Travel Guard offers remarkably comprehensive benefits and features through its more expensive policy packages. However, its entry-level policies may not be all that useful for many travelers. While AIG, Travel Guard's parent company, appears to be on a sound financial footing now, its past financial management caused the business to collapse and require a US government bailout in 2008. Still, Travel Guard is on par with many of its competitors, particularly concerning its premium coverage plans.

Travel Guard Insurance Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 4 / 5

Travel Guard offers four levels of travel insurance coverage. Its most expensive and comprehensive policy includes all the standard coverages, plus additional concierge and travel assistance benefits. The company's entry-level plan has higher deductibles, lower coverage limits, a longer pre-existing medical condition exclusion period, and a lengthier baggage delay look-back period. Despite the fact that some of the limits and restrictions on Travel Guard's least-expensive policy could make it seem of lesser value to frequent or long-distance travelers, their comprehensive plan more than makes up for what the former lacks.

Travel Guard Insurance Financial Strength

Financial Strength - 3.8 / 5

Although AIG, Travel Guard's parent company, required a federal bailout to survive the economic crisis of 2007–2008, the company has returned to financial stability and is now free from federal oversight. National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, another AIG subsidiary, underwrites Travel Guard's travel insurance policies. National Union has received good marks from all major financial rating agencies, so consumers should be reasonably confident in the financial strength of the companies behind Travel Guard.

Travel Guard Insurance Price & Reputation

Price & Reputation - 3.8 / 5

Travel Guard has a high rating with the Better Business Bureau but has only a modest number of reviews on the organization's website. It has not been reviewed on TrustPilot.com, yet there are some complaints against the company on various review sites concerning their coverage limitations and demanding claims documentation process. It appears the company's "medical certificate" form requires an examining physician to fill in some 25 different fields in addition to those to be completed by the insured. Naturally, insurers need to verify the medical necessity for canceling a trip, but at some point the paperwork becomes so onerous that the process becomes an impediment to, rather than a facilitator, of honest claims resolution. A number of online reviews of Travel Guard suggest the company may have reached that point.

Travel Guard Insurance Customer Assistance Services

Extra Benefits - 4.3 / 5

Travel Guard customers can initiate a claim online, but processing requires the completion of paper forms which the company says take 7 to 10 business days to arrive by mail. In this regard, Travel Guard lags behind some of its competitors who send claim forms and other documents electronically. The company does have a mobile app, but it appears to be primarily a way for the company to deliver travel information to its insureds, rather than a full-featured app through which claims can be made and processed.

My Church Holy Land Pilgrimage Trip in June of 2024 was canceled on Oct 23, 2023 one month after buying the insurance due to the War in Israel. Travel Guard refused to refund any of the church travelers policy premiums due to a 15 day expiration date clause from time of purchase to cancellation. (I'm out $1,284).

They have terrible follow through. We have filed 2 claims for flight cancellations. Claim processing times exceeded by weeks those guaranteed by the policy. I had to file a complaint with the NH Instance Dept. to get any satisfaction and fair resolution.

This is the worst travel insurance I have ever used. My claim is now almost one year old and I still have not received any compensation. I booked a trip for the 25th of September and a few days later, the local supervisor said I needed to be there by the 22nd. I changed my ticket incurring higher charges. My flight was delayed due to hurricane in Florida and by the time I got another flight, the connecting flight had left. I had to take a taxi to a hotel, stay overnight, buy food and get a flight the next day. While in Costa Rica, I got ill and had to see a doctor. Two days before leaving, a fell and got injured. The flight home was delayed more than 8 hours and I ended up taking a... Read More

Terrible procedures and handling of our claim. Even after providing the requested medical documentation, they continue to request more information from us. Still arguing with them and the claim isn't resolved. Do not use this company!

