Our Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance company with the most incredible customer service support team. Not only do they serve us with top notch insurance coverage but they genuinely care about our pet and check in to see how we are doing. We feel that we are in the best hands and we I highly recommend Healthy Paws to anyone looking for pet insurance.

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for several years now. I had another pet insurance before discovering Healthy Paws. That insurance would pay you what they determined the service cost was, not what you paid. Healthy Paws allows you to pick your deductible and your coverage percentage, which is awesome! Their customer service is out of this world, quickly handled claims (one week!), and they always follow up to see how my pet is doing. This is the best pet insurance out there, make no mistake, I highly recommend Healthy Paws.

Thank you so much for checking on Timber. His energy is back and he is off of his pain medications and as far as he is concerned he is ready to run! We are taking him to th VMSG to have the doctor check him and remove his staples. Hopefully she will say he can return to some activity. We are so grateful for Healthy Paws alleviating most of our financial concerns with regard to his treament and allowing us to concentrate on giving him love and care and not take shortcuts with his medical regimen.

My little frenchie is a bit of a trouble-maker and Healthy Paws has bailed us out many times. More recently, my dog had to get various MRIs, 2 spinal surgeries and the care of a top veterinary hospital. With all the heartache we have endured, the one thing we had going for us was the support of Healthy Paws. I even got an e-mail today from Healthy Paws asking how my little guy is recovering and how he's doing? They are a top notch pet insurance and good people.

I recently had a life and death emergency with my 5 month old puppy. Financially it would have been a hardship for me to pay the cost of this emergency (5 grand). Because I have this insurance I was able to say to the vet, do everything to save her. I’m not sure if I would have been able to pay the cost otherwise. I pay 33 month, for the insurance, very affordable. She was not breathing when we arrived at the vet and was in “critical” condition. I did not expect her to make it. She is home now and back to normal. The claim has been processed and completed in less than 1 week. I will never be without pet insurance again. Thank you HealthyPaws.

Our cat is doing amazingly well. The surgery was a success and the biopsy negative for cancer. He received excellent care from his vet and he is back to being his energetic, crazy self. I didn't realize how much he had slowed down until the mass was discovered and removed. He's like a kitten again. I submitted our vet receipts to Healthy Paws and have already been reimbursed. The claims process went exactly as you stated on your website. All went smoothly and promptly. We hope to never need to use the insurance like that again, but we know it's there just in case.

I decided to get pet insurance after adopting a three-month-old puppy, getting coverage for both my puppy and my ten-year-old dog. I chose Healthy Paws based on recommendations from fellow volunteers at the local shelter. My puppy is now 2 1/2 and has had various bouts of lameness. Three weeks ago, he finally had double TPLO surgery. A week ago, Healthy Paws sent me a note asking how he was doing in recovery, and a day or two later, the reimbursement check came in the mail. My vote? Put Healthy Paws in charge of human health insurance. When was the last time your health insurance company checked up on you after major surgery? They make it easy to make a claim, the coverage... Read More

When we first purchased pet insurance, we prayed we would never have to use it. We realize that this is a business relationship and that we send premiums every month for our insurance on Ozzie and Oscar, but the ease and expediency with which this company responds, the no-hassle reimbursements and coverage, the concern and personal attention they give us is beyond all expectations. The service we have experienced with Healthy Paws is a forgotten courtesy for most companies and takes us back to a time when business was conducted with a smile and honest-to-goodness sincerity. Thank you, everyone at Healthy Paws, for making an otherwise troubling time so much easier to accept.

I don’t normally write reviews but I am so happy with Healthy Paws I felt the need to. I have submitted SO many claims for my dog and Healthy Paws has handled them all just the way they promised. My original reason for getting health insurance was for major events like surgery (which my dog has had to have twice for growth removals), but now that he’s older with more issues his medication is covered as well. His blood work (which he gets twice a year), x-rays, and ultrasound were covered with no issues. They also cover monthly laser treatment for his arthritis. The best part is I never have to worry about if he’s getting the best care because with Healthy Paws I can afford whatever he needs!
