We finally fired the Hartford after years of being severely shortchanged, especially after our house (and two new ACs) was struck by lightning and the snowpocalypse of February 2021. They refused to pay for damaged televisions, as well as a lot of other equipment which has never worked well again. You’ll do better elsewhere.

Signed up with AARP Hartford for home and auto policies. Was charged $1453.00 for both policies. I paid for full year. Eighty days later I canceled policies over an additional charge they tried to charge me. I figured my refund based on eighty days of the year I was covered, 21.9% of the year (80 days divided by 365 days in year) and therefore I would be receiving a refund of 78.1% of the $1453.00 which would be $1134. plus change. I received $1018.00. I called and talked to customer service and the person relayed the message to me that they had refunded the correct amount. I asked how they arrived at the amount and if they charged me a cancelation fee or any other fee to cancel insurance?... Read More

My in-laws asked me about my auto and homeowner insurance because they thought their Hartford insurance through AARP was too high. I took them to my independent agent and they ran a quote for them. The results were unbelievable. The quote came back from HARTFORD, it was the EXACT same coverage for hundreds of dollars less! Hartford through AARP is a ripoff.

The insurance agent Dee just tried to scam me and tell me there was a balance due on my deceased father's policy. When I asked for proof she put me on hold for a very long time then came back and said Oh I am so sorry I misquoted there is no balance on the policy. Then proceeds to tell me in order to give me a quote that I had to move my homeowners insurance policy to the Hartford in order to insure my fathers home. What a scam she is. I refuse to do business with a company that hires such unscrupulous people.

Very disappointed in the handling by the Hartford Ins., of the return of insurance funds to an Estate for a deceased person is handled ton an AAAP sanctioned company. I submitted the proper paperwork for removing the vehicle from the road and cancelling the insurance. I never received a word from the company, I called just under two months later and was advised that they sent the money back to the credit card company, Bank of America. I replied, that as the party is deceased, the credit card has been closed due to the DEATH of the insured, so therefore, no money should be sent on a closed account. as they are aware the person is deceased as they have the death certificate. I was advised... Read More

The Hartford wants my wife and I (which are seniors) to pay $1,587.41 in June for our yearly premium coverage and we have no accidents or tickets? The Hartford has been raising our payment every year for the last 3 years why? I called Hartford last year and the lady told me, it is because of all the other bad drivers who get into accidents. Well, it wasn't me or my wife? This year the Hartford claims by improving the factors which come from my credit report, I can strengthen my insurance score, which could result in lower insurance premiums in the future? So the Hartford uses my insurance score to determine my premium? I have been paying every year in advance since 2016 (which was a little... Read More

dropped our homeowners policy with a reason that they decided to not insurance this zip code any longer. Dropped our comprehensive without stated reason. Poor communications. When we re-insured with another but reputable company, they were shocked to hear of Hartford's capriciousness. Other complaints talk about how hard it is to get a claim properly paid. We're moving companies before we find ourselves in that predicament. I never should have called their underwriter an undertaker, he was probably anger.

Had to drop the auto & homeowner policy since rates went sky high. Had a fender bender that cost them $803 so they spiked our rate over 30% (tried to pay other driver ourselves). Still waiting for refund of $250 for over 10 days- they said they RUSHED it thru?

Wife's car was parked and hit. 4 years later we have an at fault accident against us for $45 that's u explained. Even after complaints to insurance commission. Our VW was recalled so we cancelled the insurance. When we bought a new Toyota they refused to insure it. Cannot be trusted.

