Overall Rating: 4.2 / 5 (Excellent)

Pets Best provides pet owners with a lot of latitude in selecting the right coverage for their pet and the best plan for their budgets. Its plans are quite comprehensive and comparatively low-cost.

The company offers two benefit limit choices: $5000 or unlimited. We prefer plans that offer the option of unlimited coverage, particularly when adding it doesn't drive costs sky-high. That's the case with Pets Best.

Pets Best has no age restriction; they will cover dogs and cats regardless of how old they are. The company does not exclude cruciate ligament issues so long as they occur after a 6-month waiting period. That's a significant competitive advantage for owners of dogs susceptible to that type of illness. In addition, plans include coverage for accidental dental and some dental illnesses.

Combined with the company's relatively low premiums, that make Pets Best a solid choice for pet parents seeking comprehensive, affordable protection.

Pets Best Coverage

Coverage - 4.3 / 5

Pets Best offers three levels of coverage. The Essentials plan reimburses you for the wide range of veterinary services offered by most pet insurance plans, but excludes exam fees for accidents and illnesses and rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. The company's Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services and its Elite plan includes rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.

Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy for an additional fee.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Pets Best offers two benefit cap options: $5,000 or unlimited. We like to see plans that offer, even at a minimum, significant coverage. One serious accident or illness could result in veterinary bills way in excess of the low benefit limits some other companies offer. $5000 seems a reasonable and cautious amount of insurance to carry if you want to be fully prepared to give your pet all the veterinary care he or she needs.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Pets Best allows you to choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Combined with the opportunity to customize a deductible, that flexibility can make pet insurance more affordable for a wider range of customers.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Pet's Best allows you the flexibility to set your deductible in increments between $50 and $1,000. That's a broader range of options than many plans provide.

Pricing: How much does Pets Best cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Pets Best pricing is quite flexible. The company allows you to choose deductibles ranging from $50 to $1000 and reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, and 90%. There are however, only two choices of benefit limits: an annual cap of $5000 or unlimited benefits.

The company's two higher-priced plans include reimbursement for exam fees resulting from accidents or illnesses, a feature that's not often found in other plans and can wind up saving customers quite a bit in out-of-pocket costs. Overall, Pets Best provide excellent coverage for the money.

Get everything in writing ASAP. I got a policy and then within the first month I told them I need them to get records from my dog's veterinary office's so they can tell me what is my dog's pre-existing illnesses because their brochure does not address my dog specially. Their sarcastic customer service kept referring me to the brochure with a customer service rep by the name of Laura sarcastically told me I need to "gamble". I explained that if they would tell me what they deem pre-existed for my dog while the policy is new I would be able to choose if I want to keep the policy. But if they wait until I file a claim and then tell me the illness is an allege pre-existing illness, had I... Read More

Hi Sean, we understand your frustration. Any illness or injury that begins before your policy is effective, or during your waiting period, will be considered “pre-existing”. Some conditions, like broken legs or kennel cough, heal or are curable and require no further treatment. Once healed or cured, these are not considered pre-existing conditions. We typically request medical records directly from your vet when a claim is filed to determine if a condition is pre-existing or not. We are sorry to see you go and wish you and Money the best.

Used to be an awesome company to work with. Then we received a notice that coverages were going to change, we could either bump our premiums for full coverage, or we would receive a reduction in coverages. We opted to PAY MORE to receive full benefits. NOW??? They only pay about 20%. I recently submitted a $995 claim and was reimbursed $167. We insure 5 animals with them and pay abut $600 a month, and for what? Don't waste your money.

Hi Pryornina, we understand your concern for a more affordable premium. You're correct that your rates can go up each year when your policy renews. We notify you 45-60 days in advance in case you would like to adjust the policy. In order for us to determine the adequate premium we need to maintain our services, we analyze claims data related to pet age, breed, geographic location, and factor in general inflation. We're here to help you in any way we can. 1-877-PetsBest (877-738-7237) Mon-Fri 7AM - &PM. SAT 10AM - 2PM Mountain Time.

