Overall Rating: 3.6 / 5 (Very good)

Erie is a well established insurance company that does business on the eastern seaboard and in the Great Lakes region. The company gets high marks for claims satisfaction and offers an unusually large number of discount options. It also provides a larger than average number of optional coverages. The company interacts with its customers primarily through its agent network. As such, it is a very good choice for motor vehicle insurance for those who live in the 12 states where it does business.

Unlike many policies, Erie covers their insured drivers when they are driving moving vans for personal use. Read more about the top car companies here.

*The NAIC Car Insurance complaint ratio (in this case 1.49) compares a company’s performance to other companies in the market. The median complaint ratio across all car insurance companies is 1. A score below 1 means the company received fewer than the expected number of complaints. A score above 1 means the company received a more than the expected number of complaints.

Claims Satisfaction & Customer Experience - 4 / 5

Although Erie has received a higher than average number of NAICS complaints, it scores very highly in the area of auto claims satisfaction. The company has no presence on TrustPilot and has only a handful of reviews on the BBB website. This suggests general customer satisfaction with the company, but also that those relatively few people who have issues with the company have pursued them zealously.

Pricing & Discounts - 4 / 5

Erie offers more pricing and discount offers than many of its competitors. It also offers, at extra cost, a rate lock policy whose premiums will stay the same so long as the vehicle, the named insureds, and the customer's place of residence remain the same. As with all insurers, premium costs vary considerably by state, but Erie's aggressive discount policy suggests that those who qualify for their discounts may save significantly on their premiums.

The Agent never met with us. He never explained anything to us and our bill wasn't much less than State Farm. Went metvhim.at his off8ce and he was "too busy" to speak to us . He told us the receptionist could handle it. She never tolded us any thing about the policy I was writing a check forbthe insurance and she grabbed my check out of my hand and took the entire policy amount out. I had not planned on paying for the full year. Never receieved any cards with insurance info to carry in our wallets , after asking twice. I printed up cards for us to carry with policy info and phone numbers . I am not thrilled with this inurance so far.

I’ve been with Erie for 17 years and only ever opened one claim 8 years ago when I hit a deer. The damage was under $2000 to fix. I’ve also have had a clean driving record for 10 years with no points on my license. This year I ran into a little bit of bad luck. I was in an accident were the other driver ran a red light , but I was sighted by police for failure to yield to on coming traffic because I couldn’t prove they run the light and there were no witnesses. Then in less than 36 months I accidentally backed into my husband’s car in our driveway coming out of our garage. We have accident forgiveness. So I called them and open another claim after hitting my husbands car. What I was not... Read More

Stay away from Erie. They will find anything they can to not pay a claim. No good.
