I called to cancel my account in April. The contract was until September 1st. They would not allow me to cancel my plan for September and told me I had to call back 30 days before the end of my contract to cancel it. It all felt scammy. I have ADHD which makes it really difficult for me to remember things, and even make phone calls. This lead to me forgetting to cancel last year when money got tight and I was locked into another year of payments. It also feels like they make you jump through hoops to finally cancel your account. This should be something you can do on their website, and still be charged for the remaining of your contract. I will just save my money from now on and put it... Read More

Do NOT use VSP if there is any possibility you will have cataract surgery. The plan offers NO BENEFIT to replace your glasses after the surgery because the pre-surgery glasses will no longer work. They offer a 20% discount on lenses and frames but basically you are paying the 20% in monthly increments with your premium. I received new glasses in December, had a surprise cataract grow in 3 months and had cataract surgery because my old glasses would no longer correct my vision. They will only say "sorry, you've already gotten a pair of glasses within the year." Your premium will continue to the end of that year. There is no consideration for the fact that you will need new glasses due to... Read More

VSP has been my family's vision insurance provider for many years. They are outstanding and I highly recommend enrolling with VSP if given the opportunity. We get VSP through our dental plan Beam and we could not be happier. Usually just the negative comments appear here but I thought it would be good to give some positive and genuine feedback! FIVE STARS!

As a provider of eye services, i have experienced terrible service and poor reimbursement for services and materials. They recently terminated our contract without notice and will not talk to us about payment for patients who were seen before termination and past errors of payment that they made. I have been a provider for them for many years and can't believe they would treat us this way. Their rules are very (unnecessarily) complicated and their professional relations people won' t even talk to us to resolve outstanding issues. This site wants us to give them a star rating but they don't have a negative rating available.

I got VSP Insurance and imagine my shock when I got new glasses with an in-network VSP provider and still had to pay $400. The last time I paid out of pocket for my glasses, I paid $700 plus. With VSP, I'm still paying $700 plus. So basically there is no difference in my cost between paying out of pocket and making money for VSP. They also make it very hard to file a claim. I wear progressives and I thought it was covered but the provider still charged me for what they claim are cost not covered by VSP. I also had to find frames that worked for my high prescription progressives and the provider did not have the right style so I bought from an online eyeglass retailer. It took 8 hours of... Terrible customer service(sounds like your talking to a bunch of 12 year olds). Spent 45 minutes on the phone while being transferred around 6 times. Ultimately told I could send an email. Asked to speak to a supervisor and was transferred to someone who never answered the phone. Paid the whole year upfront and wanted to cancel(after 5 1/2 months) and asked for some reimbursement for service not used. Reply was: your benefits will be discontinued at the end of the 12 months. Will never use them again.

My employer provides this vision insurance for us. The plan benefits as laid out in this article are not accurate for all. In the end, you get what you pay for. As per my annual eye exam yesterday, on top of the $20 co-pay for the exam, I had to purchase child frames for $15 and VSP only covered $50 of my bifocal lenses. I will be withdrawing from VSP before my next exam.

Upon arriving for an eye exam, VSP spontaneously denied my coverage claiming my employer’s account was listed as “pending” despite the fact I’ve been a customer for the last 3+ years and there was no evidence of any issues with my account upon logging into VSP’s website from my end. This was an extremely unfortunate situation considering I paid $30+ in Uber’s to/from my appointment without being able to be seen. I now know I never should have been denied coverage, and that my employer’s account merely appeared this way in VSP’s system because they were adding a new benefit to our VSP plan for the following calendar year. Makes no sense that none of the VSP reps I spoke to could articulate... Read More

I suppose this may work for in network providers. For out of network providers it is basically a scam. I have submitted receipts for eye exams, lenses and frames for out of network and been denied coverage twice because they couldn’t verify that the services were provided. If you call customer service there is impossibly long wait times and multiple disconnects. Finally I had another out of network encounter. This time the optometrist submitted the billing. Of course I had paid for everything up front. VSP issued the reimbursement to the optometrist, which is useless. Again calls to customer to claims, long waits and disconnects leave me with no actual reimbursement. So six years of... Read More

