Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

Vivint pairs their innovative, self-designed technology for home automation with customizable plans and flexible payment options. Its aim is to provide fully-connected, innovative systems. The company is among the largest home security providers in the US. However, given the complexity of Vivint's systems, equipment costs can mount fairly quickly. Depending on the length of the monitoring contract you choose, monthly monitoring can be on the high side. The Vivint website does advertise a low $19.99 monthly monitoring fee option but it is attached to a high minimum initial purchase and lengthy service agreement.

How does Vivint work?

Equipment - 4.5 / 5

Vivint offers both pre-selected home security packages and fully customizable options. The company offers free professional installation of some system components, but does charge for the installation of outdoor and doorbell cameras. Hardware options begin with the Smart Hub, to which additional devices are added, such as cameras, smart locks, a smart thermostat, and more. Some—but not all—equipment comes with a lifetime warranty. Vivint's connected home technology offers a wide variety of optional sensors, such as smoke, glass break, carbon monoxide, and flood, all of which can be controlled via the Vivint app. The company allows customers to customize a feature-rich equipment package.

How much does Vivint cost?

Contract Flexibility - 4.8 / 5

Vivint's Smart Home plans begin with a monthly monitoring fee of $39.99, while their Smart Home Video starts at $44.99. If a homeowner chooses to purchase their equipment upfront (average of $549.99), these are the only fees they'll pay subsequently, with no need for a contract. But self-monitoring is generally not recommended by security experts. When choosing the financing option, the monthly cost includes the monitoring fees mentioned above, plus the equipment cost over their 42 or 60-month contracts. These contract lengths are lengthier than the industry standard of 24-36.

Vivint Summary

In Conclusion

Vivint Inc. is one of the largest home security companies in North America and currently provides services to over one million customers. The security company is known for “smart home” products and advanced alarm technology.

Unlike most companies that offer restrictive, pre-packaged plans, Vivint focuses on a customized approach. With Vivint’s base security package, customers receive a touchscreen control panel, a smoke detector, a door/window sensor, a motion detector, and a key fob. The key fob can be used to arm or disarm the system without having to enter the home. Additional equipment is also available, including recessed door sensors, glass break detectors, flood/freeze sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, tilt sensors, small appliance controls, doorbell cameras, smart thermostats, panic pendants, and more.

The Vivint Smart Home service packages smart home products across different brands, professional installation and monthly security monitoring. In June 2018, Vivint added two Google Home Minis to each starter kit. At CES, Vivint introduced Streety, a new neighborhood watch app.

Vivint equipment and monitoring are a bit pricey. There are two service plans. The Smart Protect plan is $39.99 per month and gives you 24/7 professional monitoring and full use of the mobile app, including alert notifications. If you add things like door locks, doorbell cams, and thermostats, you'll need the $49.99 per month Smart Home plan, which lets you control home automation devices using the app and Amazon's Alexa voice commands. Again, a service plan is not mandatory, but without one, you have to monitor your home yourself, and you don't get remote access to the system. Regardless of the payment plan you choose, Vivint simplified its three packages down to just two. The Smart Home package gets you home security and home automation only, and the Smart Home Video package adds video surveillance.

Rather than employing a third-party distributor, Vivint designs most of the equipment that’s included in each company package. Also, all devices function using Z-Wave and are wireless (including cameras and smart thermostats), so you don’t have to fumble through a problematic installation.

While Vivint’s systems are tailored to fit your needs, reviewers stated that Vivint struggles with delivering dependable customer service—both for user questions and in emergency situations. On the other hand, Vivint is highly receptive to customer feedback and works hard to implement recommended changes. Sales practices in the past damaged the company’s reputation, but it remains a leader in innovative home protection.

I have been very pleased with Vivint. Equipment works great and if I do have an issue just call and it is usually resolved very quickly. Video footage is very clear from their cameras. Pricey but worth it. You get what you pay for.

