Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

Vivint pairs their innovative, self-designed technology for home automation with customizable plans and flexible payment options. Its aim is to provide fully-connected, innovative systems. The company is among the largest home security providers in the US. However, given the complexity of Vivint's systems, equipment costs can mount fairly quickly. Depending on the length of the monitoring contract you choose, monthly monitoring can be on the high side. The Vivint website does advertise a low $19.99 monthly monitoring fee option but it is attached to a high minimum initial purchase and lengthy service agreement.

How does Vivint work?

Equipment - 4.5 / 5

Vivint offers both pre-selected home security packages and fully customizable options. The company offers free professional installation of some system components, but does charge for the installation of outdoor and doorbell cameras.

Hardware options begin with the Smart Hub, to which additional devices are added, such as cameras, smart locks, a smart thermostat, and more. Some—but not all—equipment comes with a lifetime warranty.

Vivint's connected home technology offers a wide variety of optional sensors, such as smoke, glass break, carbon monoxide, and flood, all of which can be controlled via the Vivint app. The company allows customers to customize a feature-rich equipment package.

How much does Vivint cost?

Contract Flexibility - 4.8 / 5

Vivint's Smart Home plans begin with a monthly monitoring fee of $39.99, while their Smart Home Video starts at $44.99. If a homeowner chooses to purchase their equipment upfront (average of $549.99), these are the only fees they'll pay subsequently, with no need for a contract. But self-monitoring is generally not recommended by security experts.

When choosing the financing option, the monthly cost includes the monitoring fees mentioned above, plus the equipment cost over their 42 or 60-month contracts. These contract lengths are lengthier than the industry standard of 24-36.

Vivint Summary

In Conclusion

Vivint Inc. is one of the largest home security companies in North America and currently provides services to over one million customers. The security company is known for “smart home” products and advanced alarm technology.

Unlike most companies that offer restrictive, pre-packaged plans, Vivint focuses on a customized approach. With Vivint’s base security package, customers receive a touchscreen control panel, a smoke detector, a door/window sensor, a motion detector, and a key fob. The key fob can be used to arm or disarm the system without having to enter the home. Additional equipment is also available, including recessed door sensors, glass break detectors, flood/freeze sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, tilt sensors, small appliance controls, doorbell cameras, smart thermostats, panic pendants, and more.

The Vivint Smart Home service packages smart home products across different brands, professional installation and monthly security monitoring. In June 2018, Vivint added two Google Home Minis to each starter kit. At CES, Vivint introduced Streety, a new neighborhood watch app.

Vivint equipment and monitoring are a bit pricey. There are two service plans. The Smart Protect plan is $39.99 per month and gives you 24/7 professional monitoring and full use of the mobile app, including alert notifications. If you add things like door locks, doorbell cams, and thermostats, you'll need the $49.99 per month Smart Home plan, which lets you control home automation devices using the app and Amazon's Alexa voice commands. Again, a service plan is not mandatory, but without one, you have to monitor your home yourself, and you don't get remote access to the system. Regardless of the payment plan you choose, Vivint simplified its three packages down to just two. The Smart Home package gets you home security and home automation only, and the Smart Home Video package adds video surveillance.

Rather than employing a third-party distributor, Vivint designs most of the equipment that’s included in each company package. Also, all devices function using Z-Wave and are wireless (including cameras and smart thermostats), so you don’t have to fumble through a problematic installation.

While Vivint’s systems are tailored to fit your needs, reviewers stated that Vivint struggles with delivering dependable customer service—both for user questions and in emergency situations. On the other hand, Vivint is highly receptive to customer feedback and works hard to implement recommended changes. Sales practices in the past damaged the company’s reputation, but it remains a leader in innovative home protection.

This is a wonderful system with awesome support. My first system was ADT. They are the most difficult to deal with and every problem with their system costs you money to get fixed. Vivint is very reliable, only one problem in 3 yrs. it was fixed immediately at no cost. Super system, fantastic people to work with.

