Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

Vivint pairs their innovative, self-designed technology for home automation with customizable plans and flexible payment options. Its aim is to provide fully-connected, innovative systems. The company is among the largest home security providers in the US. However, given the complexity of Vivint's systems, equipment costs can mount fairly quickly. Depending on the length of the monitoring contract you choose, monthly monitoring can be on the high side. The Vivint website does advertise a low $19.99 monthly monitoring fee option but it is attached to a high minimum initial purchase and lengthy service agreement.

How does Vivint work?

Equipment - 4.5 / 5

Vivint offers both pre-selected home security packages and fully customizable options. The company offers free professional installation of some system components, but does charge for the installation of outdoor and doorbell cameras.

Hardware options begin with the Smart Hub, to which additional devices are added, such as cameras, smart locks, a smart thermostat, and more. Some—but not all—equipment comes with a lifetime warranty.

Vivint's connected home technology offers a wide variety of optional sensors, such as smoke, glass break, carbon monoxide, and flood, all of which can be controlled via the Vivint app. The company allows customers to customize a feature-rich equipment package.

How much does Vivint cost?

Contract Flexibility - 4.8 / 5

Vivint's Smart Home plans begin with a monthly monitoring fee of $39.99, while their Smart Home Video starts at $44.99. If a homeowner chooses to purchase their equipment upfront (average of $549.99), these are the only fees they'll pay subsequently, with no need for a contract. But self-monitoring is generally not recommended by security experts.

When choosing the financing option, the monthly cost includes the monitoring fees mentioned above, plus the equipment cost over their 42 or 60-month contracts. These contract lengths are lengthier than the industry standard of 24-36.

Vivint Summary

In Conclusion

Vivint Inc. is one of the largest home security companies in North America and currently provides services to over one million customers. The security company is known for “smart home” products and advanced alarm technology.

Unlike most companies that offer restrictive, pre-packaged plans, Vivint focuses on a customized approach. With Vivint’s base security package, customers receive a touchscreen control panel, a smoke detector, a door/window sensor, a motion detector, and a key fob. The key fob can be used to arm or disarm the system without having to enter the home. Additional equipment is also available, including recessed door sensors, glass break detectors, flood/freeze sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, tilt sensors, small appliance controls, doorbell cameras, smart thermostats, panic pendants, and more.

The Vivint Smart Home service packages smart home products across different brands, professional installation and monthly security monitoring. In June 2018, Vivint added two Google Home Minis to each starter kit. At CES, Vivint introduced Streety, a new neighborhood watch app.

Vivint equipment and monitoring are a bit pricey. There are two service plans. The Smart Protect plan is $39.99 per month and gives you 24/7 professional monitoring and full use of the mobile app, including alert notifications. If you add things like door locks, doorbell cams, and thermostats, you'll need the $49.99 per month Smart Home plan, which lets you control home automation devices using the app and Amazon's Alexa voice commands. Again, a service plan is not mandatory, but without one, you have to monitor your home yourself, and you don't get remote access to the system. Regardless of the payment plan you choose, Vivint simplified its three packages down to just two. The Smart Home package gets you home security and home automation only, and the Smart Home Video package adds video surveillance.

Rather than employing a third-party distributor, Vivint designs most of the equipment that’s included in each company package. Also, all devices function using Z-Wave and are wireless (including cameras and smart thermostats), so you don’t have to fumble through a problematic installation.

While Vivint’s systems are tailored to fit your needs, reviewers stated that Vivint struggles with delivering dependable customer service—both for user questions and in emergency situations. On the other hand, Vivint is highly receptive to customer feedback and works hard to implement recommended changes. Sales practices in the past damaged the company’s reputation, but it remains a leader in innovative home protection.

There concept and idea is good, but their support staff is horrific. They read from a script when you call in for assistance and ask the same questions as they pass you on to a technician that supposedly knows more than they do. My system had to be reinstalled more than once because their software was outdated due to my earlier installation date. The final straw for me was when my home was left unprotected for over 10 hours because it never connected to the monitoring company and I nor my alternate person was never contacted the entire day. This meant that my house could have been burglarized and I nor the police would have been none the wiser. Needless to say I cancelled my contract... Read More

After 6 years of service they will not give a 2 year contract without having to negotiate the second year. No flexibility whatsoever. I'm looking for an alternative service.

Vivint, where do I begin… DO NOT SIGN with this company!!! The sales rep, Joseph, was soliciting and aggressively pushy. He showed up to our house at 7 PM and told us that our bill would be the same as our previous company and that if we signed up with them today, that Vivint would pay for my cancellation of my previous security system contract. Of course, I signed on because who wouldn’t want new and advanced toys for the same price and because I signed up that day, he promised me $100 discount on the first months bill? The installers didn’t show up till 10 PM. One guy wasn’t able to install everything fast enough so, he had to call out three other techs. The guys showed up at 12 AM and... Read More

Salesmen are summer employees who lie about what you're getting and then disappear back to college out of state. You won't get all of the devices you're promised and you have no recourse. Price looks good until you realize there's no way out of the contract when nothing works. You owe them money even when their products don't work, and the buy out is just as expensive as keeping the broken junk. Customer service line keeps you on seriously long waits and then hangs up on you. Don't expect any real help either, just , "yes" "uh hun" "sorry", but no solutions, no refunds, and no next level manager to speak with. Devices are all completely unreliable and work traumatically at best.... Read More

Vivint has a good offering and I signed up for a 5 year deal, however they are not equipped to support their systems. Strike one: I signed up for 5 years because along with their security system, I was also told that they would be installing solar panels for free in our area the next year. That of course was just a complete lie. In the meantime we have had numerous problems that they have no clue how to solve. It ranged from just plain ignorance to supplying a thermostat "expert" who told me he knew nothing about thermostats. I could go on for another 20 lines but I won't bore you. They have potential, but need to become far more professional to deserve the 69.95 I pay a month.

I hate this company! I was tricked into a five year contract by a salesman that was hired for the summer and now gone and cannot be contacted. He told me to go ahead and say yes when ask on the phone to confirm his sales pitch to a 60 month contract, which I had negotiated a 3 year, and he would have it corrected when he got back into the office. Immediately I began calling customer service about what had happened, but they would not correct this. The equipment is cheaply made and never seems to be working when I have needed it too. I have had two thefts and the cameras never picked up anything. I am not happy with this company and its service. I am stuck in a contract with... Read More

My wife and I had protection 1 and we're having issues due to a lack of communication on their part. We got excited when the vivint sales rep came to our porch. They offered more and newer goodies for the same price so we decided to switch systems. Protection 1 had hidden fees for cancellation but the vivint techs paid the cancellation fee for us. Then the storms came and our house was struck by lightning, and our panel took the brunt and didn't communicate with the rest of the system. I contacted costumer service and set up for a tech to come out and fix it for the following Thursday. Then I received a phone call from a technician saying that he could be there later that night. I work... Read More

Vivent is very helpful in the beginning, almost pushing you to install their system and telling you if you don't like it they will happily remove it, no questions asked. We were really concerned about the system being what we wanted since you are locked into a 3.5 year contract so we asked specifically about the removal and reinstatement of the old system. No problem, they said. Our home is 2 story, no problem they said, we will put a panel upstairs and you can always use your cell phone. What they don't tell you is the secondary panel is silent with no lights. You can't tell if the system is armed or not and you can't hear the doors open/close because the chime if from the...