Vivint is an absolute nightmare!!! They tied us into a 5 year contract to begin with and in the last 5 years the equipment has become completely useless. The cameras don't record activity, the door bell doesn't even ring until the person has already left... The alarm will sound even when the system is disarmed,,, I don't believe the system is even being monitored anymore, even though we are paying more than 30.00 a month for monitoring.. This company is a joke,,, when you call for service, you better be prepared to spend 2 hours on the phone because you are now working for Vivint, they apparently don't have service technicians that actually come out to your house and fix your... Vivint us an absolute nightmare to work with. In 5 years we had already 3 new panels because they didn’t operate well. Thermostat was not connecting well so I had to purchase different ones. Any time you call for service you will be on the phone with them for 2 hours! Worst customer service ever!!! I finally gave up with them.

THIS COMPANY IS A SHAM! Sorry to yell but it’s true. They look pretty but underneath it is all garbage. For example, my dog triggered a false alarm due to a faulty motion sensor. The person from monitoring services who called me could not speak English or even tell me whether the alarm was still going off. At first he seemed to say it wasn’t but then later said it was indeed still going off. I begged him to turn it off so my dog wouldn’t die of a heart attack. He said that was impossible. He refused to let me speak to anyone else. I had to hang up and redial to speak to someone else, while speeding home on the highway. My dog was shivering in a corner when I got there. For months, I’ve... Read More

So I used to be a very happy Vivint Customer. But no more. Had no troubles with the equipment that a lot of reviewers are saying they are having, my trouble comes with the reduction in access to my system. I used to be able to connect to my home and look at the cameras via the web. This was benefictial as there are times all I have access to is a hard line internet connection, no wifi or cell service. In the name of convience Vivint has decided that they no longer need to provide this access and now the only thing you can access online is billing and contract documents. The customer service "expert" made many mistakes when I was doing the online chat making the message hard to... Read More

Vivint is not a bad company, but I've had some unpleasant experiences with them, and now I am trying to untangle my 5 year contract (I began in 2017) and it has been very expensive! It is my fault that I allowed myself to be talked into signing a 5 year contract. You no longer need to commit to a contract of that length because there are so many better options out there. I have had numerous malfunctions and it is not always pleasant solving them. When the system is working as it should; it is good. However, you want reliability in your system when you are counting on it for your security. I am spending well over $1,000 just to get out of my contract!

If you live in a rural area you can forget Vivint for service. If they cannot fix it remotely then forget about a service person. I spent over 2-1/2 hours today cancelling my account after having it for over 5 years in rural Colorado. They could not send a service person here to resolve an issue they could not resolve remotely. I used Vivint for many years in Texas but it was not rural. It is sad to see a company get to the point that they forget how to service their customers and are only interested in collecting your money

Stay away from Vivint. I did not realize the length of their contract and to move they charge you 500 to move the system. Big rip off !! The equipment is faulty as well. Other security companies do not charge you to move the system.. will switch to ADT

I ordered the special on the 4th of July this year. I got told someone would contact us with an install date. Four days later still no word so I called them and when I did I was told it was the 18th of july. One week prior to the install they canceled it and I was told that because something was added to my order that changed the install date however NOTHING was added! At this time they gave me a new install date of the 25th of july and promised $10 off service for the next 6 months. Well here we are today the 24th of july and guess what they cancelled again and now they are telling me that the first available will the 15th of August. They had no issues taking my deposit but the... Read More

DO NOT BUY VIVINT. Their equipment does not work without a monitoring service, so paying "up front" to avoid a long-term contact gets you nothing, and if you discontinue the monthly fees, you have nothing more than decorative wall hangings. It took four days to get through to their 'customer loyalty' group to discuss terminating my service--only to be told the only way to cancel was IN WRITING.

How in the world this company is listed as number three is beyond me. The equipment constantly fails. I cannot count the number of times I have called for assistance to resolve some issue with the equipment. The system would constantly disconnect from the WIFI and non of the techs could determine why. I called one time and was told that I have never been connected to the people that would monitor the alerts. The bell for the doorbell was within the panel and when someone push the doorbell sometimes it would ring and sometimes it wouldn't. It was the worst decision I ever made to sign up with Vivint.

