`Founded in 1853, Aetna is a Connecticut-based managed healthcare company soon to be headquartered in New York City. Aetna sells traditional health insurance plans and related services, such as dental, pharmacy, group life, disability, and long-term care insurance. Aetna maintains a network of over a million healthcare providers and services over 30 million policyholders nationwide.

Aetna Dental Review

Aetna Dental offers a variety of dental insurance options for individuals, families, and groups. It has one of the largest networks of dentists, making it very accessible for everyone.

What's included with aetna Dental?

Network only Plans (DMO)

Dental maintenance organization (DMO) is available at a lower cost than a traditional dental PPO insurance plan.

Primary care dentists (PCD) referrals and preauthorization are only required when specialty care is needed.

No referrals are needed for orthodontia, when covered.

Network Option Plans (PPO)

Offers a PPO plan to those who pay 50% or more of the premium.

It has a PPO II network that is a vendor-based network that adds thousands more PPO dental practice locations nationwide. That can mean greater access to dental services at contracted rates.

Dental Indemnity Plans

No referrals required.

Members can visit any licensed dentist.

Members pay the dentist up front then get reimbursed for eligible services.

Fine Print

Crowns, Inlays, Onlays and Labial Veneers are covered only when needed because of decay or injury and only when the tooth cannot be restored with amalgam or composite filing material.

The total number of cleanings and periodontal maintenance procedures are combined in a 12 month period.

Summary

One major drawback with aetna Dental is that it is only available as a stand alone policy in Arizona, Delaware, Illinois and Pennsylvania. This is highly unattractive for those with exisiting health and life policies.

Even giving Aetna Dental insurance one star is being too generous. Typically greedy insurance company. Contrary to their assertion that they "care," aetna dental does the absolute bare minimum for it's members and will do anything to avoid incurring additional costs.

I have sent 1 hour today on the phone, was transferred 7 times...yes 7 times.. and my issue is still unresolved. I had the policy for 4 years and will absolutely not be a client of this provider going forward. I strongly advise against this team.

Aenta dental insurance has been very disappointing. Aenta has refused to cover ANY implant dental work although our plan clearly covers up to 50% of dental implants. Aetna first denied coverage claiming that there was not enough evidence of the need for implants. When we provided the needed evidence Aetna then asked for history of tooth removal, and when we provided that, it claimed the implant was not medically necessary. Our dental surgeon then wrote Aetna a letter explaining that the implant was medically necessary. Aetna denied the claim nonetheless. A horrible experience with this provider.

Pretty good. Most dental insurance seem similar.
