Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is ABSOLUTELY the best pet insurance. Healthy Paws has saved us thousands of dollars. We have had the benefit of extending our pets lives. When your pet has a serious illness and you take them to a first class hospital your bill can be enormous. We had a Golden Retriver who ate a stuffed animal and had to have surgery. That bill was $5,000. Than shad to have a splenectomy which was another $6,000. Healthy Paws after a $250 deductible they paid 90% of the bill. We were able to keep Our golden for 16 years. If we didn’t have Healthy Paws we would not have been able to afford it. We have had two other dogs who also needed care and Healthy Paws was there for us again.... Read More

John - We are so sorry to hear about your Goldens major foreign object removal, and splenectomy surgeries. Obstruction surgeries are quite common, usually unexpected, and are always very expensive. Although we are very sorry to hear your dog had to go through such a major surgery, we are so glad that Healthy Paws was able to help with the financial aspect. Thank you so much for the kind words and for sharing your story. We are so happy to hear that you have been so happy with your Healthy Paws coverage over the years. We look forward to protecting your pups for many years to come and please give your furbabies one more big hug from us!

Healthy Paws is an amazing company with incredible customer service! Submitting a claim is as easy as uploading a picture of your vet bill with your phone. Reimbursement checks are received within a couple weeks and they send you an email asking how your pet is doing! This is a business that cares about it's customers. It is such a comfort knowing that my fur babies will always have access to the best available medical care. It's worth every penny!

We never had pet insurance with our other dogs but my wife and I were both working when we had them and after any big vet bill we found the resources to pay them. When we got our rescue beagle about 3 years ago we had both retired so we made certain we purchased pet insurance. After reviewing the companies out there we decided on Healthy Paws and they've been great. They are not expensive and provide a very substantial reimbursement percentage (it can be adjusted to reduce your premium) and their reimbursement turnaround time is fast. Our beagle came down with a very serious kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) and Healthy Paws reimbursed my claims quickly and was very understanding thru a... Read More

I have a 6 year old frenchie whose had several serious health issues since the age of 1. Without healthy paws, I’d be several thousands of dollars in debt trying to treat my baby. My annual deductible is almost always met within one vet visit, and I get reimbursed a majority of what I pay out after that. Their app is easy and quick to use when filing and checking on claims, and reimbursement comes within a reasonable amount of time. I highly recommend this pet insurance company!

I'm with HealthyPaws to protect our 10 months Bernese Mountain Dog, a troublesome puppy that needed care several times in the last few months. That included ER and overnight hospital care. Expensive treatment that HealthyPaws covered quickly and efficiently. Great customer and pet care. Awesome service.

We are so happy that we chose Healthy Paws! When our puppy stopped eating and was acting lethargic we were left with the choice of “wait it out to see if it resolves or take her in to see if it is serious”. Knowing we had Healthy Paws made the decision easy and stress free in a time when we were worried. We were blown away by how quickly they processed our claim! 24 hours from the time I submitted the claim it was fully processed and 24 hours after that the direct deposit of reimbursement was in my bank account. When I submitted the claim I estimated how much we would get back based on Healthy Paws posted policies and it was spot on with the reimbursement. We were super happy that there... Read More

Healthy Paws has far exceeded my expectations. I've never had pet insurance and I researched many companies. I chose a plan that I could afford and it has paid off! I had a very sick dog who contracted pneumonia and had some hefty hospital bills. Healthy Paws reimbursed me for everything according to my policy. The whole process was simple and helped ease the financial burden and stress during a difficult time with our poodle. It's worth the small amount I pay every month!

Last May our beloved 12-year-old Lucky went into the vet after acting strangely for weeks. We received the worst news when she was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma. She required immediate emergency surgery to remove her hemorrhaging spleen and even after that her prognosis was 4 months. Her cancer was coupled with stage 3 kidney disease. We managed her health by cooking her meals twice a day with a dozen supplements added and monitoring her bloodwork monthly. When people would visit they could not believe she was even ill. She made it until her 13th birthday in January before she started showing signs of illness again, so much further than her original prognosis. She was showing serious... Read More
