Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

When our dog had an unfortunate serious bout of vomiting/diarrhea, it was nice to know that a good chunk of the vet costs would be picked up by Healthy Paws. It's hard enough when your pet gets sick, so having that little extra peace of mind is all the more important. The claim process was transparent and straightforward, and happily our dog is back to her normal energetic self.

So grateful we chose Healthy Paws to cover our Shih Tzu. We recently found out our 21mo old pup needed major back surgery. Healthy Paws made it so much less stressful knowing we had them backing us. I called before our neurology appointment to find out what I was looking at regarding coverage. Tristan walked me through the whole process making sure I understood the terms and what would be expected of me. Our cat Dimond went to the ER and has been hospitalized for four days due to acute inflammation of several organs and now is doing pretty well. His ALT is still high from his bloodwork recheck so he will be on a liver protectant for a while. This is our first time submitting claims on healthy paws and the whole process was super easy and quick. Thanks for protecting Dimond and I definitely will recommend healthy paws to friends who also have fur family members!

My dog had 2 ACL tears and needed double knee surgery (Bilateral TPLO). Our Vet recommended we go to a specialized surgery hospital given the severity of the disease, which would make the cost much higher, however, we were confident that we have a great insurance company who cares about their pet and parents to support us. We had to wait 3 months to get a consultation with the surgeon and another 2 months to have the surgery. Healthy Paws recently raised the insurance premium for my pet, who has been insured with them for about 12 years, having never made a claim, from $111 dollars a month, to $510 a month, almost a 500% increase. This is horrific, leaving me in the untenable position of either paying over $6000 a year for insurance, cutting the benefits substantially, and the premium still being very high, or going without completely. In the spirit of full disclosure, my pet is 18, but I have been paying premiums for at least 12 years, and never made a claim. I’m so pleased with the service that I received form Heathy Paws insurance and I highly recommend this company. I selected Healthy Paws insurance six years ago when I brought home a new puppy. My choice was based on the plan flexibility of changing the deductible and coverage percentage. Families can pick what they can afford. Keep in mind that it’s very expensive to go to the emergency vet clinic, having some civerage is better than none. Healthy Paws fully explains on their site what is covered. Couldn't be happier! Our 3-year-old dog required major orthopedic surgery. Having pet insurance made a difficult decision easier. Healthy Paws is so user friendly - with the app all you need to do is take a picture of your paid bill. You quickly get confirmation (both via email and within the app) that it has been received and is being processed. Less than a week later we had received a check in the mail, reimbursing us the 80% that our policy covers. Thank you Healthy Paws! You have a customer for life!

Healthy Paws helped us so much when we needed to take our dog to the ER vet for stomach issues. It made our decision so much easier to get our dog the care she needed, even though we were quoted a couple thousand dollars. We use to have another pet insurance that had caps, so we switched to Healthy Paws for the piece of mind. The claim submitting process is super easy and they processed our claim within 2 days. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws for any pet owner!

I have been a customer of this insurance company for almost 10 years. My dog is very healthy and I have submitted a few claims in 10 years. When my dog turned 10 years old they started increasing the premium. When she turned 12 the premium jumped from $80 a month to $290. They just don’t want older animals and you to cancel your policy by increasing the premium. Be aware of this unfair treatment and stay AWAY from this company!
