Supersmile is a brand of teeth whitening products originally developed by Irwin Smigel, DDS in 1985. The Supersmile line includes toothpaste, pre-rinse, whitening accelerators, activating rods, and other oral care products. These can be purchased through the Supersmile website or at retail locations.

INGREDIENTS

Supersmile products are generally based on a blend of calcium peroxide and other minerals that dissolve the film that plaque and stains stick to and discolor people's teeth. These ingredients are delivered through a number of different products, including toothpaste, rinses, floss, and on-the-go/ travel-ready/portable products. The company claims that these products can be used daily without harm to tooth enamel. Unlike some competing products, Supersmile's line of teeth whiteners does not include silica, a substance that can damage the teeth.

EFFECTIVENESS

Supersmile provides summaries of several independent studies that compare its products against those offered by its competitors. These studies look at protein pellicle removal (i.e., how thoroughly each brand removes the proteins to which stains adhere on the teeth), plaque inhibition, degree of whitening, and abrasiveness. These summaries suggest that Supersmile is effective at whitening teeth and that it's less abrasive and more effective than some of its major competitors. It's unclear whether these studies were conducted double-blind and whether they included brands that out-performed Supersmile. Supersmile does not publish the actual study reports.

EASE OF USE

One of the advantages of Supersmile is that it offers a number of different tooth whitening products that can be used at different times and in different situations. These include activating rods (which are used before brushing), toothpaste (which the company advises should be used without water), a whitening accelerator (which is used in conjunction with the toothpaste), pre-rinse, mouthwash, gum, a powdered whitening rinse (convenient for travelers), and a "Quikee" compound that will remove tooth stains without water. This variety of products ensures that people who are serious about oral care and whitening their teeth will be able to do so no matter where they are.

PRICE

Supersmile products are among the more expensive teeth whitening products we've reviewed. However, the products may last longer as only a small amount is required with each use. To some extent, the price can be controlled by deciding which of the various Supersmile products you are most likely to use frequently. The company also offers product combination packages and a subscription model which cost less on a per-unit basis than buying products individually.

The company's "silver" subscription plan costs $81 every three months and can be customized with up to five different items. The "gold" plan costs $90 every three months and allows six items, while the "platinum" plan costs $99 every three months and allows seven items. Subscription plan payments can be made on an installment basis.
