You may qualify for HARP if your loan is owned or backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, you’re current on your payments, and your mortgage was originated on or before May 31 of 2009.

Don't be afraid to ask questions and get as much information as you can about the terms of the loan. Lenders are required by law to provide you with an estimate within three days of receiving your basic information, so make sure to go over all the details they provide. When comparing products, try not to focus on a single factor such as low interest rates, and instead consider the total cost of the loan and its repayment schedule. 

Watch out for balloon payments, hidden fees, a prepayment fee, and amortization schedules that could put off payments towards the principal loan amount for too long.