I have been trying to cancel my account for 2 months. $120 dollars, several phone calls and a mental breakdown later I am still paying. You need to call then send a document then call again so on and so forth. Customer service designed to squeeze the life out of you. Go with a company that understands the modern customer and how to give them a amazing experience.

We just purchased alarm system and camera surveillance and we love it. The technician was very knowledgeable and we have a large home and separate guest house that he had to connect. We love the door lock and code system to get in front door. It is so easy. I love the camera system and can see what is going on around the grounds and entrances from my phone which is a smart phone and my husbands which is an iPhone. We highly recommend.

Vivint salesperson came to our neighborhood in Queens and noticed I have Slomins Shield. He bugged me and bugged me so I decided to talk to him about replacing my system. He sure made it sound real good, you know free installation, state of the art the most advance system blah, blah, blah. Anyway I went with them and after I had signed the contract I found out they were not going to put NEW anything in! They just used the same sensors and everything else that was already there, which belonged to Slomins. The only thing they put in that belonged to them was the main board.Soon I started having problems. The old sensors needed replaced and I got to pay for that and the service call.... Read More

Vivint has great salesmen on the floor! They obviously train their people correctly. I'm starting to see what their catch is! They go from home to home NOT ALL of them; just the ones that already have an alarm system in place such as ADT! They tell you all the great things about their up to date system but what they leave out is that they use your old system's sensors and NEVER update them with new ones! We started having HUGE problems with our sensors going out and they tried to charge us for new ones! BULLSHIT! ADT was the best hands down! Stay away from VIVINT if you value your home's safety.

Two young guys stopped by and were really sly in their approach as I was working outside. My wife and I had been talking about a system so the timing was right. They spent the better part of the afternoon at the house and were nice enough guys, telling us all of the things this great system would do. All this could be installed immediately as the installers were in the area. Some of the equipment promised were smoke detectors and and outside camera. Well surprise surprise they didn't have any outside cameras and nobody Texas certified to install smoke detectors. After numerous calls, several skipped appointments with no call, and one where the tech said he came to the door (he wasn't... Read More

This review is not of about the quality of the Vivint system but about their deplorable sales practices. A door-to-door sales rep. visited my 87-year old mother-in-law who at the time was in the early stages of dementia. He talked her into signing a 5-year contract for an alarm system that she did not understand how to use. We tried last week to have the system removed because her condition has deteriorated to the point that she requires nursing home care. We had no idea there was a long term contract until we called to have the system removed. Vivint says they will let us out of the contract if we can provide written documentation that my mother-in-law has been admitted to a nursing... Read More

We have had Vivint for just about a year. They proclaim to be "leaders in home innovation", we have not found this to be true in our case. They showed up almost immediately to install the system, and then tried to charge us more than what the original offer was. They also told us we could get functionality that in fact, we found we could not get after signing a long term contract. We started having problems almost immediately with the back up battery not working correctly (turned out to be a loose wire from when the tech installed it). The system was also not "sensing" all of the exterior doors so we would not be able to activate the system until we went and opened and closed the... Read More

My family purchased our home in 2010. We immediately looked into getting a home alarm system and Vivint seemed to have everything we were looking for. We signed a 4 year contract (mandatory) and regretted it immediately! The equipment worked less then it was broken, installers were shady, unprofessional, untrained young men, customer service was atrocious and the price was a joke after comparing to comparable companies! We signed with them rather then others because we really liked the doorbell with camera option.... After they came to our home they pointed out immediately that we had to have an existing doorbell to get that feature. After getting a quote of $1000 to have one installed... Read More

My wife and I got vivint when we first moved into our home. They seemed to get good reviews, after all of this though, this company is HORRIBLE! Just plain HORRIBLE! A sensor was installed wrong on our garage door resulting in the need to keep our garage door bypassed for a few weeks. If a sensor goes bad, you can either get a technician to come out and install a new one in 14+ days or wait 5+ days for them to mail you one. Well we have had a few of their sensors go bad on us, resulting in us having a door or window bypassed (that is the alarm is no activitly watching that door or window) so someone could have broken into our home without anyone knowing. Last sensor, they mailed us the... Read More
