Pets Best provides pet owners with a lot of latitude in selecting the right coverage for their pet and the best plan for their budgets. Its plans are quite comprehensive and comparatively low-cost. The company offers two benefit limit choices: $5000 or unlimited. We prefer plans that offer the option of unlimited coverage, particularly when adding it doesn't drive costs sky-high. That's the case with Pets Best. Pets Best has no age restriction; they will cover dogs and cats regardless of how old they are. The company does not exclude cruciate ligament issues so long as they occur after a 6-month waiting period. That's a significant competitive advantage for owners of dogs susceptible to that type of illness. In addition, plans include coverage for accidental dental and some dental illnesses. Combined with the company's relatively low premiums, that make Pets Best a solid choice for pet parents seeking comprehensive, affordable protection.

Pets Best Coverage

Coverage - 4.3 / 5

Pets Best offers three levels of coverage. The Essentials plan reimburses you for the wide range of veterinary services offered by most pet insurance plans, but excludes exam fees for accidents and illnesses and rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. The company's Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services and its Elite plan includes rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy for an additional fee.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Pets Best offers two benefit cap options: $5,000 or unlimited. We like to see plans that offer, even at a minimum, significant coverage. One serious accident or illness could result in veterinary bills way in excess of the low benefit limits some other companies offer. $5000 seems a reasonable and cautious amount of insurance to carry if you want to be fully prepared to give your pet all the veterinary care he or she needs.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Pets Best allows you to choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Combined with the opportunity to customize a deductible, that flexibility can make pet insurance more affordable for a wider range of customers.

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Pet's Best allows you the flexibility to set your deductible in increments between $50 and $1,000. That's a broader range of options than many plans provide.

Pricing: How much does Pets Best cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Pets Best pricing is quite flexible. The company allows you to choose deductibles ranging from $50 to $1000 and reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, and 90%. There are however, only two choices of benefit limits: an annual cap of $5000 or unlimited benefits. The company's two higher-priced plans include reimbursement for exam fees resulting from accidents or illnesses, a feature that's not often found in other plans and can wind up saving customers quite a bit in out-of-pocket costs. Overall, Pets Best provide excellent coverage for the money.

As an insurance agent, I feel morally obligated to urge anyone reading this to NOT purchase from Pets Best. I have had MUCH better luck with Figo (and I can't even sell policies for Figo since my company is contracted with Pets Best). In my personal opinion, this company has got to be the WORST pet insurance company on the planet. After my claim was denied, I reviewed my policy and the "What's not covered? See a FULL list here". No where was it mentioned that this was an exclusion (infection post de-claw). They blew my concerns off on the phone and I subsequently filed a small claims case. Their lawyer argued that Pets Best is not an insurance company, but rather a third party that... Read More

Absolutely a waste of money! I signed up for both their insurance as well as their wellness program that is supposed to include office visits and common care services. Paid a lot of money each month! The first claim I had was for a simple office visit. The veterinarian popped a small cyste (pimple) on her back and told me that it was nothing to worry about. The bill for the doctor visit was only $72 which was less than even one month of premium payment on the PetsBest insurance. I immediately filed the claim on their phone app and after 2 weeks they finally got back with an email telling me that they couldn't get any information from Banfield (A vet, but not my dogs vet) I... All the online rumors about this company are true! Total scam! They blame pre-existing conditions for any expensive claims, but pay out on the small claims. Don't waste your money. Save $50-100 a month and put it in the bank, then the money will be there when you need it.

There are no words for how horrible they are... they delay paying claims, have in correct fax number on their claim forms, keep having to fax and refax time after time... I finally opened a claim with the DOI and voila they paid... however their VP of claims tried explaining why they delayed paying and they were all lies.. I had kept a log of every fax and every conversation I had... I call them Pets Worst... I had two giant breed dogs and unfortunately I am stuck with them for one dog.. I have pulled my second one off and even though it's costing me more money to have them separately insured, it's well worth the money... I give them no stars

We paid premiums for several years with Pets Best insurance for our two dogs. Each year we paid the premiums in full and even though the cost continued to go up. I am retired now and this year the premiums went up considerably and I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to afford it. One dog's renewal was June 15, 2018. I made several calls to Pets Best and left several messages and an email for Gina Hinojosa who helped me adjust my plan last year. I never heard from her. On Thursday, June 14th I called again and spoke with “Penny.” She told me they could raise the deductible by another $100, take 70% reimbursement and drop the rehab/physical therapy and holistic/alternative and it would... Do not buy Pets Best. They will raise your rates quickly. Mine went up 400% in three years. Go with Healthy Paws. Or Trupanion. There rates are much better priced. And they don't gouge you down the road.

