Overall Rating: 8.9 / 10 (Excellent)

Petplan ranks highly with us chiefly because of the comprehensiveness of coverage, and flexibility in customizing deductible/reimbursement percentage/benefit limit combinations. In light of this, the customer is afforded a high degree of leeway to mix and match to get the right premiums and coverage options for their situation.

Petplan Coverage

Coverage - 10 / 10

Petplan offers extremely comprehensive coverage in comparison to the other companies we rate. They handle all accidents and new illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, as well as medications, advanced testing, hospital stays, rehabilitative care, and holistic therapies. Also, all non-routine veterinary exam fees are covered in all plans, including at emergency & specialist hospitals. Petplan has the most comprehensive coverage of dental injury and treatment of periodontal disease. Finally, Petplan will cover curable pre-existing conditions after the 365 day exclusionary period following policy inception. The company also covers most bilateral conditions when one side is considered to be pre-existing, which is something many other providers won't do.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 10 / 10

Although Petplan doesn't offer across the board unlimited coverage like Healthy Paws, it does the next best thing by being the company that allows you the most flexibility in choosing and annual benefit limit. Petplan's annual limits can be set at $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000 or unlimited. This can be advantageous if you research the types and costs of conditions your particular breed is susceptible to, and combine it with the cost of treatment considering your area.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 10 / 10

Like all the leading pet insurance policies today, Petplan will pay a pre determined percentage of your actual veterinarian bill after you have met your deductible. The percentages available are 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Minimum Percent Reimbursement
70%
Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 10 / 10

Compared to other providers, Petplan offers a very flexible deductible schedule as well, allowing customers to choose deductible levels anywhere between $100 - $1,000. If you have the wherewithal to meet a higher end deductible, it is going to translate into lower monthly premiums. Petplan operates on an annual deductible, which is ideal as you will only have to meet the one deductible regardless of incidences.

Petplan allows enrollment for dogs and cats as young as six weeks. Also, unlike most companies the company does not have an upper age limit so older animals can get covered as well. Claims & Service

Claims and Service - 9 / 10

Petplan is one of the only pet insurance companies to specifically state a claims payout timeframe in its terms and conditions -- 30 days.

To file you must first print out and sign the personalized claim form, and either fax, email, or mail it with the relevant receipts and invoices within 90 days of treatment. Petplan also gives you the flexibility of submitting this information through its app for Android and iPhone. This service provides instant and paperless claims filing at time of discharge from the veterinary hospital.

Petplan also features the "Telehealth" service. This facility provides coverage for telephone consultations for an immediate lifesaving emergency.

The many positive reviews must be fake. I'm so fed-up with this company I can't even begin to tell my story. Short story, 4 cats, hundreds in premium a month, small claim denied by multiplying single illness into multiples and deducting multiple deductibles, thereby getting out of paying anything. Coldest phone conversation with stooges, never able to speak to adjusters. Over promise and no deliver. You've been warned, do NOT sign up. You're better off putting the money into a secure bank account and paying your own claims when they come up. Trust me, it's cheaper than this scam operation.

PETPLAN are typical ripoff artists. Enrolled my cat 10/14, $24.80 every month (of course ON TIME every month) is deducted from my checking account. Had mouth surgery 12/15 that cost over $1300, but since I also pay $30/month in Banfields (my Vet that I pay) “Wellness” plan, the amount was reduced to $750. After, twice, hearing they needed more notes and info from Banfield (red flag right there) for 2 and a half months, they finally said they refuse to cover it because he had a “preexisting condition” that, obviously, was never revealed to me. Hope your pet gets sick early in the month, because once they pay a few quota claims all the rest are DENIED. Plus the submit fake, positive reviews... Read More

I got PetPlan for a newly adopted dog. The first year I had him, he came down with both Lyme's disease and Anaplasmosis another tick-borne disease. We ran up about $1,500 in bills fighting both. Long story short, PetPlan wants you to have 12 months of tick preventative receipts for your dog. If you haven't had your dog, you will need to dig up a health certificate. Even then they throw continuous roadblocks up to block your getting any reimbursement for your pet's illness. I eventually gave up - I was spending an equal amount of time on the phone that I spent getting my pup better. The cherry on top of the icing was when I did some research on Anaplasmosis and it is transferred from the... Read More

This is the worst pet insurance ever. They denied all of my claims for my dog, even though she is a 4 months old puppy...

Called today to get info and Quotes for 2 puppies I am picking up tomorrow. Rates were OK for having more than one pet. Was quoted for $10,000 per year max. rate and had to ask if they had others. Had spoke with Tom, and was quick with answers, seemed very cold and unhappy to even be at his job. Asked him to email me info quoted and other then gave my email. Of course I never received anything from him. Made to feel like I was bothering him or something. So much for their 24-7 "happy" phone service! After reading some of the reviews here and rate increases too added to cold customer service without their email to follow up info on, I think I will go with a different company!

Started out paying around $30 per month but it has gone up every Jan 1st about $3 per month. We`re now over $40 per month so we are going to start shopping around elsewhere.

I will not purchase Pet Plan for my second cat. Seems every service my first cat has is chalked up to a condition she had as a kitten though they are not clinically related so no coverage. Now wondering if I should cancel the policy as I am wondering if anything will ever be "covered."

We had a broken leg claim which was handled 5 star...however, every year the insurance premium hikes $10. Doesn't matter how wonderful or nice PetPlan is, we must change to a more stable pet insurance carrier.