These people have given me the run around for months on all my claims. They always find a new reason not to pay. As far as I'm concerned they are running a scam on consumers.

Hi Amy, our records show all claims filed for Montana and Pancho for routine wellness services and illness services for their allergies and his spine condition were processed and reimbursed based on the policy percentage chosen of 80%. We are sorry to see you go and wish you the best.

There are currently 46 complaints with the Better Business Bureau, a 92% negative, yet their given an A+ grade. It's hard to pin point what is going on other than they like to deny claims, take days to response and have a book full of excuses. They appear to be taking advantage of the hard working Americans who pay for "piece of mind" which never comes. If you read the positive reviews, you can tell they are employees or affiliates of employees......just not sure what kind of business their running but it's not what they advertise. This LLC is doing an injustice to the insurance carriers who actually care and the hard working Americans.

Hi Heather, we understand your frustration with the way your claim was processed. As explained in your policy documents, your pet was subject to the industry standard bilateral exclusion. Due to Riggs suffering from a torn knee ligament on the right side, prior to inception of the policy, it automatically excluded the left side. The good news is that the ear infection claims were eligible for reimbursement and the totals were applied towards your chosen annual deductible of $200. We are sorry to see you have cancelled your policy and wish you and Riggs the best.

I am a customer of pet best and in the process of submitting a claim for a dog with surgery for a CCL. As a medical care professional myself I am aware of the waiting periods and the legalese that is used to deny claims.. so fair I have had nothing but problems with this company and am very sorry that I chose this one. Perhaps the end result will turn better but am not hopeful; if it does I will post a comment if it remains what can only be called a cluster F--k I will let you and the department of insurance overbite know. For the time being beware of this company. A senior citizen that has been screwed again. Shame on this company

We have had Pets Best for almost one year, now. We signed our dog up when he was 6, just in case something unexpected came up. We ended up filing 3 claims for 2 different issues - a cyst (that required a biopsy) and a strained leg muscle (that required laser treatment). Since it was the first time filing, the process did take some time. Pets Best had to make sure they were not pre-existing conditions. But in both cases, they came through. We were reimbursed exactly what we were promised (by the policy). We have a $200 deductible and 90% coverage. With the 1 year anniversary coming, I think I will be signing up for the Wellness, as well, since he is due for all of his shots and... Read More

I enrolled with Pets Best in their most expensive plan, and there is no doubt in my mind that this company does not honor what they promise, and they are not worth the money. I will cancel my coverage and place a complaint with the BBB.

I would choose a different company. As many others noted below, this company will come up with any "pre-existing" condition possible to deny your claims. My dog was hurt playing in the backyard and I took him straight to the vet since he was in lots of pain and couldn't put weight on his foot. He had to have treatment and x-rays done and we were sent home with medications for the swelling etc from injury. I sent my claim in, and it was denied citing a pre-existing condition. When is the last time a dog getting injured while playing in the backyard was a pre-existing condition? Definitely spend your money elsewhere with a company that will actually take care of their customers who PAY out... Read More

Hi Morgan, we are sorry to hear you've had a negative experience with Pets Best. Your policy waiting period for an illness did not end until June 30th, 2017. Your claim for date of service June 25th, 2017 could have qualified for coverage had it been proven to be an accident by your vet. Your vet could not determine what was causing the lameness and therefore cannot be coded as an accident. Unfortunately, you are 2 years past the allowed time for an appeal. Please keep in mind your policy will cover new, unrelated issues that come up now that your policy is in effect. Have a good day.

When my 7 year old dog jumped off a high bed in the spare bedroom, she injured herself. The vet said it maybe, note maybe, a sign of disc generation. No x-rays were taken, just a maybe. But because maybe the injury was due to disc generation, Pets Best refused to pay out as maybe she would not have injured herself if there was maybe no disc generation. Of course, maybe there is no disc generation and she just jumped off wrong, but they'd rather go with the, maybe the injury would rather go with the option that saves them from paying out. Of course dogs get more frail as they get older, and will get injured easier, it does not make it any less an injury. So be sure to only insure young... Read More