I just canceled my policy with Pets Best after having been a customer over a year. When you need to use their services they will find every possible way of not helping you. I asked them to review an estimate from the vet prior to paying for the services. I wanted to know if the procedures would be covered. Pets Best refused. Typical service from an insurer. Save your money, these people are a scam.

I was very excited to sign up my dog for Pet's Best Insurance after reading (mostly) good reviews about customer's experiences with Pet's Best and especially their speedy claim processing time. I submitted a claim that would mostly just cover my deductible. The claim was in the "received" status for one week. On day 8, It changed to "records requested from vet". I called and spoke with a very pleasant customer service representative who informed me that first time claims "take a bit longer". I have read numerous reviews on-line regarding first time claims with a five day turn-around time. The representative then told me that it usually takes two to three days to get the requested... I don't understand all the bad reviews here. I have 4 dogs covered by Pet's Best. In the 6 years I've had this coverage this was the first year I had to file claims for 2 different dogs. All claims were paid out fairly and in a reasonable amount of time. One of my latest claims for my dog that was diagnosed with cancer took a couple days longer because vet records were requested. I assume this was because he was diagnosed during a dental appointment and we do not have dental coverage. Pets Best covered that entire appointment minus the cost of the teeth cleaning. I was more that happy. Sadly after a CT scan it was determined this same dog has an inoperable Osteosarcoma and he only has a... Read More

Definitely not the best option out there. I found a health insurance provider that covers the same as pets best, plus they had the Wellness option included in the same amount per month that I was paying for my pets best policy without the Wellness option.

I began using Pets Best in 2009 when I rescued my dog in anticipation of increasing medical needs as she aged. She was 3 years old at the time and Pets Best premiums and coverage seemed reasonable. In her lifetime, I've made a total of 7 claims. 2 were denied and 4 were made this February as my aging dog has had several cancerous tumors. Nonetheless, Pets Best' premiums have steadily increased over the past few years; over $200 per month in 2017, to over $400 in 2018. I continued to pay because my dog's medical needs were increasing but this month I received a notice that they would increase again to over $600. All told Pets Best has paid out less than $5,000 in my dog's lifetime and at... Read More

I would have never anticipated writing a negative review for Pets Best Insurance. When I first got my policy for my English Mastiff, the annual fee was $476.16 (2016-2017). Mines was a modest policy - $200 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and $5000 annual coverage. The first year was a rough year for my dog and I took that policy right up to the $5000 annual coverage. The service during that first year was so phenomenal that I wrote a fabulous review for Pets Best and continued the accolades by suggesting this pet insurance to anyone who would listen. The next year, the policy went up to $631.23 (2017-2018). I assumed such a large jump was due to the amount I had claimed, but was told... Read More

I'm one of the "lucky" ones that got a denied claim because of so BS this company spews. They are not interested in customer service at all. We got your money so F you is what you get. I have noted that not one of the responses from this clown Isis G actually showed anything in the client's favor. Just more run around and rhetoric but nothing accomplished. Liars and Thieves. DO NOT go with this company. They will not reimburse your major claims. They are are scam.

Such a horrible company. I have never experienced such rude and inept customer service reps at any company before. I have been paying them nearly $100 a month for the last year, and unfortunately had to submit my first claim. I'm assuming they are looking for any way to deny the claim - but that would require them to process it in the first place. I keep getting emails that they have requested my dog's records, but my vet has sent them multiple times and I have forwarded them multiple times and still nothing. Finally cancelled all my policies, and did charge backs with my bank to get reimbursed. Disappointed in such a poor company! I will just put their premium amount in my pocket... Read More

I have submitted several claims for my dog, after one month their website has 'processed' next to all my claims, when I opened up detailed information, it said that petsbest tried to contact my vet but were unsuccessful. So, I called my vets' department of records, and they told me no-one has ever contacted them from petsbest regarding my pet. Well, I authorized the release of information to petsbest anyway and called petsbest. They said they would contact my vet again. Two weeks passes by, I call petsbest, they tell me that all my claims are closed. Nevertheless they kept charging me money for their lack of services. Extremely unprofessional. Stay away from that company, as they will make... Read More

