Fine Print

Savings from enrolling in the MetLife PDP will depend on various factors, including how often participants visit the dentist and the cost for services rendered.

Plan provisions regarding eligibility and late entrants apply.

MetLife VisionAccess is a discount program and not an insured benefit. It is provided through Vision Service Plan (VSP), Rancho Cordova, CA. VSP is not affiliated with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company or its affiliates.

Deductible waived for diagnostic and preventive services for plans 1 and 2. Plan number 2 is not available in Mississippi and Texas.

Groups with no prior dental coverage, or without acceptable evidence of prior dental coverage can only choose plan 3.

Out-of-network benefits are payable for services rendered by a dentist who is not a participating provider. The Reasonable & Customary charge is based on whatever is lowest among (1) the dentist's actual charge, (2) the dentist's usual charge for the same or similar service or (3) the charge of similar dentists in the area for a similar service or services.

Summary

Metlife Dental provides decent savings on group plans and is especially useful for small businesses looking for dental coverage. However, this is subject to the availability of network and participating dentists in the area.

Auto system is not helpful. They don't keep records of previous attempts for solutions of cover details.

Once again MetLife refused to pay on a crown that was 50 years old and leaking even though I appealed it. I am submitting a grievance form to MetLife and will work with my human resources to try to prevent them from offering this worthless insurance. DO NOT ENROLL WITH METLIFE. John C.

Metlife dental insurance is worthless. They deny payment for just about everything a good dentist will order. They refuse to pay for crown replacement even when the crown is broken or has decay under it. It doesn't cover the cost of basic cleanings and nickel and dime dentists until they refuse to participate. This is a scam and appeals do nothing. I just got a notice that they have revised their payment for the little they paid my dentist for a crown replacement and rescinded the payment,.

MetLife states they will pay 40% for a root canal for an out of plan endodontic but pays a much lower rate to the dentist than is normally charged for the service. This actually means they are reimbursing less than 30% for the service and of course the patient must make up the difference. With no insurance I paid $1490 for a root canal. With the metlife high plan I paid $1400. How can this company remain in business? How is it possible that the Veterans Administration allows this to happen? Isn't there an insurance commission or regulatory commission to make sure these abuses are curtailed?

I wish I could rate a Minus 5 Star. This company is completely useless! I had Metlife Dental Federal Insurance as a secondary policy for my wife and I. My premiums for the year came to $1,010.40, that is $84.20 a month through my FAA Retirement. Metlife paid a total for the year to my dentist of $283.80. If I had not had this Metlife Dental Insurance, I would have an extra $726.60 in my pocket. Good for the company, bad for the customers. I cancelled this policy the very first day of open season this year.

I am a dentist that accepts Metlife. This company is a league of their own as far as dirty tricks and dishonesty. for example: i recently did a predetermination for a crown on a patient. The predetermination was returned stating that they agree that placing a crown is acceptable and that Metlife would pay the agreed upon 50% of the maximum allowable which was in the $600 range.... very low. The treatment was completed, the claim sent in and Metlife reneged on the predetermination. The patient has to pay the full cost of the crown. Of course they are mad at me because I said they would pay. This has only happened about 5 times in my 30 year career. STAY AWAY FROM METLIFE DENTAL... Read More

This is the worst dental insurance I have ever had, everything your dentist sends in they deny and offer a cheaper alternative. They have a review board of supposedly real dentist 😂😂, I was told they would cover bridges so I increased my coverage then they deny it but I still have to pay the extra premiums for a full yr. Do not get this insurance it will be cheaper if you just took to your dentist they will work with you. No one should ever buy this insurance.

Metlife FedVip Dental Insurance is an absolute scam. Keep shopping around. You will pay more in premiums and co-pays than Metlife pays in claims. The customer service is shotty and unprofessional. The appeals process is difficult, takes a long time, and will be denied regardless of supporting documents. My previous dentist dropped Metlife in March 2023 after I had scheduled a crown. I had the option to pay out of network cost or find a new provider. I foud a provider, but she required an exam before agreeing to do the procedure. Metlife denied appeal and refused to pay for office visit and paid $285 of $1200 claim while I had to come out of pocket over $550. What is the point of having... Read More

I have had a claim open since November of 2022, that is 6 months, and the service representative does not know why is has not been paid. I keep calling and all they can do is escalate it. Now I am receiving a bill from my dentist that if I do not pay will be turned over to bill collection. It seems that the claims department has no concern for what and when something gets paid. I will never use this insurance again and will notify my employer of the poor service.

Imagine paying for a premium but when you attempt to get work done there is a soft lock for 6 months. In short, Metlife is a scam and should be investigated for improper practices and fraud. 4.5 stars is obviously from paid shills.

