Medigap coverage pays for the out of pocket expenses associated with traditional Medicare plans. These can include doctor office and hospital copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance. Plans A-N do this to varying degrees with F being the most comprehensive, taking care of all costs Medicare misses. Specific coverages and percentage of coverages depend on the plan. Plan F has a high deductible option customers can choose for lower premiums. With it, patients will be responsible for the first $2,200 in coinsurance, copays, and deductibles. Plans K and L have yearly out-of-pocket maximums of $5,120 and $2,560 respectively. Plan N has a $20 copay for some doctor visits and a $50 copay for ER visits.
QUALIFICATIONS
In order to qualify for Medigap coverage you must be 65 years or older and reside in a state where the policy is offered. Certain allowances can be made for those under the age of 65 if they are suffering from end-stage Renal disease, or certain disabilities. As far as pre-existing conditions go, if you apply for Medigap coverage when you are first eligible (within 6 months of your 65th birthday) you cannot be turned down or denied renewal because of a pre-existing condition. If, however, you enroll outside of this window, approval will be at the discretion of the provider.
