Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have 2 small breed dogs (Shih Tzu/ Maltese mixed and Biewer Yorkie mixed) and I have enrolled my dogs since 12/05/2014, when they were about 4 and 5 years old. After a very thorough research and analysis of all the pet policies out there, Healthy Paws was the most affordable one with great benefits. I paid about $80-90 for both dogs per month with a 90% reimbursement and $100 deductible per year and there are no caps on claims. It doesn't cover preventative care but enrolling in Healthy Paws Pet Insurance gave me a peace of mind that I will be able to afford medical care for my dogs in case they needed it. My dogs are generally healthy and I didn't have to submit any claims but... Read More

We've been with Healthy Paws since October 2014. In November of 2017, our dog was diagnosed with a partial tear of her ACL. Healthy Paws covered her entire treatment including bi-weekly laser treatments. Unfortunately, the partial tear became a complete tear earlier this year that required surgery. Healthy Paws was with us the entire way, and we are grateful for them. We only paid the original $100 deductible, and HP reimbursed us 90% for all of our costs including the surgery. It's so easy to submit a claim online and they pay FAST which is greatly appreciated. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws for any pet lovers out there looking for insurance to protect their furry loved... Read More

I have a Frenchie-Pug mix, Ariel, who was a rescue, so I knew very little about her medical background. I got a policy through Healthy Paws because I never want to be that person who asks, "can we afford this?" If one of my fur kids isn't well, I will always do whatever it takes to get them better. When the weather started heating up, I noticed Ariel struggling to breathe (which is common in short-nosed breeds) and it broke my heart. I had her evaluated to see if she'd be a candidate for airway surgery; it's something I've always known was an option but in all my years of owning pugs I hadn't had one that seemed to need it. Turns out Ariel had several issues that were causing her... Read More

Rating based on quote and phone calls about options: I post this review to encourage other pet parents to enroll with Healthy Paws BEFORE your baby turns 8 years old, and so parents of older pets don't get their hopes up if they feel as I do about 60%. I was excited to sign up with Healthy Paws given its excellent reputation, but when I submitted information about my cat for a quote, the only reimbursement option offered was 60%, because she is probably* 8 years old. This made me sad, because 60% isn't enough "insurance" for my peace of mind. A phone call confirmed this information BUT also clarified that the 60% (with $750 or $500 deductible) for 8 or older applies only to NEW... Read More

I am so impressed with Healthy Paws! I am just going to copy and paste my original email to them after Bilbo had to have emergency surgery. "Hi Healthy Paws, I am so very, very impressed with your wonderful service - from the start of Bilbo getting sick to quickly settling the claim so I could pay off my credit card immediately. Your caring, thoughtful representatives helped me feel reassured as Bilbo was going through the surgery that the treatment should be covered or at least the claim would be addressed expeditiously. Bilbo is doing much better - he just had his stitches taken out of his tummy yesterday so he can get back into the streams and lakes like the real hiking dog he... Read More

No Costco discount. I just confirmed with Costco that they do not offer a discount and are not aware of any such partnership with Healthy Paws. Just put this here to make others aware . Please update the site. Thanks!

My 4 year old Siberian Husky decided to eat a chew toy last week.. 3 visits to the vet and several X-rays later, it was determined that he needed surgery! The entire incident ending up totaling nearly $7,000! My dog had surgery last week and I have already received my reimbursement(s) from HealthyPaws via direct deposit! Beyond impressive! I had to make several claims due to visiting different vets over a series of days, but the process was beyond simple. I had to upload photos of the invoices that showed what he was treated for and the amount paid, and within days of each claim I received a break down of the reimbursement amount. I also contacted their customer service department via... Read More

I cannot say enough how amazing of a company that healthy paws is and how much stress it took off of us knowing we had insurance. My dog Louie is our family and had make an extremely scary and dire situation that required emergency surgery and having healthy paws made the process a lot easier for us to get through especially knowing our vet bills were going to be so high. The claims process is so easy and fast- we got a response within two days with our EOB. No trucks and no fee schedule. I have had a different pet insurance before and this one is so so much better. I have been and will continue to recommend you to all of my friends and family. Thank you healthy paws!

Thank goodness for Healthy Paws pet insurance! My French bulldog recently had to have surgery to remove a bladder stone and then 3 weeks later had a medical emergency that landed him in the hospital for almost a week. Without pet insurance I would never have been able to pursue such extensive veterinary care for him. The Healthy Paws reimbursement policy is fantastic! What a great company!!! I couldn’t be happier with the service I received.