I have been a loyal Vivint customer for over 15 years now, but Vivint is no longer what it used to be when I signed on. I have had issues with a sensor for several months now. DH is out of town for the next 10 days. The soonest someone can come out to fix it is 4 days from today. I have an MRI scheduled for that day. Their next available is 11 days out. So I will have an unsecured window for the next 11 days while I am alone. This is their way of handling an emergency. I'm looking for another system.

Equipment malfunctions almost daily. Constantly shows a door to be open when it isn't. Won't set alarm if it thinks a door is open. We even couldn't leave our house without disassembling the who wall unit. Virtually a prisoner in our home.

The process from day one has been a nightmare. We signed up and within 2 minutes they came to install, we were walking out to the door to go to dinner (6pm) for my bday, then they didn’t leave til 11pm. Everything seemed to work great for a couple months. Now it’s just non stop problem, constantly goes off-line, house gets egged on the window right next to the door bell camera and doesn’t pick it up, but my neighbors camera recorded the entire thing, they were right there by the camera. Then someone took something off my front porch, what do you know the camera never picked that up either. Panel has been replaced 3 different times, can’t figure out why it keeps going off line. When their... Read More

Purchased your system in July 2017. Have had nothing but problems since day 1. Have had technicians, spend countless hours swapping doorbells twice and panels twice. Various problems still persist and I find myself calling customer service. Each time I called I am told that my software needs updating or asked me to perform a hard reset of system. When that doesn't work I had an appointment for a tech to come out to my home on June 20th between 10-12. He was a no-show but when I called customer service to what the problem was, I was told that he came by my house at 10:15 am, rang the doorbell (which was not working and he came to repair), was told he knocked on the door that I was sitting... The biggest bunch of crooks I’ve ever dealt with. Salesman was high pressure and a liar. Installation crew were inexperienced and unprofessional, left my house full of holes from drilling in the wrong spots. After three weeks I told them to come and take the system out since they gave me 30 days to do so. They then wanted $645 for equipment use and restocking. I told them to come and get their crap out of my house and I changed my credit card so they couldn’t charge anything more. Needless to say, they came and ripped their so-called equipment out of my house and left a real mess. AND to think they call themselves a security company!! I wouldn't trust Vinint to collect my garbage! They proved themselves to be untrustworthy and extremely expensive. Comparing apples to apples, Vinvint is 100% higher than Safe Touch, the company I did hire. Furthermore, after three frustrating days of lies and BS, they pulled my credit report with a hard pull, told me the WRONG information about what was on my credit report, cost me money to get full bureau reports to discover they were lying and then, REFUSED to remove the hard pull after turning me down for all the wrong reasons. My credit score is now over 750 on all three bureaus, no thanks to the harmful act of Vinvint's hard pull. Again, what they were going to charge me $1985... Read More

We have had Vivint for close to three years now. The customer service sucks. When we signed up we were told we would be able to move our unit for free. We were also told we would be able to keep the equipment in the current home (in hopes that who it was left for would sign up with them) and they would give new equipment when we moved. When we moved we called and they told us we were never told that and they don’t do that. The panel was constantly going offline. Which was beyond us. We had the fastest cable internet offered at the time. I called SEVERAL times to try to resolve issues. Eventually we gave up. We have lived in our home we relocated to for over a year in a half now. The absolute worst decision I made in my 40 years on this planet was answering the door 6 years ago when a young, pushy salesman came knocking. 6 years later, I'm still dealing with the headache that is vivint. I'm not joking when I say that vivint is by far the most evil company I've ever dealt with. There are many other companies offering the same system, or the same type of system. What matters is how they treat you as a customer. Vivint sees you as a cash cow. Nothing more. Regardless of what they tell you, you cannot get out of their contract for any reason.