The worst experience I have ever had with both a website and attempting to get some guidance from Customer Service : 1) long wait time to connect to my call 2) dropping my call multiple times 3) not understanding the problem, 4) transferring me to another person who could answer only one of my questions 5) continued problems/errors setting up new account (due to having coverage with VSP 7 years ago they still have on record) 6) unsuccessful process to reset password ( 1st time login worked but error logging in the 2nd time w/PW not recognized . When I told one REP I had lost confidence in VSP handling my account they responded 'VSP is big, very big... military, Soc Sec, etc.) Five... Read More

Worst experience ever!!! I had to send my glasses back 3 times, wrong prescription the first two times, then the last time, the glass lenses came back scratched. VSP doesn't even care, customer service was horrible. They didn't even care that my glasses were damaged. The eye doctor even was shocked by the company's standards. Don't use VSP Insurance at all

2 stars off for being nearly impossible to contact a real person. 1 star off for a needlessly complicated web site. 2 stars off for not giving a "vision card" so I would know who to have COSTCO bill. 2 stars off for giving me the out of network rate because I didn't know who to tell COSTCO to bill. I give 1 and 1/2 stars back just so this isn't "lost" and I can warn others.

They get this rating because of their solicitation practices and constant email harassment EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT APPLIED TO OBTAIN VISION INSURANCE WITH THEM. After looking at their site they data STOLE my email and then started soliciting me via email with fish & bait offers. AT NO TIME DID I AUTHORIZE THEM TO EMAIL ME.....EVER! They leave me with no choice but to file a formal complaint with Federal Trade Commission and my State Attorney General. On top of this they want your financial information so they can automatically bill (and from what I see that in itself is causing problems).

they sent a bill in January that was missing the address to send it to. We phoned and eventually got an address and sent a check. Apparently the address was not optimal and they missed that check. Eventually they cashed it but still said we owe the money. Now they say they are dropping us at the end of the month but we need to pay through the end of the year. They may have meant they will drop UNLESS we pay the year in advance. I cannot tell. This has been through email, which is less hold time at least.

This company is worthless! They offer a free eye exam.. in billings Montana there is not one company on their list that will accept their insurance for the optometrist,, you have to pay out of pocket then you do all the required paperwork and still can’t get your money!! We faithfully paid for almost to years our monthly premium plus the eye exam and the lady we spoke with was so rude!! Please do not get insurance with this company!

Customer Service is terrible with this company. You talk to one person who refers you to another department and you start over again. Then you get to a person who tells you they can't help you. The only option for on-line contact lens ordering is Eyeconic (worse company than VSP) -of course as I was just told by the not helpful representative with VSP I don't have to use Eyeconic, I just have them as an option if I want to use my full benefits. What???? Why do I have insurance if I am not using my Full Benefit???? They took my full insurance premium every month. That is the type of service you can expect from VSP. Look elsewhere for your vision insurance.

Don’t expect any customer service with Morgan & White Group. Can’t set up an account to update payment method, cannot get office on the phone because they close on Thursday, which is odd. VSP can’t help since they don’t process monthly payments. This is a major problem for clients.

tl;dr: 1. The provided lens quality (made by VSP's own lab) is extremely poor and *unusable*, I have a 70$ pair (frames + lenses) that is much better. I have two pairs worth 800$ from VSP that I just can't use. 2. Customer service is ignoring and tries to wear you out. Poor quality lenses: So a few weeks ago I got two pairs of glasses through one of VSP providers. I added 30$ per pair, to improve the lenses to a superior type. Both pairs are unusable - there is a very bad reflection issue with the glasses, every light in the room or the street is reflected on the lenses. Crossing the street at night using those glasses is a just a visual show of a million lights reflecting from... Read More

Nothing more than a "discount card". You are better off saving your monthly payment towards your new glasses and then going anywhere you want to buy them as their "allowances" are so low that unless you want to get a pair of garbage glasses you will have to pay extra on top of your monthly premiums. At the end of the day, your premiums plus the pitiful allowance amount, you end up with a very expensive pair of low quality glasses.

I'm very disappointed in VSP. I recently had cataract surgery and no longer need eye glass insurance, however, VSP will not cancel my insurance until next enrollment period - 10 months from now. Therefore, I have to continue paying $15 per month for nothing. The VSP agents told me that Cal PERS is the agency to speak with and Cal PERS tells me that it's VSP. I can't believe that VSP has a policy that can't be canceled when one's life has changed. I asked VSP if I die, does my beneficiary has to continue to pay until the open enrollment period and VSP says no. Well I don't see any difference except that it is a poor policy. I will never recommend VSP.