Terrible travel insurance!! Do not use!! This travel insurance will do anything to convince you that you are perfectly covered in case of any travel related problems, such as missed connection, delayed luggage or any travel inconvenience. The true is that Travel Guide will not pay you anything if any from above mentioned situations actually happen. There is always "a small print" for any piece of "coverage" which basically disqualify you from any payment or cost reimbursement. Just wait for your first claim and you will quickly learn that this company is fraud.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER RELATIONS! This company does everything they can to delay or not pay you. I had a loss in late December, I submitted 28 pages of documentation in February. I was told they had 10-15 business days to process the claim. On the 15th day, they sent me a generic request for more information. I called the phone number and was told the information was in the file I submitted and they would note that in my file. Then, 15 days later I get another generic request for more information. At that point, I asked for specific information regarding their request. Then they would call me while I am going down the road to explain what they needed. I asked that they schedule a time... I had an absolutely terrible experience with AIG Travel Guard. I had to cancel an Italy trip due to a sudden needed surgery. Although they promised a 10-15 day turnaround of my claim, it ended up being 5 months of constant delays, apologies for delays, and requesting both new information and information that had been provided in some instances several times previously. My state's rider required my claim to be decided within 30 days. I filed all required documentation the week of my surgery in October 2022. It was only when I filed complaints with my state's Commissioner of Insurance, Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau in March of 2023 that suddenly my claim was paid in 2... Read More

This company is awful. Have never heard from my adjuster. Received email stating my claim was approved, processed and check printed. Because of this I rebooted this expensive trip and bought another TG policy. 3 days later they changed their mind and want to review further. This Bad Faith and I would never recommend them to anyone. Asked to speak with a manager and was informed they don't have managers. Just another lie.

When Covid-19 hit in early 2020, I had to cancel my trip to South America. I had Travel Guard insurance, and even though border closings and cities closing down to travelers was headline news, Travel Guard required that I provide proof of the closings in South America as well as all the other trip documents linked to the trip. It then took the company 6 months to reimburse me. Recently it denied compensation for Covid-19 that I caught and had to cancel a flight for. They said it was a pre-existing condition even though I was asymptomatic.

Got stuck in London for 10 days, had Travel Guard policy. Filed claim October 25, 2022, supposed to hear back within 10-15 days. Called December 1st, lady said someone was looking at it and I'll hear back shortly. Looked online 12/03 and claim says "closed." I called today 12/05/2022 and they said their system is down and they can't access any claims info. 3 different adjustors have been on the claim since 10/25, I haven't heard a word from anybody and now it's closed? WTF? Scam likely!

Beware when using travel guard. We traveled with another couple on the same river cruise. Our trip was interrupted. We had the same travel guard insurance. The other couple received $2100. We received $500. They have no good explanation and refuse to make good on our claim. Joanne reilly Hockessin de

We bought a policy from AIG when we booked a trip with Travelocity in November 2021. Before canceling or changing my reservation, I called Travelocity and then AIG and couldn’t get any clear info on what is covered with the policy I had lurched at the time of booking ? Neither AIG insurance or Travelocity wanted to help me get basic questions answered. About the “travel insurance policy “. The AIG customer service emailed me 26 page document to read and one would need a lawyer to understand the legal terms in these 26 pages. I under that the claim forms they want filled out, to just to start a claim is ridiculous! They take your money and give you no real “coverage”. I... Read More

Not worth the money we bought it as coverage and had to cancel due to daughters medical issue. booking through the hotel directly would have been easy to cancel. Travel guard now wants a lot of documentation which violates HIPPA laws and is refusing to refund the money. This was added insurance which I paid for to cover this, What a Scam! Check the cancelation policy of the hotel before buying this coverage.

Please do not use this insurance company you will get scammed! I bought a trip package through a third party application, flight was cancelled and couldn't travel. Was not able to get ahold of anyone and when I put in the claim they just denied it and blamed the pandemic, although they had no problem taking my money for a bogus policy. Out quite a bit of money but making sure now I tell as many people as possible, and placing this on as many boards as possible!! Do not use AIG Travel Guard is a waste of money they will not honor the agreement they sell you.

