease that requires constant treatments and testing to ensure a good quality of life. I am FOREVER grateful I did not end my policy with Healthy Paws! Not all health insurance companies are the same, either for humans or for pets. As a physician I am well aware of what patients and their families go through when they get ill. It is no different for pets. When our two British shorthair cats Bertie and Winston got very ill from an autoimmune problem Healthy Paws immediately asked how they were doing! They showed that they truly cared for our pets and for us. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance deserves the highest rating possible. Our pet, Truman, is a 16 year old Dachshund/Chihuahua/Beagle mix. His health took a dive in January; we have had to take him for many expansive and expensive tests over many months to actually learn what was wrong. He was finally diagnosed with an aggressive Melanoma . He was operated on 2 weeks ago and his prognosis is good; all the cancer was removed and he just has to take (expensive) anti-Melanoma injections over a short time period to keep the cancer at bay.
