Customer Experience

Customer Service - 4 / 5

The company has been criticized by people posting to the BBB and TrustPilot for denying claims and charging undisclosed fees.

However, for a company of this size and age, there are very few such complaints.

Since people seldom write to consumer websites with good things to say about their insurance company, the low number of complaints is actually a positive sign.

However, the company has a high NAIC complaint ratio.

Although Hartford has multiple corporate listings with NAIC, nearly all of them reflect a higher than average number of complaints.

National Association of Insurance Commissioners

NAIC Complaint Ratio
10.72
NAIC Total Complaints
10
*The NAIC complaint ratio (in this case 10.72) is a ratio of the number of complaints a company received to the total premiums written in a calendar year. The median complaint ratio across all companies is 1. A score below 1 means the company received fewer than average complaints. A score above 1 means the company received a higher number of complaints than average.

These discounts are not as extensive as those provided by other carriers.

Our experience was a negative one - figuratively and literally. After weeks of waiting, they paid my wife $3,147.14. Three days later they took it out of her account and left her with bounced check fees. Several more weeks later - after several poor customer service experiences where they admitted they had made an error, they finally paid her a little something to get her by. It was a check for $1.29.

Watch out!! Hartford will deny coverage for "faulty construction" no matter when that construction was done. I had a water heater failure which flooded 1000 sq ft of floor. In a 1965 home, tile came loose and tented up in half that area. Hartford hires an engineer to come look, and make a report saying it was installed improperly, therefore they deny ANY coverage! How in the world could anyone expect a tile contractor from who knows how long ago, be held to today's standards? and is that our fault? How do you buy a home now? home inspections don't show that?

My sister has been with the company many many years also. Her premium doubled also after a claim concerning mold damage. We're saying bye bye to them and have new quotes from several insurance companies that are back in the acceptable range to pay. We're in Northern Indiana. My sister has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and probably didn't understand what she was paying for. She just paid what she was charged no questions asked. She has a very high credit rating and probably did not want to jeopardize it. I'm so glad I caught this. The elderly are taken to the cleaners a lot. But - I never thought an AARP company would take advantage of their seniors. Bye bye AARP also.

I have been with the company for 20 years. Received my renewal papers today and was shocked by the premium increase. MY HOMEOWNER'S PREMIUM WENT UP 100% - DOUBLED! 20% increase, "beacause of the increase in doing business in the state of Washington". BUT, could not explain what that means......... An 80% increase because of a $5,000 water leak claim last year. Prior to the claim, I called Customer Service to see if this would change my premium. I was told no because of my longevity with them and $5,000 was not a large claim. NOW HERE I AM WITH MY PREMIUM DOUBLED.........AND IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE COMPANIES BECAUSE OF MY CLAIM.
