Overall Rating: 4 / 5 (Excellent)

Stone Street Capital is one of the most prominent purchasers of structured settlements in the United States. The firm has purchased over $2.6 billion in structured settlements, annuities, and lottery payments. It offers flexible purchase options for portions or the whole of structured payments. The company is easily contacted via phone, chat, and email, though some consumers have complained that once contact is made, the firm's follow-up marketing efforts are relentless. The firm's reputation and commitment to transparency are questionable, however, in part because of a major lawsuit against it that was settled under a confidentiality agreement. When dealing with this or any structured settlement purchaser, consumers are strongly advised to retain independent legal counsel to make sure their interests are being protected.

Stone Street Capital Services

Services - 4.5 / 5

In addition to buying structured settlements, Stone Street purchases lottery winnings and annuities. In situations where there is a delay between court approval of the structured settlement sale and the issuance of the lump sum check, the company may issue advances.

One of the services Stone Street Capital provides is assistance at the court hearing where a judge will be asked to approve the sale of your structured settlement. The firm's website says, "Always ask who will be helping you in court when you need to go. Stone Street Capital will be with you to help guide you through the process." This is seriously misleading, as it suggests that the company will act as your representative or your attorney when the matter of the proposed sale of your structured settlement comes before the court. This is not the case. Stone Street's lawyers and employees represent Stone Street, not you. They are under no legal obligation to advise you to take steps that are in your best interest.

Litigation and Regulatory Actions

In 2015, Stone Street Capital was sued by an elderly Florida woman who alleged that the company forged her signature to effect the sale of her rights to lottery winnings totaling $2.8 million. The case was settled under a confidentiality agreement which prohibits either side from discussing how it was resolved. Of course allegations are not proof and a settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing. But the company's insistence on a confidentiality agreement casts doubt on the company's commitment to transparency. Further, in 2017, a paralegal for a New York City law firm that represented Stone Street Capital and other structured settlement purchasers, pleaded guilty to forging the signatures of New York judges on structured settlement sale approval orders. Stone Street subsequently sued the law firm for legal malpractice.
