Lemonade is a licensed insurance carrier that offers tech-powered renters insurance. Instead of brokers and bureaucracy, Lemonade uses bots and machine learning to create an insurance experience that is instant, affordable, and paperless. As the only Certified B-Corp insurance company, Lemonade is transforming insurance by giving back unclaimed premiums to charities every year rather than profiting when they don’t pay out claims. Lemonade has now sold over 200,000 policies to date.

Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Using a different business model than traditional insurance providers, Lemonade offers affordable renters insurance with a focus on social impact and technology-based tools. The usability of their app and website for originating quotes and claims is lauded by customers, even if it lacks some of the coverage customization options or discounts that major insurance providers might include. Their affordable premiums and the ability to choose a $0 deductible make Lemonade an attractive alternative for basic renters insurance. Nonetheless, because of the company's young history, information from ratings agencies and customer reviews are scarce.

Lemonade Coverage

Coverage Options - 4.5 / 5

Although not as robust as other, larger insurance providers, Lemonade offers coverage for Personal Property, Loss of Use, Personal Liability (up to $500,000), and Medical Payments to Others. Lemonade's base policies cover 16 different perils, including theft, fire, explosion, and vandalism for personal property and loss of use. Their policy also includes liability coverage. They do not cover damage caused by flooding, vicious dog attacks (high-risk breeds or dogs with a history of attacks), or damage to a roommate's property. Earthquake coverage is optional and can be requested as an add-on. We encourage consumers to review coverage options during the quote process to make sure what their policies will and will not cover.

Tamika was my lemonade claims agent. He went above and beyond. We suffered damage to our home due to the Texas winter storm. I’m so glad I decided to get renters insurance with lemonade. They made the claim process super easy. I never encountered an issue with any customer service rep. Tamika always replied to my calls and emails promptly. Their system is a breeze they stayed up to date with all the information I sent in. I was truly blessed to have them as my renters insurance. They made a very stressful time feel like a breeze. The compensated us quickly and did what they said they’d do and more. Lemonade is a life saver. The saying when life gives you lemons make lemonade definitely... Read More

This company sucks and they took almost 3 weeks to pay out my claim and I added on water damage to my policy but they gave an excuse as to why they would not pay out my for my personal stuff...They claim they have fast and speedy service. but that's lie... They are not open on the weekend for emergencies and It took way to many calls to just get update on my claim. Which they didn't even pay out to me, even though I'm the policy holder and am the one paying the insurance every month... You can only file claim through the app, which doesn't always work depending on what kind claim you are filing...

Lemonade Insurance are scammers. My items got missing on a flight as a result of damage in course of the flight. They lied on their website and their policy that my property is covered anywhere but told me after I filed a claim that the insurance doesn't cover damages or losses while a person or organization is paid for moving property. Their response is a scam and fraudulent and doesn't apply in my case as I do not pay for cargo or haulage in this instance but my items only got missing while travelling. My lawyer also advised me that this is not what that policy claims and they want to avoid payment and will be filing damages and compensation for losses suffered against Lemonade... Read More

A water pipe burst in my rental property building causing black mold to grow on my walls. Once this was assessed, builders had to tear down my wall and treat the mold so I was left without an apartment for a month. It also damaged my clothes and shoes. Lemonade said this 'wasn't' covered as the leak didn't 'flood' my apartment. No explanation as to why the mold wasn't covered which I have documentation, images, and a public health department report on. They then also explained they can only cover my clothes with a receipt! Who keeps receipts! I said I would provide images of the damage and can even send the items to prove but wast' covered. There is no phone number. I claimed on Sunday and... Read More
