Overall Rating: 8.9 / 10 (Excellent)

Petplan ranks highly with us chiefly because of the comprehensiveness of coverage, and flexibility in customizing deductible/reimbursement percentage/benefit limit combinations. In light of this, the customer is afforded a high degree of leeway to mix and match to get the right premiums and coverage options for their situation.

Petplan Coverage

Coverage - 10 / 10

Petplan offers extremely comprehensive coverage in comparison to the other companies we rate. They handle all accidents and new illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, as well as medications, advanced testing, hospital stays, rehabilitative care, and holistic therapies. Also, all non-routine veterinary exam fees are covered in all plans, including at emergency & specialist hospitals. Petplan has the most comprehensive coverage of dental injury and treatment of periodontal disease. Finally, Petplan will cover curable pre-existing conditions after the 365 day exclusionary period following policy inception. The company also covers most bilateral conditions when one side is considered to be pre-existing, which is something many other providers won't do.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 10 / 10

Although Petplan doesn't offer across the board unlimited coverage like Healthy Paws, it does the next best thing by being the company that allows you the most flexibility in choosing and annual benefit limit. Petplan's annual limits can be set at $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000 or unlimited. This can be advantageous if you research the types and costs of conditions your particular breed is susceptible to, and combine it with the cost of treatment considering your area.
Benefit Limit Types

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 10 / 10

Like all the leading pet insurance policies today, Petplan will pay a pre determined percentage of your actual veterinarian bill after you have met your deductible. The percentages available are 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 10 / 10

Compared to other providers, Petplan offers a very flexible deductible schedule as well, allowing customers to choose deductible levels anywhere between $100 - $1,000. If you have the wherewithal to meet a higher end deductible, it is going to translate into lower monthly premiums. Petplan operates on an annual deductible, which is ideal as you will only have to meet the one deductible regardless of incidences.

Pricing: How much does Petplan cost?

Enrollment - 7.5 / 10

Petplan allows enrollment for dogs and cats as young as six weeks. Also, unlike most companies the company does not have an upper age limit so older animals can get covered as well. Claims & Service

Claims and Service - 9 / 10

Petplan is one of the only pet insurance companies to specifically state a claims payout timeframe in its terms and conditions -- 30 days.

To file you must first print out and sign the personalized claim form, and either fax, email, or mail it with the relevant receipts and invoices within 90 days of treatment. Petplan also gives you the flexibility of submitting this information through its app for Android and iPhone. This service provides instant and paperless claims filing at time of discharge from the veterinary hospital.

Petplan also features the "Telehealth" service. This facility provides coverage for telephone consultations for an immediate lifesaving emergency.

I was so happy with Pet Plan, having been with them for 4 years, I introduced my 2 sisters and a neighbor to this organization. I have 2 dogs enrolled, with very minimal, routine claims, nothing life threatening, my premiums, tho higher than other insurance companies, remained the same. Last month, one of my dogs ingested a high dosage of medication, I had to have him hospitalized for 3 days, my claim was for $1600.00 not excessive in this day of medicine. Within week, I received a letter that my premium would be going up 80%!!! Tho the letter stated it was not due to my claims, it was routine due to my dogs age, increased medical treatments... hummmmm, After submitting this review, I... Read More

Petplan is expensive. I paid $65/month for my 10-year-old Pomeranian (I enrolled him at 9 worrying that he would encounter more health issues in his "golden years"), which btw, was more than my car insurance premium. My premium went up to $82 this year, when my Pom turned 10. I filed 3 claims during the 1.5 years I was with Petplan and none got reimbursed. I got 2 out of my 3 claims rejected due to pre-existing conditions, and I never heard back about the last one. In some ways, rejection on the basis of pre-existing conditions is absolutely fair, but at 10 years old (for a dog), I guess everything would be pre-existing conditions so it was my fault for not reading into more detail about... I signed up for Petplan recently, and the process was so simple! Thus far, Petplan is the only plan I've come across that offers 100% reimbursement. Tiered coverage options make it easy to find a plan that works for your budget; I selected the Silver plan and am only paying about $35/mo. for two cats. Petplan ensures peace of mind through the sign up and initial learning processes. They offer a live chat that's always available; I used it while signing up and right after signing up. During the enrollment, I used the live chat feature to ask clarifying questions about the policy. The agent I spoke with was helpful, friendly, and quick to answer any and all questions I have, including... Read More

I have had numerous issues regarding when I have had to move states and also a lot of mix ups with my father's plan, we lived in the same house when he signed up his dog. The plan increases amount whenever they can justify it, for example every time I would move even when I moved back to the same address I was in before. I want to take care of my pet and make sure she is covered but I just feel like pet plan is taking advantage.

i strongly recommend NOT choosing Petplan. After a year of on time payments by us, Petplan denied our claim for what they say is pre-existing condition. Our dog started licking and loosing fur on the bottom of her front feet which after testing is due to allergy to grass. This was not anything treated in the past. DO NOT TRUST PETPLAN

Very annoyed by the billing process and the lack of coverage. They say you have a deductible....however.....the deductible is by disease....not overall....that is not spelled out in the policy.....anything i submitted never got paid. changing plans to another company...feeling ripped off

Don't use petplan. What they don't tell you about the "annual deductible" is it is per illness. So if you bring in your pet for a rash that's a deductible and then you bring them in for an ear infection, that's another deductible. All to start over again the next year. OH and the best part is my rates went up more than 50% the second year.

I've had PetPlan for years, I think around 8 years now and I cannot be happier with their coverage, speed of processing claims and the amounts that they cover and reimburse. They do not split hairs, and I never had a question or a doubt that they were not being fair in their reimbursements. I've had three cats covered through them, out of which one had to be put down due to acute renal failure and it cost in the ER hospital fees in thousands of $ (LA, CA). They paid me back everything, minus the deductible and up to 80% for the ER/specialty care. Then I adopted my second cat, who is still rather young, but he just had a second bout of pancreatitis in his short 5 years of live. He barely... Read More