These people are a nightmare. They have me going in circles to cancel this horrible insurance. Also, they put me on a contract; I am requesting to have it canceled after the contract and they are still asking me to write a letter for the cancellation. Meanwhile, they keep taking money out of my bank account for insurance I am no longer using.

MetLife dental while covering part of the deep cleaning, does not cover the antibiotic that goes inside the pocket, it’s part of the procedure, and antibiotic is the reason for doing deep cleaning. They will cover only if gums are bleeding, and pockets are 6-8 inches deep, and this is full blown periodontal disease, so this company doesn’t care about prevention

If I could leave a zero I would. They are the absolute ARMPIT of insurance when it comes to getting claims paid. Even when you have fax confirmation that they received claims or extra information they requested, they still "didn't receive it," or they deny claims because of their errors, and you still have to call 5-10 times to resolve it. Don't ask for a supervisor, you'll be on hold for 30+ minutes then the call "magically drops." Go with another insurance company- they WILL NOT pay your claims.

Garbage coverage. Don’t waste your time or money. Find a dental school instead.

I've had Metlife Dental insurance through a federal employee program for over 15 years even though it is hard to find a participating dentist and reimbursements are modest. I have been diligent about semi annual, routine cleanings and exams. and therefore have had few claims except maintenance. Less than a month after my most recent exam I experienced significant pain in a tooth and returned to the dentist. The dentist performed an exam and x-ray and referred me to an endodontist to confirm a very old and failing root canal and it required special x-ray technique to discern. I did not expect and did not receive any reimbursement for the out of network endodontist. What surprised me... Read More

They are paying less than 50% of my preventative dental care, despite the fact that their plan says they cover 100% for both in network and out of network dentists. They told me it was because I "could have gone to a cheaper dentist". This company is a scam.

Be careful. Nearly impossible to get through to a human being. They have processes that require forms to be submitted to an Inbox that isn't monitored. I've waited a month and they can't confirm ever receiving or responding to standard forms [e.g. waiting period waiver]. They just keep saying to try and resubmit, and wait 3-5 days. Also, their Web site is atrocious. If you had an account with them at an employer and then try and establish your own account [e.g. Take Along Dental], good luck. It basically won't work without getting IT involved which is also next to impossible. Easily my worst customer service experience in any area of healthcare.

This company is a big fraud, I have been since November 2020 in need of a replacement for a fine bridge and they don’t want to pay for it my gums are swollen and I can’t eat almost anything we have sent multiples tests I need replacement and they simply deny it they are unscrupulous and stealing the money consumers pay don’t buy insurance with MetLife or you may lose all of your teeth.

I have paid in every paycheck for my dental plan to MetLife Dental plan. My last visit to a dentist was January 2020 due to Covid. In july 2021, I visit the dentist and need a new dental plate in replacement of one that is broken. The dentist submitted for reimbursement and was denied. This is the only claim that has been filed with Met Life Dental since January 2020. In trying to get an answer from Met Life, I have wasted over 3hrs on the phone..waiting and waiting and waiting in an attempt to speak with a supervisor. The individuals answering the phone only read from a script and cannot help you. What a waste of money!!!! I will be canceling my dental plan with Metlife Dental this... Read More

I have federal Metlife dental. Checked there website for a participating dentist. Found one nearby, received service just to have claim paid as an out of network dentist. Called to question why and was told it was a mistake. That dentist should not be there, however they have not covered the additional costs even though they admit it is their error. That was 2 years ago. They still have not paid the dentist, nor have I. Called again recently and was told that someone would call me back. Not. The out of network dentist is still listed as participating. They told me 2 years ago they would fix that.

Never go with Metlife Dental Insurance Coverage!! Believe me, they wouldn't even cover a poor homeless man shivering from the cold on the streets with a blanket , let alone cover you for Dental Insurance!! They are absolutely terrible, avoid them like a deadly plague!!!!

DO NOT USE METLIFE DENTAL FOR YOUR DENTAL COVERAGE. I retired a few years back after being a MetLife Dental holder thru my job for 20 years. After I retired, I took out a new policy that I WAS paying for, NOT my previous company. NEW POLICY....fast forward 5 years. My bridge broke in half needed a new one. Had the work done and Dentist filed claim. Then, filed claim again. Called the other day. I was told that there is NO COVERAGE because bridge was covered under the OLD POLICY and less than 7 years. THIS WAS A NEW POLICY TAKEN PUT AFTER RETIREMENT, and it was STILL DENIED. Unbelievable.

Met Life did not cover dental cleaning. If I have this much trouble with a basic service, fortunately, I will never use or recommend them to anyone. Filing a complaint with the State of FL. Repeated calls have not resolved this incredulous issue. I believe the term is "Elder Abuse". I call it theft.