The Hartford is a shady business. They will agree they owe half of damages and mail the check (they really owe full but will only agree to half) when you start complaining and filing complaints with the officials they MAGICALLY remember a state statue that keeps them from paying anything they stop payment on the check and hide behind this state statute they magically remembered weeks after agreeing they owed money. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy! The company retaliated once I filed complaints and they then stopped payment on their check and are hiding behind a state statue that was there when they agreed to pay initially claiming "we only just found it" Really, its been there... Watch out for this company and make sure you read the fine print. They pulled a bate and switch on me for insurance rate. Interviewed me for insurance where I disclosed a previous fender bender and they quoted a rate. I accepted rate and they sent policy which I paid. A month later they sent another policy stating the accident would increase my rate by $500/yr for 5 years! If they had been up front with me I wouldn't have accepted the rate. I bailed and went back to my old company. Note: They also have a company policy where your rates will increase if you are involved in an accident even if you were not at fault! So if someone hits you, your rates go up! How is that fair?

My experience with Ian with The Hartford Auto Insurance Claims Adjuster was horrible. It took me 2 days of me calling to finally get ahold of the adjuster to get the claim started. The adjuster was rude and I am pretty sure he hates his job. I filed a complaint and someone called me back but it didn't help the adjust with his poor customer service. The adjuster seemed put out when I called for an updated instead of being helpful and making sure I understood all that was going on. It took the collision place a week to get the supplement check to be able to get my car worked on and finished. I wouldn't refer my cat to this company even though I am not their customer which is probably why... Read More

If I could give no stars, I would. Hartford informed me that they were totaling my 2004 Acura with 100,000 miles on it because it would cost $7,000 to repair it. They told me the car was worth $5,000. As proof my car was worth more, I sent 3 files of cars with an average of 41,000 MORE miles per car, each being sold for between $8,000-$9,000. I had to buy the car back from Hartford and have it fixed myself. They not only undercut the worth of my car, they also deducted $1,600 they would have received for salvage. I paid to have my car returned to its original beauty. I then received a notice from the DMV saying my car was destroyed and I had to purchase a new title. Hartford did not... Read More

The AARP Hartford Auto Insurance company provides for very good insurance rates for Auto insurance. However, they make a lot of errors on their paperwork, and as a customer you have to be diligent and not only catch their mistakes but get them corrected. I found them (the people and agents I talked to) mostly very easy, courteous and pleasant to deal with. This is an important factor for me. They really need to improve themselves quite a bit. Their process controls and software problems are creating some of the issues that needs to be fixed. As far as AARP is concerned, their choice of this insurance company is average and with their "power of Membership" they could have chosen a... Read More

I didn't know that we were driving a car without insurance. I called the customers services, they were very disrespect. I had to paid the MD DMV fine each car $150. I'm more than 12 years insured with Hartford. They said my premium had increased because of poor credit. I contacted TransUnion. They said that 18 of 19 entries on my report were "bogus".. "incorrect"~! Hartford then told me it was NOT their responsibility to check my credit rating. I asked them to check it~! They said "NO"... they would not recheck my credit rating. There seems to be NO compromise, or "consideration" with Hartford... It's "their way"... or the "highway!" Corporate Conclusion: There is a good market for additional...reasonable... auto insurance companies with reasonable insurance rates.

I am thoroughly disappointed and disgusted with the outcome of my claim. My car was rear ended and the claim went to arbitration. Geico was able to get a 50-50 fault decision against me, even though I am 0% at fault according to The Hartford and all common sense. After 10 years of car and homeowners insurance with no claims, this is how they represented me. Pathetic. Looks like I go shopping at renewal time.

I had The Hartford for 12 years never had but 1 claim over a deer..My card got compromised online and had to be canceled.. I had made my payment but couldn't get into a computer to change the info on the new card and my payment didn't go through.. They were nasty and the man on the phone Brian was very disrespectful to me.. They canceled my insurance after 12 years taking the defensive drivers coarse, joining the AARP... So I would think about going with this company if I were YOU.....!!!

Hartford Insurance through AARP picture is adjuster circling all the hail damage. We suffered hail damage in the Nisswa area Minnesota 6/18/16 which hit the campground where we were. We filed a claim for the damage to our truck which was close to 6k. Adjuster was awesome, our truck was handled in a very professional, concise manner. We were treated fairly. Sadly though we have our trailer with National General, BIG MISTAKE. I posted a review on them. Still working to get out trailer fixed over 2 months later.
