Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My cat had an ulcer in his right eye due to the lower eyelid rolling up into the cornea. I had to take him to the veterinary ophthalmologist for eye surgery. This was not cheap...it cost more than the cataract surgery I had done on my own eye!! I submitted a copy of the veterinary invoice as well as a copy of my cat's medical history and 2 days later I had a deposit in my bank account for 80% of the cost of the surgery. This was the sole reason I took out a policy with Healthy Paws, to cover extraordinary medical procedures that might crop up. They were wonderful and very responsive, even during this COVID19 crisis. Being a pet parent can bring so much joy into your life, but in the blink of an eye , you can be faced with a medical emergency and the tough and expensive choices you must make to save your pet. Having been in this position, with thousands in veterinary medical debt in the past, we have chosen to insure our dogs. We have had four pets insured by another pet insurance company but this time, I did more research and had more choices. We are so happy we chose Healthy Paws. In the past month, our puppy was faced with two medical emergencies. We submitted our claims, had an immediate response, and processed claims in days, not weeks. Again, we couldn't be happier with our choice to... Read More

mcintoshpk3 - We are so sorry to hear that your puppy recently had a few major medical emergencies. Having a sick or injured pet can be very scary and stressful. Veterinary expenses can add up quickly and without having pet insurance it can be very hard for pet parents to pay for their furbabies medical care. Thank you so much for the kind words regarding your recent claims experience. Please give Teegan a big hug from us!

I have had Healthy Paws Pet insurance for almost 1 year now and I am happier than ever and reassured when it comes to the health coverage of my dog. Can't recall if there are different policies but, I pay about $58 / month for any illnesses or accidents my pup may have. My 14 month old pup began vomiting and within 24 hours he was vomiting blood. I took him to emergency where he got the care he needed. As expected, I paid a HEFTY medical bill. The one thing that I can say TRULY gave me peace of mind, was having coverage through Healthy Paws for emergency cases like what my pup experienced. Submitting a claim with them is super easy, through their user friendly website. They send you a... Read More

My dog Chance came down with an acute case of nercotizing pancreatitis. He was fine one day and then the next extremely lethargic. I had taken him to the vet during the day and they were unable to diagnose the issue based on x-rays and lab results, but thought that he might have ingested a foreign body. After inducing vomiting, the vet recommended he stay overnight for monitoring. About midnight I got a call that he was getting progressively worse and needed immediate surgery and they were only giving him 50/50 odds of survival through the night. They were able to help me find an emergency vet that was able to perform emergency exploratory surgery and found that part of his pancreas... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been AMAZING!! I got the insurance right after I got my puppy because he was putting everything in his mouth. Little did I know, my puppy would be diagnosed with a heart murmur a few months later. Then have to have surgery on his eyelid to remove hair folicules so his ulcer could heal. Healthy Paws has been amazing through everything. I just take a picture of the receipt and submit a claim. Within 1-2 days the claim is complete and they send me a check in the mail. It's that easy. I 100% recommend Healthy Paws!

Our 11 year old English Lab had some serious issues which we later found out was from a bigger than grapefruit sized mass in his abdomen. He was rushed to the emergency vet after having projectile vomiting and not being able to defecate. The entire encounter has taken a month and several visits to the emergency vet ending up in surgery. Healthy Paws responded within a week of submitting the first invoice and we had a check. They also emailed us on several occasions to check on our boy. We have been reimbursed very quickly, usually within a week. They have shown a lot of compassion and understanding on this terrible journey and have been with us every step of the way. I highly recommend... Read More

Beverly- - We are sorry to hear that your English Lab had to go through a major surgery recently and hope his recovery is going well. Having a sick furbaby can be very scary, and stressful. After all, our furbabies are members of our families, and when they hurt, we hurt. Thank you so much for your kind words regarding your customer service and quick reimbursement experience. We do understand that exam fees can be expensive, but by making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates. Please give your baby a big hug from us!
