Overall Rating: 8.9 / 10 (Excellent)

Petplan ranks highly with us chiefly because of the comprehensiveness of coverage, and flexibility in customizing deductible/reimbursement percentage/benefit limit combinations. In light of this, the customer is afforded a high degree of leeway to mix and match to get the right premiums and coverage options for their situation.

Petplan Coverage

Coverage - 10 / 10

Petplan offers extremely comprehensive coverage in comparison to the other companies we rate. They handle all accidents and new illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, as well as medications, advanced testing and hospital stays. Also, all non-routine veterinary exam fees are covered in all plans, including at emergency & specialist hospitals. Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 10 / 10

Although Petplan doesn't offer across the board unlimited coverage like Healthy Paws, it does the next best thing by being the company that allows you the most flexibility in choosing and annual benefit limit. Petplan's annual limits can be set at $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000 or unlimited. This can be advantageous if you research the types and costs of conditions your particular breed is susceptible to, and combine it with the cost of treatment considering your area.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 10 / 10

Like all the leading pet insurance policies today, Petplan will pay a pre determined percentage of your actual veterinarian bill after you have met your deductible. The percentages available are 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Minimum Percent Reimbursement
70%
Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 10 / 10

Compared to other providers, Petplan offers a very flexible deductible schedule as well, allowing customers to choose deductible levels anywhere between $100 - $1,000. If you have the wherewithal to meet a higher end deductible, it is going to translate into lower monthly premiums. However, Petplan operates a per condition deductible. So you'll have to take into consideration you will be paying the full deductible for each separate condition.

In choosing a pet insurance plan for my miniature dachshund I did a lot of research that took me a long time to do. I had to be certain because we love our little one very much. I found that PetPlan offers the most services at the lowest cost. I'm paying $30 per month where other places want $70 for far less coverage. PetPlan also has a lost pet service that I did utilize one time. My dog was found. PetPlan is not like one of those huge companies where there is no customer service. I have had no trouble with them and in fact they have contacted me when they did not have to. I am very happy with their services.

I adopted a cat 5 months ago and he was completely healthy until last week. He had a problem with his urinary tract. When it was absolutely dire to have him operated on pet plan wouldn't set up pre authorization and I had to put him down. I lost my little buddy forever because an insurance company couldn't provide insurance in an emergency situation. Never deal with these people. They wouldn't even reimburse the cost of euthanization. I'm now left empty hearted and full of resentment towards them. If you value the life of your pet, never obtain this insurance.

Called today to get info and Quotes for 2 puppies I am picking up tomorrow. Rates were OK for having more than one pet. Was quoted for $10,000 per year max. rate and had to ask if they had others. Had spoke with Tom, and was quick with answers, seemed very cold and unhappy to even be at his job. Asked him to email me info quoted and other then gave my email. Of course I never received anything from him. Made to feel like I was bothering him or something. So much for their 24-7 "happy" phone service! After reading some of the reviews here and rate increases too added to cold customer service without their email to follow up info on, I think I will go with a different company!

Started out paying around $30 per month but it has gone up every Jan 1st about $3 per month. We`re now over $40 per month so we are going to start shopping around elsewhere.

I was so happy with Pet Plan, having been with them for 4 years, I introduced my 2 sisters and a neighbor to this organization. I have 2 dogs enrolled, with very minimal, routine claims, nothing life threatening, my premiums, tho higher than other insurance companies, remained the same. Last month, one of my dogs ingested a high dosage of medication, I had to have him hospitalized for 3 days, my claim was for $1600.00 not excessive in this day of medicine. Within week, I received a letter that my premium would be going up 80%!!! Tho the letter stated it was not due to my claims, it was routine due to my dogs age, increased medical treatments... hummmmm, After submitting this review, I... Read More

Petplan is expensive. I paid $65/month for my 10-year-old Pomeranian (I enrolled him at 9 worrying that he would encounter more health issues in his "golden years"), which btw, was more than my car insurance premium. My premium went up to $82 this year, when my Pom turned 10. I filed 3 claims during the 1.5 years I was with Petplan and none got reimbursed. I got 2 out of my 3 claims rejected due to pre-existing conditions, and I never heard back about the last one. In some ways, rejection on the basis of pre-existing conditions is absolutely fair, but at 10 years old (for a dog), I guess everything would be pre-existing conditions so it was my fault for not reading into more detail about... If I could give zero stars I would choose that option. I had this insurance for seven months and the first claim I submitted was for what was most likely a visit to the vet due to a stomach flu. It took them 74 days to process the claim and they denied the claim without notifying me. I had to call them to determine the status of the claim only to be told that the claims department decided my dog's visit was due to a pre-existing condition. A little over six months prior to my claim I had to take my dog to the vet, because of unexplained vomiting. The vet basically gave her something to calm her stomach and the symptoms went away a day later. Apparently because the symptoms were similar... Read More
