Lemonade is an insurance company that operates as a B (Benefit) Corporation chartered to do business with an eye toward social and ecological betterment.

During years where the amount it collects in premiums exceeds what it sets aside for current claims, administrative expenses, and future claims, that excess is donated to causes approved by its shareholders.

Overall Rating: 4.9 / 5 (Excellent)

Lemonade began operations in 2016 as a B corporation, a type of business entity that shares some similarities with nonprofits.

The company is committed to using its excess revenue to support socially and environmentally responsible causes. It is reinsured by Lloyds of London and other companies.

Because of the company's newness, small size, and limited geographical reach, many of the metrics with which traditional insurance companies are compared are unavailable for Lemonade.

Financial Strength

Financial Strength - 5 / 5

As Lemonade is relatively new and small and operates on a different financial model than other insurance companies, it's difficult to assess its financial strength.

It is not listed by the usual business finance rating firms. However, the company has a Financial Stability Rating® of A-Exceptional from Demotech Inc. and is reinsured by Lloyds of London and XL Catlin.

Customer Experience

Customer Service - 5 / 5

From its fun name to its user-friendly website, Lemonade is clearly trying to put their customers at ease and make buying insurance more fun than it is with some traditional insurers.

Since the company does not have much history behind it, however, it's hard to know how well this positioning translates into positive claims experiences.

The company has no offices or agents and does not publicize its phone number-all interaction with Lemonade is done online.

Pricing & Discounts

Pricing and Discounts - 4.8 / 5

Unlike traditional insurers, Lemonade is chartered as a "B corporation," which mean that their objectives are not only maximizing shareholder value, but also improving society and the environment.

What other companies would describe as "profit" is channeled by Lemonade into various causes. The company concedes that in some instances, this will make its policies more expensive than those of traditional insurers.

I’m very disappointed with the service. I filed my claim on June 20th. It’s been almost 3 weeks and I feel like I’m still running around in circles with Lemonade’s chatbots and customer service reps. I send in information that my Lemonade rep asked for, and later on, she asks me for the exact same information. Many times, 2-3 business days go by without any response. I’ve tried calling my rep on at least 3 different days and times, and I never receive any response. I signed up because I thought that Lemonade was different, or at least that’s what they claim to be. But as I did more research online, I found that many others have had the same experience. Based on the... Read More

Do not use lemonade. It is a scam. The company and interface is great until things happen. We got burglarized and lemonade began investigating US! They started asking for times to meet up to interrogate us. They would make it inconvenient so that you essentially give up or have to take a day off of work. Then, last minute, they cancel or postpone the interview / meeting. Extremely unprofessional. Pay some more money and go elsewhere... you'll feel a lot better!

The app is easy to use and looks good. I didn't have any trouble tailoring my policy to the coverage I wanted, and my premium is still 4x less than I was paying before Lemonade.

You think you are buying 20,000 in contents coverage. They don't send the policy for review until after it is in effect. In our case 30 days after the purchase. Our theft occurred before we had access to the policy, and instead of seeing how it could handle the claim, it suspected fraud first, accused us of such - even though we had continuous coverage for several years. In the end the chief claims officer offer a nuisance settlement, using a silly equation, paying $500 for a $12,000 claim. There is a reason it is $7 a month -- you get what you pay for. I this case -- nothing worth the $7 a month.