Worthless coverage and consider AIG operating in bad faith...purchased for winter ski vacation which got cancelled due to airlines cancelling all flights due to Winter Storm Uri. Filed a claim on this policy due to Trip Cancellation. Claim was denied. AIG STATED THAT WINTER STORM URI WAS NOT CONSIDERED A BLIZZARD THEREFORE NOT COVERED REASON FOR CANCELLATION.

Same for me. Mounds of paperwork requested for 4-5 months, my doctor’s report which was very hard to get during COVID shut down, and never would they answer the phone. Finally, this week they refused to compensate for the $1200 airline ticket because United did give me a credit. I desperately need the money. I have lupus and of course will not be traveling until COVID is over. Can they do this.

Been waiting 3 months for my refund, all I get is a request for more documents.I have spent over 25.00 in postage sending all the documents I have ,but all I get is “under review”. I have dealt with Allianz in the past and they were honest to deal with ...lesson learned ...

We are very upset that we were not able to receive a refund for insurance we purchased for an April 2020 cruise that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic due to AIG's 15-day cancellation policy. They did give a voucher good for 2-years, but we would have preferred the refund. The cruise line, airline, and hotel all waived their "policy" and refunded our money. We do not understand how AIG can get to keep our money for doing nothing.

I am disappointed that Travel Guard (AIG company) through Expedia's plan did not allow any future credit for paid travel insurance for trips cancelled due to Covid 19. My Tauck tour insurance was credited towards a future trip which is great. I will never use Travel Guard again as they kept everyone's premiums without giving customers any credit for this unprecedented pandemic. My husband (45 yrs experience in the commercial insurance business) said NEVER use an AIG company for insurance.

We purchased AIG/Travel Guard travel insurance through Expedia for our hotel rooms in Vancouver for June 2020. We had to cancel our cruise, flights, and hotel rooms in January because of my immune system and the Covid 19 scare. We received our cruise money back from Holland America, our flight refund from Allianz but are still waiting on AIG/TravelGuard. I don't know where these reviews are coming from, but when I check AIG/Travel Guard on line, they have a 1 1/2 star rating out of five and I can see why. I have send documentation now for over 2 months and when I check to see where my refund is, all I get is "UNDER REVIEW". Please NEVER use AIG/Travel Guard.

We booked a trip to France and leaving Italy for early May. And bought the Travel Guard trip insurance. On February 28th, there was a travel ban issued in Italy. We submitted a claim that day saying we cannot travel there due to Coronavirus outbreak/ travel ban. We received an email yesterday saying that a viral outbreak in the country your flying to is not cause to refund your tickets. Excuse me? Then you travel there. Total waste of money and scam. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Airlines will work with you to reschedule! Shame on you AIG and Travelguard!

Frankly, the travel insurance policy is entirely fraudulent. My flight was cancelled by my airliner, and Travel Guard refused to cover my ~$300 of incurred expenses. They claimed that my expenses were not covered under my plan. My plan was literally called FLIGHT CANCELLATION plan, and Travel Guard said that it did not cover the expenses from my flight being cancelled. With something as unbelievable as this, I will actively go out of my way to ensure that none of my friends, colleagues, acquaintances ever purchase Travel Guard.

I purchased AIG/Travel Guard travel insurance in Dec/2019 for a flight I was taking in late Jan/2020. I had to cancel my trip because of complications arising from my dads death last year. I cancelled my flight and was told there would be a penalty of $200 with the airline but that my flight insurance would cover the cost. I phoned AIG/Travel Guard insurance and they said I would have to file a claim with them. I looked at the claim and they wanted my dads death certificate and social insurance number. Why the heck do they need that stuff? I spoke to a lawyer about this and he stated that I didn't have to give that info to some unknown insurance firm. I called AIG/Travel Guard back, told... Offer a lot of service yet backpedal when a simple claim is made. I wanted to cancel the trip 1.5 months in advance.....wan on the end of the rattled off multiple forms for a mere cancellation. Not helpful and she seemed bothered from the moment she spoke
