Harley-Davidson's motorcycling heritage is clearly evident in the strength and breadth of the motorcycle insurance coverages it offers. Rather than offering rebranded automobile insurance for bikers, H-D sells a package of coverages designed from the ground up for motorcyclists. People who are already in the H-D "ecosystem" of organizations and training classes will find especially attractive premium discounts, although people who seek multi-line policy bundles may be somewhat disappointed. H-D's motorcycle insurance is backed by a century-old financially-sound underwriter which suggests that it will maintain the ability to pay out on deserving claims even in periods of recession and financial downturns. Though there isn't much evidence about policyholder satisfaction, the very absence of complaints in an industry that attracts a disproportionate share of them is telling.

Harley-Davidson Insurance Coverage and Benefits

Coverage and Additional Benefits - 4.5 / 5

Harley-Davidson Insurance stands out for the breadth of its motorcycle insurance coverage options. In addition to the standard suite of motor vehicle coverages, H-D offers guest passenger coverage, roadside assistance, optional (non-factory) equipment insurance, vacation rental coverage that kicks in if you have an accident more than 100 miles from home, bike and optional equipment replacement cost coverage, rental reimbursement, and un- and underinsured motorist property damage coverage. H-D's coverage is also unusually broad in terms of the vehicles it covers. People can insure any motorcycle of any make, including those that are more than 25 years old, custom bikes, off-road vehicles, scooters, mopeds, trikes, and autocycles.

Harley-Davidson Insurance Pricing and Discounts

Discounts - 4.5 / 5

Perhaps because it is a primarily a motorcycle company, Harley-Davidson provides a number of discounts that are particularly targeted toward motorcycle riders. In addition to those listed below, H-D offers discounts for new motorcycles, having a motorcycle endorsement, being a homeowner, paying premiums promptly, remaining claim-free for at-fault accidents, purchasing other H-D services such as planned maintenance, and being a loyal customer. Although the company insures all motorcycles regardless of make, some of these discounts (such as the discount for purchasing other H-D services and the one for members of the Harley Owners Group) may be available only to Harley owners. As with all motor vehicle insurance products, the premium payments vary considerably depending on location, type of motorcycle, and the identity of the rider.

Harley-Davidson motorcycle insurance policies are underwritten by a unit of Sentry Insurance, a Wisconsin-based firm mutual insurance company established in 1904 that today ranks 720 on the Fortune 1000 list. Harley-Davidson Insurance Customer Experience

Claims and Reputation - 5 / 5

Harley-Davidson has one of the most strongly brand-loyal customer bases in the world, but it rests on the mystique of their motorcycles rather than the allure of their insurance. This makes the customer experience of H-D motorcycle insurance policyholders difficult to evaluate. Harley-Davidson has an A+ rating from the BBB and none of the comments or complaints concern the insurance end of its business. Its underwriter, Sentry Insurance, also has an A+ BBB rating and a near-average ratio of NAIC complaints, but only a fraction of its business involves H-D insurance.

Have auto payments each month but every month i get a cancellation notice. Complain about it and was told it’s taking care of and will not happen again. But surprise for the sixth month it happened again. Cancellation notice because my automatic payment didn’t take the money out of my account

Have had insurance on my 2021 Harley with Harley last two years, no claims. Traded in the bike for a new Breakout, 2024 called to find out how much the rate was. Ended up in a fight with the sales lady trying to find out! I ended up hanging on her. Ill move on.

I have had insurance with Harley Davidson Insurance many years...thought i was happy with this insurance company. I recently put in a claim for rock chip to our fender on out bike. First claim i have had with them. They want this to be a collision claim. Confused with that! I called them and got an agent explained what happened and they said that would be a comp claim. I have spoken with several other adjusters about a situation like this and all say the same it should be comprehensive claim. This isn't about the cost of the repair it is about how they are handling a claim period, what would be my service if we had been in an actual collision. I will be changing my insurance... Had a claim on my 2008 Honda Goldwing for a deer strike about 4 weeks after I bought the bike and the Harley Davidson insurance policy. The company did a great job - they handled my claim without delay and paid for all the repairs as expected, minus my $100 deductible.

At first I thought they were pretty good and reasonable. I had them for over a year on my first motorcycle, no complaints, UNTIL. A new driver ran a red light and I T-boned them, I was fine and she was at fault, one would think it was straight forward, it was then I learned how terrible HD Insurance really is. It started out filing a claim, everything seemed ok, then they decided based on pictures they were going to total the motorcycle, then they never asked if I had anything I needed to get off the motorcycle, they simply towed it and said send them the title. When they finally did payout on a total loss, minus the deductible, it was less then what I was initially told, (I probably... Read More

Motorcycle riders beware! This company may seem like the absolute ideal insurance for your bike, but it's not. The premiums change without notice, if you make a change to your policy your monthly payments can sky rocket depending on where you are at in your year of insurance. There is a cancellation fee if you decide to go to another company. Usually the cancellation fee is $60 or 10% of the total policy premium, in most cases, it's whichever amount is higher. The dealers aren't informed about how the insurance works, so they unknowingly have you purchase the policy if you buy your bike in the evening or on the weekend and tell you that you can cancel the policy with no problem. That... Read More

I had this company for over a year. My monthly payment was going to my credit card so I never missed a payment. Then what we all fear, fraudulent charges appeared on my credit card. My credit card company called me and we immediately closed that account. That was on April 14, 2020. My insurance payment was scheduled for the 15th, I did not even think about the payment as my credit card company told me that all reoccurring payments will be notified of my news account #. On April 15 when my payment didn’t go through the insurance company canceled my insurance. They never reached out to me to submit another payment type or anything. 4 days later I get a notice that they canceled my insurance... Read More

Three times the annual premium of the Foremost Insurance policy and Foremost provided more coverage. Then when I cancel they charge me a $45.99 early cancellation fee and threaten me with a collection agency if I refuse to pay it. POS rip-off. With subsidiaries like this, no wonder the motor company is struggling. I am buying an Indian next time.

Would not recommend this insurance company to my worst enemy. They keep hounding you after you have canceled the policy.