(VPI paying reduced usual and customary rates) I paid 1,000 for a yr with a 5 yr old gsh.. 90% reimbursement and 250 ded,, My dog has cancer now and pets best has already paid out over 40,000 where my share is 4,000. they pay fast and havent denied many things.,, except hyperbaric chamber and ozone therapy... otherwise very fine

Believe it or not it costs about the same amount for my each of my college age children's insurance with significantly better coverage than for my dog who is perfectly healthy. I have had PetsBest for my 10 year old small mixed dog since 2012 with a maximum $5000 coverage. My premiums have tripled in 5 years. I have submitted one claim in the five years for $730 ish and I have a $500 deductible so I have only gotten roughly $230 from the company. The claims process was easy, but this year they want $1200. It seems to me that they are increasing the price so much each year to discourage people from keeping their aging dogs on the plan. I dol not recommend this plan.

I'm very pleased with PetsBest! I recently purchased a policy for my new rescue dog one week after adopting him. I took the Best Wellness option because a wellness benefit is important to me, and this one has a good return on premium if you're going to do all the things you should for your pet anyway. My first two wellness claims were approved very quickly, and I received reimbursement in my bank account within 3 days. My third claim was initially intended to be another wellness claim, for a teeth cleaning, but then my dog unexpectedly had a cracked tooth that had to be removed. I was thrilled when PetsBest actually covered a portion of the surgery and medications, subject to my... Read More

Our animals have been covered thru Pet's Best insurance for over 13 years. My complaint is in the Gouging of Price increases EVERY year...it's almost as if you are being punished for your pets growing old. All of our animals are rescues, we even rescued a senior dog a few years ago, despite his eccessively large Pet's Best Insurance rate. The customer service at Pet's Best is fantastic, everyone that answers customer calls is lovely. BUT you cannot continue to increase premiums yearly at such a drastic rate. This year our premiums have gone up $800 dollars on 2 pets..last year , we removed one pet from Pet's Best because we found better coverage, less rate hikes at Healthy Paws. I... Read More

I just received a denial of appeal from Pet's Best due to what they state is a pre-existing condition regarding a slightly elevated liver panel number. My vet completely disagrees and provided records all the way back to 2013 showing no evidence of any liver issues. We had two very high liver panel tests (done on the same day) in February, extremely worrying. Our vet ordered an ultrasound which showed a completely normal liver and all other organs around it looking perfectly healthy. A re-test on March 7 showed numbers all back down to below where they were for the very first test and my vet said the problem is clearly environmental. I sent the March 7 test results to Pet's Best, got a... Read More

This is insane. There are FAR too many bad reviews to dismiss. I signed up for PetsBest but I'm still within the 30 day trial period. I wanted to provide the best care for my dog, but PetsBest will not be the way I go now. The editor even felt the need to point out the bad reviews to readers (And I thank him for that). Warning bells are going off all over the place. They need to learn that reviews make or break a business and when your business dealings are shady and littered with loopholes, then it comes back to haunt you. Review after review complaining about loopholes for paying on claims and then hearing about all the payment increases...yeah no thanks. Part of their policy... Read More

This insurance company does not live up to its promises. I signed up for the insurance and payed a year of premiums at roughly $135 per month. When it came time to pay a claim for a broken tooth (which is covered under the insurance) they would NOT pay the claim and when I sent it back for appeal...you could hear the crickets chirp....I'm STILL waiting to hear about the appeal...what a waste of money. SO VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! I will definitely shop around a choose one of their competitors. Based on the reviews below...it sounds like they have a predictable pattern= pay out the small claims but when a big claim comes in, attribute it to pre-existing or some other disqualifying... I can tell you that Pets Best is excellent for reimbursement period of claims. However, be careful and pay attention to how Pets Best categorizes any issue your pet may have. For example, I took my dog to the vet years ago for a staph infection he caught from being groomed at PetSmart and documentation was provided; Pets Best took the medication that was prescribed to treat the issue as an indicator of a condition called pyoderma. So pay close attention, they are good at creating pre-existing conditions when there are none. Because of that issue, Pets Best suggested that I shouldn't upgrade my policy to the unlimited plan when they got a new underwriter a few years ago, because they... Read More

Thus far they have weaseled in every way they can not to pay any claims. They are supposed to cover standard exams etc as well as health problems. My dog got a rash on his skin. They at first blamed a reaction to the flea stuff and when that was proven wrong per my vet, they are now saying it had to do with his runny eyes.

Do not use petsbest, they will give the run around, they say fast claims not true, first the need your dogs medical records before you can get your claim processed 8 -30 days. Find another insurnace company that will not just take your money.
