Overall Rating: 4.2 / 10 (Average)

PrivacyGuard claims to offer better-than-average credit reporting services at an average cost. They provide both credit scores and reports, as well as ID theft prevention and ID theft insurance. The company's introductory offer is not quite as good as others, since the time period is only 14 days and it costs $1 instead of being free. Of more serious concern, however, are the billing practices of the company that owns and operates PrivacyGuard, which have landed the company in trouble in 47 states. Consumers may be attracted by PrivacyGuard's more robust array of services, but should be wary and watchful about its recurring billing policies and practices.

Unlike some of its competitors, PrivacyGuard offers its customer both credit scores and credit reports. Credit monitoring and change alerts are done daily, while reports are issued once a month. These services are somewhat better than industry norms.

Plans and Pricing - 4 / 10

Although PrivacyGuard does not have a free trial, it does have a 14-day trial period for only $1. However, if the customer does not cancel within that time, he or she is then billed monthly at full plan rates. The company's basic credit monitoring plan costs $19.99 per month. Basic ID theft protection costs $9.99 per month. A combination plan costs $24.99 per month. These rates are competitive with others in the industry.

PrivacyGuard Reputation & Support

Reputation & Support - 4 / 10

PrivacyGuard is owned by Trilegiant Corporation, which in turn is part of the Affinion Group. Regulators in 47 states have penalized this company for unfair and deceptive business practices. Affinion and Trilegiant have also been named in various class action suits, many of which focus on the companies' billing practices. PrivacyGuard employs similar recurring payment models, so consumers should be wary. The BBB gives Affinion Group an A+ rating, due in part to the company's apparent responsiveness to consumer complaints. Neither Privacy Guard nor Affinion is listed on TrustPilot.
