Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthypaws is the best pet insurance! There is no comparison. All the other insurances pay for wellness visit/vaccinations and very little or nothing for medications and procedures for illness, disease and injury. Basically your premium payments are paying for wellness visits/ vaccines. What coverage do you get in return? Nothing! Healthypaws pays for 80% of any illness, disease or injury procedure and medications cost!!! And there is no yearly cap on how much they will pay! My dog needed very extensive surgery and hospitalization. Healthypaws reimbursed me within days of recieving the claim! They even contacted me to see how my dog was doing! Great customer service!!! I tell... Read More

We are so grateful that we have Healthy Paws pet insurance to cover our two kittens who had surgery within the same year! We would not have been able to afford their surgeries which both cost about $7,000 each! HP covered 80% of the bill. One kitten broken their ankle growth plate at 6 months old and another kitten just had surgery for blockage in their intestines when they swallowed a piece of fabric. The plan is very affordable when opened as a kitten. We chose Healthy Paws over another provider because they also cover bloodwork which some providers don’t. We appreciate the friendly staff and quick response to our claims. We were refunded very quickly! We are very happy with Healthy Paws!

Healthy Paws is an excellent insurance company that provides reasonable insurance policies and great coverage for our dog Bailey. We have had a policy for our dog since we adopted her (Bailey) in 2016. Unfortunately she has been through 3 surgeries for cancer and HealthyPaws process for filing claims is easy and efficient. HealthyPaws always reaches out after a major procedure and asks how Bailey is recovering. Pricing is reasonable and even as our dog has aged the policy pricing does increase but nothing drastic; always reasonable. I recommend HealthyPaws! Best investment we have made to help us provide for Bailey.

Healthy Paws has been nothing less than incredible. I have a Golden Retriever (who is my world!) and with that breed having a history of health issues, I knew getting insurance from the beginning was the only option to giving her the best life. When researching other insurance providers, I really valued that Healthy Paws did not have an annual limit and I opted in for the 90% coverage plan. My Kali has been in & out of the ER numerous times and Healthy Paws amazes me every time. They have saved me thousands of dollars already and with their help I am able to afford treatment that gives my girl a speedy recovery. As a former ER veterinary nurse, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend Healthy... Read More

I cannot say enough about what an amazing experience I've had overall with Healthy Paws since we got our pup in July 2021. Last week we had a very serious health scare with her, involving trips to two different emergency vets at 5am. She is thankfully okay but her emergency medical care cost us upwards of almost $4,000. Healthy Paws processed our claims within a few days and we were reimbursed by direct deposit a week to the date of the hospital visits. All I can say is, WOW! The claims department even went so far as to email us asking how our dog was doing and wishing her well. In this day and age when good customer service seems harder and harder to come by, I am truly beyond... Read More

Healthy Paws is an excellent insurance for your pet! They have resolved all my dog’s health claims in a timely manner. My dog, Max, recently became very ill with pneumonia and the bills exceeded $15,000 and Healthy Paws paid the claims promptly and completely. Their customer service is excellent and all the representatives are very professional and knowledgeable. I recommend Healthy Paws 100%!

Healthy Paws insurance paid for a much needed dental surgery on my one year old Boston Terrier. He had 26 impacted adult teeth removed that presented with dentigerous cysts- a condition covered by our policy. Thankfully 80% of the costs associated with this life altering procedure were reimbursed and that allowed us to focus on comforting our little guy- not the money. Very grateful for good coverage and expedient claim approval.

signed up for Healthy Paws almost 3.5 yrs ago when. my beloved was just 12-weeks old. Have not used much but last week, it was absolutely necessary for oral surgery. So grateful and the claims process was seamless and allowed me to focus on her recuperation. My payment was deposited within 24-hours. The phone support is also stellar. Thank you!

Have had them for ~7 years now. I did a ton of research beforehand and HealthyPaws were (and still are) the best out there and my vets agree. I still give verbal recommendations anytime anyone needs insurance. They are always quick to process claims, upfront in what is covered (and that's almost everything except Vet Exams) and they follow up after payment to ensure everything is well with you and your pet. It's the little touches like this that make them exceptional. I know it's a business, but it doesn't feel like it's always "just business" with HealthyPaws.

The past year has been a difficult one for my 9-year-old cat, Sam. He spent time at his vet getting tests, in emergency and oncology hospitals, had thyroid cancer treatment, a biopsy of his duodenum, and then emergency abdominal surgery. Needless to say, this has all been a huge expense, and through it all, Healthy Paws has come through with fast, hassle-free reimbursements, enabling us to get Sam the treatment that he needed. If we had not had insurance with Healthy Paws, we would not have been able to afford to get Sam the treatments that he has needed. I highly recommend Healthy Paws, and I'm looking forward to a healthy year with my sweet Sam, knowing that if he needs medical help,... Read More
