Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

Vivint pairs their innovative, self-designed technology for home automation with customizable plans and flexible payment options. Its aim is to provide fully-connected, innovative systems. The company is among the largest home security providers in the US. However, given the complexity of Vivint's systems, equipment costs can mount fairly quickly. Depending on the length of the monitoring contract you choose, monthly monitoring can be on the high side. The Vivint website does advertise a low $19.99 monthly monitoring fee option but it is attached to a high minimum initial purchase and lengthy service agreement.

How does Vivint work?

Equipment - 4.5 / 5

Vivint offers both pre-selected home security packages and fully customizable options. The company offers free professional installation of some system components, but does charge for the installation of outdoor and doorbell cameras.

Hardware options begin with the Smart Hub, to which additional devices are added, such as cameras, smart locks, a smart thermostat, and more. Some—but not all—equipment comes with a lifetime warranty.

Vivint's connected home technology offers a wide variety of optional sensors, such as smoke, glass break, carbon monoxide, and flood, all of which can be controlled via the Vivint app. The company allows customers to customize a feature-rich equipment package.

How much does Vivint cost?

Contract Flexibility - 4.8 / 5

Vivint's Smart Home plans begin with a monthly monitoring fee of $39.99, while their Smart Home Video starts at $44.99. If a homeowner chooses to purchase their equipment upfront (average of $549.99), these are the only fees they'll pay subsequently, with no need for a contract. But self-monitoring is generally not recommended by security experts.

When choosing the financing option, the monthly cost includes the monitoring fees mentioned above, plus the equipment cost over their 42 or 60-month contracts. These contract lengths are lengthier than the industry standard of 24-36.

Vivint Summary

In Conclusion

Vivint Inc. is one of the largest home security companies in North America and currently provides services to over one million customers. The security company is known for “smart home” products and advanced alarm technology.

Unlike most companies that offer restrictive, pre-packaged plans, Vivint focuses on a customized approach. With Vivint’s base security package, customers receive a touchscreen control panel, a smoke detector, a door/window sensor, a motion detector, and a key fob. The key fob can be used to arm or disarm the system without having to enter the home. Additional equipment is also available, including recessed door sensors, glass break detectors, flood/freeze sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, tilt sensors, small appliance controls, doorbell cameras, smart thermostats, panic pendants, and more.

The Vivint Smart Home service packages smart home products across different brands, professional installation and monthly security monitoring. In June 2018, Vivint added two Google Home Minis to each starter kit. At CES, Vivint introduced Streety, a new neighborhood watch app.

Vivint equipment and monitoring are a bit pricey. There are two service plans. The Smart Protect plan is $39.99 per month and gives you 24/7 professional monitoring and full use of the mobile app, including alert notifications. If you add things like door locks, doorbell cams, and thermostats, you'll need the $49.99 per month Smart Home plan, which lets you control home automation devices using the app and Amazon's Alexa voice commands. Again, a service plan is not mandatory, but without one, you have to monitor your home yourself, and you don't get remote access to the system. Regardless of the payment plan you choose, Vivint simplified its three packages down to just two. The Smart Home package gets you home security and home automation only, and the Smart Home Video package adds video surveillance.

Rather than employing a third-party distributor, Vivint designs most of the equipment that’s included in each company package. Also, all devices function using Z-Wave and are wireless (including cameras and smart thermostats), so you don’t have to fumble through a problematic installation.

While Vivint’s systems are tailored to fit your needs, reviewers stated that Vivint struggles with delivering dependable customer service—both for user questions and in emergency situations. On the other hand, Vivint is highly receptive to customer feedback and works hard to implement recommended changes. Sales practices in the past damaged the company’s reputation, but it remains a leader in innovative home protection.

Vivint does a great job with response time and their tech team has been great. Their contract SUCKS, and their equipment is garbage. They have up to date equipment with 1990’s technology. Our cameras worked for about six months after installed. Our indoor, outdoor, and doorbell camera have not worked and no one can figure out why. $70 burned every month. Complete waste of money and crap company. Thank GOD our 5 YEAR CONTRACT is up in October!!!

I don't know who can say with a straight face that they like this company. From the day they installed their system in my home it has been noting but a straight nightmare. They came to my home on a Saturday to install the system which I paid up front the cost for the equipment($636). Sunday afternoon the system started to have problems. I contacted them on Monday morning about the system malfunctioning and the tech over the phone tried several times to reboot the system but it didn't work. I was then put in contact with their scheduling department only to be told that they couldn't send anyone out until the next week. I explained to them that was unacceptable and that my home would be... Read More

I signed up for Vivint Home Security of a Friday evening. I paid right then for the required set up fees. A technician showed up at my house within a half hour to install the system. He installed about half the system, and said he would need to return at a later date to install the rest because it was late, and the rest of the install would take a long time. We agreed on the following Monday. He called me on Monday around lunch time to set up a time to finish. We agreed on 5:30 that afternoon. That was the last time I heard from him. He never showed, never called again. I waited 2 more days before I called to cancel my service. They offered me all kinds of incentives to stay,... Read More

My alarm goes off and I don't even get a phone call making sure everything is ok. In 4 years it has gone off about 10 times and I only got a call once. Vivid came out and replaced the consol and said it was problem but yet it's gone off 3 times and 0 phone calls. The front door lock got water in it after a year and they didn't want to warranty it because of the water. It's a door lock exposed to weather. It's a sealed part and only way water gets in it is if seals fail. Very unhappy with this company!

My panel has been resetting itself over and over again on its own. I called Vivint Tech Support and we went thru the remote reset procedure. They said all was ok. Once off the phone the alarm went off again when I tried to arm my home. I called back and they took me thru the procedure again and made an appointment in two days to send someone out because the battery was swelling inside the panel box. I called back and told them I did not want to wait two days going without an alarm system. I was then told they would text me the name and time for someone to come out the next day. Well this did not happen and I had to call again the next morning. Again they told me they had flagged a... Read More

I have owned a Vivint Smart Home System for about 1 1/2 Years. During that time and especially in the beginning I was never trained on how to use their system control panel, except to be asked to enter my four digit code. The installer asked me if I had any questions, I stated that I had never had such a system, so how could I have questions. The door to door salesman, I found out later, did not comply with the state of Idaho regulations by not giving me a copy of the signed contract. He stated that he could not give me a copy of the contract because his electronic pad could not print. I stated that I had a Samsung Tablet that could quickly hook up to any printer and that I had two... Read More

Stay away from this company! We signed a 42 month contract with them back in 2011. Had the monthly payment of $49.99 automatically taken out of our ban account. We sold our home in June of 2017 and notified Vivint to discontinue the service as of August 2017. They told us we couldn't do that and that we were obligated to pay until February of 2018 unless we paid $180 to have the service transferred to our new home or the new owners took over the service. I went to our bank in August and had them stop the auto payment. I am no longer under contract with them but they argued I am! The new owners were considering taking over the system but they told me that Vivint was very rude to them... Read More

Terrible. Lost more peace of mind with this company than if I had a burglar. Five appointments for an install. First two techs did not have the license to install sensors. I called and supervisor assured me the next one would. Sure enough, he didnt. Tech 4 did. However, after 1 day, the system started going offline and online again all night. The doorbell cam malfunctioned. the set up a tech call the next day. The panel needed updated for it to work properly. It failed at updating. The techs blamed the internet. They said I needed to call the internet company to provide a more secure router. For ten days I had to remain home for the 4 hour install windows. YEAH, --- --- I... Read More
