Founded in 2015, Firstleaf is a wine club that uses technology to match consumers to wines that fit their unique tasting profile. With over 150,000 customers, Firstleaf uses consumer feedback to customize its boxes for every individual’s palate. The company’s wineries are located in Napa and Sonoma County, California.

Firstleaf provides members with direct-to-consumer wine services, delivering wines sourced from vineyards all over the world. Orders are delivered within 2-5 days to a location of your choice, with a frequency that can vary between one, two or three months, depending on the customer's answers during the introductory quiz. Nonetheless, delivery frequency can be adjusted at any time in the account settings.

Membership Programs

After completing a nine-question quiz about their wine preferences, customers can sign up for a customizable subscription. Customers can choose the type of wines they want to receive (reds, whites, or a mix of both),  as well as indicate whether they enjoy the occasional sparkling and rosé. 

If you decide to join the club, the initial shipment of six wines is $39.95. Subsequent orders cost $90 (around $15 per bottle). 

All Firstleaf club shipments contain six bottles that reflect each individual's taste, as determined by their wine profile and the ratings they submit online. By using an algorithm that analyzes 13 billion data points, Firstleaf states that each shipment gets better as you rate more wines. 

Customers can re-order their favorite wines or try new ones. Firstleaf gives customers the opportunity to preview each shipment, allowing you to swap out a wine you’re not interested in for something you'd enjoy more.

Membership can be canceled anytime and does not require a signup fee. However, if you are not ready to commit to a membership, you can shop at Firstleaf's online store, where you'll find various gift packs for purchase without the need to sign up. 

Shipping

Firstleaf ships to 46 states and Washington, D.C. (No deliveries to Alabama, Mississippi, Rhode Island, or Utah). Orders are usually shipped about 24 hours after being placed, with delivery via FedEx or UPS ground shipping. Speed of delivery varies by location, but typically takes about two to five business days.

Customer Service

Firstleaf offers its customers a 100% satisfaction guarantee: if, for any reason, you're not satisfied with a bottle you receive, you will get a credit for it (minus shipping) to use for another bottle in the future. 

Firstleaf’s Member Experience team is available to help customers via phone or chat seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET. Customers can also write them an email to resolve specific issues. 

Customers can also take advantage of a membership perk by booking an appointment with a certified wine concierge that helps in selecting the best wines suited to your palate.

Poor customer service. I postponed shipment and they shipped it anyway. I then cancelled. The shipped it after I cancelled and charged me a $20 restocking fee. Not a good company. Deceitful. Average wine.

Hugely disappointed. I was excited to try a wine subscription for the first time, and the first six bottles were fairly decent and a great deal for the money. I was supposed to receive an email in advance of a second box being sent, which never came. When it did not come, I decided that I did not like the uncertainty and cancelled my subscription online. Two days later, I get an email saying that the box is on its way - this is the first time I get any indication of which wine is actually coming to me. VERY YOUNG WINES! Orson Welles once said he 'wouldn't serve a wine before its time.' That's my chief complaint with FirstLeaf. An online ad invited me to try 12 bottles of 'fine wine' from FirstLeaf for the introductory price of only $87. How could I resist? Well, right before checkout, I quit the order. Here's why. The introductory 'quiz' that helps FirstLeaf select appropriate wines for you is too generic. It resulted in picking two wine varieties, such as Pinot Noir, that I would never drink. Don't sign up! You can't get out. I went through the lengthy process of getting my auto shipments stopped because of a drop in income and today they overdrew my checking account after being assured they would cancel my membership. Be safe, stay out. I had to do the same with Laithewaite. Their customer service people where easy to work with and my cancellation quickly processed. I'll go back to them when I'm able to.

The pandemic seemed like the perfect time to join a wine club. I never leave the house anymore and sure could use a drink! Unfortunately, these wines were not of sufficient quality, and certainly not worth $15 a bottle. I couldn't bring myself to finish many of them. I hoped that by rating them my wine matches would improve, but over the months my experience did not improve my at all. The latest shipment was the worst. I dumped a bottle of Reisling that tasted like apple juice and nail polish remover straight down the drain after half a glass. I tried the first promotion and doubled my order for free shipping. A few of the wines I liked, but most I did not. I was able to email and get a refund for what I did not like. Initially, they put a credit on my account without saying that was what they were going to do. I had to write back and ask for a refund to my credit card. Problem with the guarantee is you have to request a refund for a wine within 30 days, so If you don't go through all the wine in 30 days and then open a bottle you don't like, there is nothing you can do. This wine club has a terrible mobile website that makes it difficult to sign up to get ceratin wines delivered at certain dates, such as a "wine of the month club." Instead it wants you to sign in and change your order status after you have ordered. I accidently signed up with a nonexistent email address, therefore i could not sign in to change my order. I callled to cancel the order but got a run around about my email address not beingnot on file, again I put my email address in wrong by accident while signing up. First, the wines are not that great. Second, their tactics to keep you roped in are cheap and insulting. You get hooked in to membership and canceling is a bear! No trial period here. They make it super inconvenient to cancel, which can only be done online. Once you finally get to the cancellation screen, you need to go through more than THREE screens. They use the cheap approach that the airlines use to not actually give you a refund on COVID related cancelations by making the cancelation on the bottom of the screen in much smaller font.
